Heart
As soon as the hospital doors opened and the paramedics rushed her into the operating room she new this wasn't going to end up like a normal day. Everyday was filled with heart brakes and death but today was about to get a thousand times harder for Dr. Handson to comprehend.
I walked down the hall towards the operating room as a nurse beside me was filling me in on the details. Talking quickly and not having the right mind to listen to her I sped up in the hall inching closer to where the girl was. "Doctor we don't know if she will make-" The nurse began before I cut her off. "I have seen and taken care of that poor girl ever sense she was in diapers! I'll be damned if I let another member of the McCarthies die." I said, turning back to the operating room.
I approached the door and looked inside seeing the surgeons work on her. There was blood everywhere as the surgeons were carefully extracting small bits of metal from her chest. I entered the room and took a look at her file; which was hanging over a chair to the left of the room.
"Dr. Handson we can't have you in here at this time. Please we will do everything we can." One of the surgeons said. I grabbed the clip board and headed out of the room. Every step I took seemed to become more and more quiet as I read the words printed onto her file. Age: 15, Name: Hannah McCarthie, Condition: Critical, Diagnosis: Shrapnel punctured into left side of the upper body. Possibly damaging her heart. "Please god..." I though, "Please god don't add her to the list." Another nurse came up to me and startled me as I read the file. "Doctor there's something else you should know about her condition." She began.

"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Hannah! Happy birthday to you!" The crowd around Hannah roared as she blew out the candles on her birthday cake. Today was Hannah's 15th birthday. And as it may be a day where a young girl starts to become a woman, today was the begging of a possibly short life that she will have to live.
With her was her foster mother and father, her boyfriend, and a few friends. All excited to celebrate such a happy day. Recently things have been tough for Hannah. From getting teased at school for how she looked or dressed or how her parents weren't her birth parents. She was constantly put down for the most idiotic things.
Though there was one person that really was there for her 100% of the time. That was her boyfriend, Alexander Shaw. They had been together for sometime now and were very happy together. And with this relationship things started to seem to go her way. That was only for one night sadly. For only hours later her life will change forever.
After everyone had stopped singing that totally annoying, yet strangely comforting song. I blew out the candles. Everyone cheered and Alex leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. "Happy birthday Princess!" He said smiling at me.
Tonight finally felt like a night I can remember. Nobody to put me down and only people I truly love around me. My mother and father, my best friends in the world, and Alex. After we all ate cake dad paid the bill for everyone and slowly one by one everyone had left the diner we were in. My favorite place off the highway that somehow; despite the small place, was incredibly good.
"We're so glad you're having a great birthday sweety." Dad said, "Now that we are done here what do you say we head home? Huh?" I gave my mom and dad a hug and walked out holding hands with Alex. We approached the car and got in, ready to end a perfect day and venture into the next day that will bring greater opportunities!
The drive out here can be pretty long sometimes. Ranging from around 1 to 2 hours depending on traffic. So Alex had his head phones in passed out as usual and mom and dad were trying to make small talk.
"How are you doing at school sweet heart?" Mom asked. "I'm fine I guess." I replied. They kept asking me questions about school and friends and things I normally never wanted to talk about with anyone. These past couple days have really helped me be happier but at the end of the road there's still those jerks at school making fun of every little thing about me.
Sometimes I don't understand why they pick on me. The teared up feeling I get inside when they make fun of my relationship. Saying Alex only wants one thing. Or how many friends I have and that I hang out wth geeks. Or making fun of my hair or how I dress.
Without even noticing it I started to get tense thinking about everything. I realized when Alex put his hand on my shoulder. "You ok Han?" He asked.
I laid my head onto his shoulder and closed my eyes. "Everything seems like it's going to get better." I said. Mom looked back at me and smiled and I could see dad smiling in the car mirror. "I love you gu-" was why I began to say before the front bumper made a loud cranking noise and the sound of car alarms started to fill my ears. Everyone in the car began to scream as the car began to slide to the side of the road, hit the railings, and began to fall with us all inside.
15 hours later
I looked into her hospital room. She seemed so delicate and small. Completely venerable to the world around her. Now I, had to be the one to make the world come crashing down on her. I had to be the one to tell her what has happened and what she needs to be done to survive. And how it isn't just her life at stake.
Her eyes began to shutter as she let out a low pitched howl in pain. I entered the room and went by her side to comfort her. "Hannah it's me dear, it's Doctor Handson. Sweety do you remember anything?" I asked slowly. She only looked up at me and began to mumble words. "Alex... Car... Cliff... Light..." she said over and over until she began to understand where she was.
"Honey do you remember anything at all?" I asked her. "No... " She said. "Hannah there was an accident." I said, trying not to get choked up. "You were in the car with your mother, father, and boyfriend Alex. Sweety a semi-truck crashed into the front of your car sending you 50 feet down the mountain." She seemed so confused, probably wondering where her family was.
"Where's my parents? Where's Alex!" She yelled. She tried to move but she let out a loud yelp and looked down at her chest. "What happened to me?" She asked. "Hannah you need to understand... you are lucky to be alive... your family they... weren't so lucky."
Tears began to fill in her eyes as she processed what that meant. "No... Mom...Dad...Alex..." she said sobbing under her breath. "There's something else Hannah. That will make things so much worse. And I am sorry that this is happening to you but you need to know what's going on in your body." She looked up at me. "What's wrong with me." She asked. "Hannah... shrapnel from the crash is inside of your chest. We couldn't get it all out sense some small parts were close to your heart. Your only chance would be to have a heart transplant here in the hospital."
Her eyes widened after I was finished. "What... what's the waiting time?" She asked. "We have a heart Hannah, but there are several other people who need the heart as much as you do. There's s list.
"As much as I do? Did they loose their entire family! Do they have metal in their chest?" Hannah yelled. Her entire world was falling apart and it was only about to get worse. "Hannah there's something else..." I said. She looked up at me stunned and waited for a response. "Hannah... Hannah you're pregnant."
