Chapter 2: Family Reunions
"You should let me love you! Let me be the one to give you everything you want and need."
Our car journeys were full-on performances when Mom, Catori and I were in the car. We were belting out the lyrics to one of my favourite songs at the moment and not even Jesse's complaining was going stop us.
Bella had arrived home this afternoon and my mom thought it would be a great idea for us to all go and welcome her home to dreary old Forks. She collected us all from Dad's as it was a Sunday afternoon, and much to Jesse's protests at seeing Bella again, decided to drag him along with us.
They never really got on when we were younger. He just found her annoying, her clumsiness ruining their games and when he moved in with Dad after the divorce, he never really saw her even when she did visit.
I had mixed emotions about meeting Bella again today, unlike Jesse we got on when she came to visit, but she was just so quiet, a loner almost, but I guess she got that from Charlie.
"So, are you guys ready?" Mom asked as we pulled up outside Uncle Charlie's house. We were lucky today, it hadn't rained for the past two days, the ground was dry, and the light breeze was a huge contrast to the gale force winds that had hit us earlier in the week.
"I guess so." Jesse sighed, then smiled sassily at Mom. He did not want to be here.
He had his moments, like the one right now, but he really was kind-hearted. Give it a few weeks and maybe he'll warm up to Bella, they've both grown up since the last time they had seen each other.
"Please don't be rude Jesse. Promise me." She pointed her finger at him, raising an eyebrow in question as he hesitated an answer, Tori and I watching them from the back of the car.
Jesse and Mom's relationship was strained. He hardly ever saw her, and I knew it hurt her. She missed having him around, but I don't think he noticed. I think he chooses to ignore it so he doesn't have to feel guilty. The divorce wasn't messy, in fact Mom and Dad were like best friends and ultimately, I think that was the problem. The romantic love dissolved and was replaced with platonic love.
"Fine. Jesus, Mom." He said before unbuckling his seat belt to climb out of the car.
Mom let the hurt expression wash over her face before connecting back with reality and shaking it off. It irritated me he was so snappy with her; I held my tongue before I verbally abused him and caused a scene. I'd let him have it later though.
Before I even shut my door, Uncle Charlie was already outside the front door and walking down to the car to hug Mom. I liked their friendship, I guess them both being divorced helped them bond just that little bit more. Uncle Charlie was in fact the reason Mom met Dad. Mom and Aunt Renee were originally from California, they rarely got on with their own mom and didn't even have any kind of relationship with their dad.
When they moved out, they decided to travel along the coast and when they came up here, they saw Dad, Uncle Charlie, and Jacob's, Seth and Leah's, and Quil's fathers all playing football on First Beach. Mom used to say that herself and Aunt Renee instantly fell in love. Mom decided to stay straight away, an impulsive decision - it's where I get it from - whereas Aunt Renee wanted to continue travelling but promised to return.
"Wow you even got Jesse to come out, you've grown a hell of a lot kid!" Charlie said bringing him in for a quick hug.
"And you've gotten older. Are they more wrinkles?" Jesse joked as he was released from the hug. I smiled in relief at his temperament, he wasn't going to be an ass.
"Jesse!" Mom scolded but Charlie laughed it off.
"Come on Lily, you know we are only joking. We do it every time." Charlie said before turning to me. "Hi sweetheart." He smiled hugging me as well.
"Hi Uncle Charlie." I smiled warmly. He favoured me compared to my other siblings but neither of us would admit it. I think it was because I was around the same age as Bella, I filled the whole she had left.
We continued our greetings before Charlie shouted into the house for Bella to come down to see us. We waited for about two minutes in a mostly awkward silence before she timidly emerged from the front door.
She was obviously older and kind of resembled what I remembered her to look like, but she was as pale as anything, nothing like I expected after living in Phoenix. Her hair was dark like Uncle Charlie's but was dead straight unlike his curls and long past her shoulders. She had high, prominent cheek bones and full lips like me, both of which we had inherited from our mothers. Our only similarities.
She walked down the steps hiding her face behind the wisps of her hair and fiddling with the sleeves of her shirt. She looked awkward. I guess that's what moving back home does to you after so many years away.
Bella's POV
I had been watching them from my bedroom window before Charlie called me down. They all looked so different compared to when I had last seen them.
Jesse was taller than Charlie, his long black hair fell past his shoulders as they laughed together, he was a younger version of Uncle Robert. He looked strong but still had that boyish charm around him only being eighteen. It's hard to believe he was related to me, everything about us being completely different.
Aria was beautiful, no doubt about that. She had the perfect tanned skin like her brother, maybe only a shade lighter, and long flowing dark brown hair that reached her ribs. Out of the three Hotah children she looked the least Quileute. Her bright blue eyes like her mother's made her stand out amongst the three. There were barely any similarities between us, but I found comfort in seeing she had the same blue eyes as Mom.
And Catori, despite being the youngest she looked just as old as Aria. Completely beautiful. She also had the tanned skin and the deep, almost black, Quileute eyes. Her hair however was like her sister's: brown. Maybe even a golden brown if the sun shone on it, but that is a big maybe, we are in Forks. I don't even remember seeing the sun in all the times I stayed here before.
After staring for some time, I knew I would have to go down there eventually. I admit I was nervous; I haven't seen these people in three years. They all looked like strangers to me, all of them except for Aunt Lily, she just looked older.
I walked out of the already open front door, pulling on my sleeves as I descended the porch steps towards my stranger family members. Trying not to trip over my own feet, the cool breeze hit me making me shiver. I should've grabbed my coat.
"Bells, you remember your Aunt Lily and your cousins, right?" Charlie smiled as Aunt Lily sprung over and pulled me in for a hug which I returned.
As if I'd forget family members.
She was like Mom, they looked the same, they smelt the same, they even had the same temperament which made me accept the hug more gladly.
"Haven't you grown. Wow. You're so beautiful." She sounded like Mom as well. Urgh, I want to go home.
I felt my cheeks heat up, I hardly ever got comments like that. "Thank you." I gave her a small smile, continuing to pull on my sleeves as I looked down at the floor.
"Come on kids come say hi." Lily beamed ushering them over. I guess they sensed the awkwardness too.
"Hey." Jesse said first, offering his hand out for a handshake which I accepted.
"Hi." I smiled which he returned.
Well, that wasn't awkward at all. He never used to like me.
"Well, I'm not gonna make you shake my hand. Hi Bella." Aria said hugging me, I was surprised at first, but I returned it all the same.
We had never been alike, not ever. Of course, we had been friends and played together all the time as children but since I left, we never stayed in touch. I guess I would have one friend here in Forks.
"It's nice to see you again Aria." I smiled, and she returned it. Our moms thought it would be a good idea to both give us Italian names as they both craved Italian food in their pregnancies, they even gave us the same middle name that was our grandmother's name.
"We are gonna be in the same grade at school, not sure about classes but you'll definitely see me around. You won't see Jesse though, he's a senior on the Reservation but Tori you'll see around too. She's a freshman at Forks High School." I nodded absorbing the information.
"Well at least I'll know somebody." I admitted before glancing to my right to see Charlie and Lily talking a few feet away. I guess that they got on well based on the fact how comfortable Charlie was with my cousins and Aunt.
"Hey Bella." Catori smiled at me hugging me as well.
"Hi Catori."
"Please call me Tori I can't stand my full name." She said waving me off and I nodded. I thought it was quite pretty.
"Tori it is then." I smiled lifting only one corner of my mouth. I could understand her wishes for a nickname, I had to correct people all the time.
"Why don't we go inside?" Charlie offered, and my cousins nodded in agreement as he led the way into the house.
We spent the rest of the evening catching up. Jesse tried to remain interested, but you could tell he was bored out of his mind.
I felt like I was being interrogated but it would've been rude if I didn't ask any questions back. "So, anyone in a relationship?" I don't know why that was the first question to pop into my head, I felt completely embarrassed as their eyes widened.
Each of my cousins answered with a "no" which kind of dead ended that conversation topic before Jesse piped up turning to Aria.
"What about that Ryan kid?" He was smirking at her and she sent a deadly scowl back his way. I hope I hadn't opened a can of worms.
"He's just a friend. It was a friendly date." She stated trying to be as serious as possible.
"Sure thing. Most romantic restaurant in town is just for friends." He was teasing her now.
"Shut up Jesse, it's the only restaurant in town." She hissed, her jaw clenched, and the room fell into silence.
"Is that Ryan Morris?" Charlie broke the silence. "He's a nice kid. I work with his father."
"Yeah he mentioned that he's seen you." Aria said quietly. Her cheeks flushed red, her eyes darting to the floor probably wanting the topic of conversation to change.
Aunt Lily looked nervously at her two eldest children, their agitation becoming the elephant in the room. "Jesse we better get you back to your dad's."
"Yeah I've got an assignment due in tomorrow I haven't even started yet." He said it like it was nothing and Aunt Lily looked appalled.
"Jesse!"
"Chill Mother. It'll get done." He rolled his eyes and I watched as Aria glared at him.
"Well I'll see you at school Bells." Catori said standing, the rest of the family following in suit leading me to do the same.
She hugged me tightly before following Jesse out the door as he called goodbye. Aunt Lily said goodbye too, holding me for a little longer than I initially expected, I think she missed my mom. She was here all alone after all.
"If you need anything at school tomorrow call me." Aria instructed as she hugged me, we had exchanged numbers earlier. "Everyone's super friendly, you'll be fine."
"Thank you, Aria." I really did mean it. I was so thankful to have a friendly face in this dreary town. It made going to a new school a little more bearable.
Charlie and I waved our goodbyes at the door, remaining until their car pulled away and then the awkward silence between us settled back into place. "I guess I'll start dinner then."
He nodded briefly before heading back to the lounge. God, I hoped I hadn't made the wrong choice moving here.
