Dust Above Gold
Dust Above Gold
Most people have a tendency to judge others by their looks. Because of this they might even bully others about their skin tone, irregular teeth, weight etc.
Thankfully I have never been seriously bullied because of my looks or outer appearance. But there were a few times when some people, intentionally or unintentionally did judge me.
A few years ago, a bunch of my classmates were talking about Football and one boy asked me whether I was a support of Brazil. I was caught off guard with the sudden question but answered him truthfully that I was indeed a fan of Brazil. When I asked him the reason behind the question , he just laughed and said , " I guessed so as you have a dark skin tone like them."
Now the funny thing is that he also had the same skin tone as me . We were really young at that time so I don't think he meant it in an offensive way, but who knows ...
Because, it did hurt a bit and I was left wondering , what is wrong with having a dark skin tone?
I was also made fun of various times as I have rather large and uneven teeth. Some people nicknamed me 'rabbit.'
At first I didn't mind much as I thought they were saying it in a joking way , but when they repeated it again and again it started to hurt . At times I would try to cover my mouth with my hands while laughing so that my teeth didn't show.
There are many more small incidents like this which might not seem like such a big problem but whenever these memories cross my mind, I question myself and it leaves a slight hollow sadness inside me.
Now I wonder how much pain people who actually get seriously bullied because of their looks go through. All the time they spend crying over their appearance, judging themselves every time they look at their reflection in a mirror, all because of a small comment made by some shallow, rude person which had scarred them deeply.
A bully can easily tell someone " You don't deserve to exist with the face you have . Aren't you ashamed by it ?"
But do they know how gravely it would impact that person?
No. I'm saying this because of a recent experience. No one deserves to be told this . Even in a joking manner, it's completely unacceptable!
I have seen some of my friends mocked just because they are a bit overweight or have a large forehead.
I'm not exactly skinny but neither am I fat. I'm just okay ...
But still I have been told by some people to lose weight , exercise, or not to eat much in case I become obese.
I have been suggested to apply various face washes or creams so that my caramel skin tone gets more lighter.
Now the question is why should I do these?
Our creater has himself moulded each human being with their own unique beauty. None of us chose our outer appearance, it was given to us and we should appreciate all these blessings.
When you think you are not beautiful enough or something , think about all the people who don't even have the blessings which you do have!
" All of the stress and pressure
All in pursuit of perfection
Wish you knew that imperfections
Make you an exception.
Don't change , every part of you is just right
Don't change , not a single curve or one line."
These lyrics are from the song ' Don't Change - Why Don't We'
These are so amazing and have helped me so much!
But humans will never be content , they will always strive to be better. The bitter truth is that the judgemental society we live in will always continue to judge us.
If we are thin , we are told to eat more.
If we are fat , we are told to loose weight.
People with fair skin wants to get tanned while the ones with dark skin tones scrub various products to make themselves a bit more fair.
But why? What's the point of all these?
When we are in a dark room, does it matter if our skin color is dark or fair? No, we are all the same.
Do people with fair skin have different colored blood than dark skinned people?
No, we all have the same red blood pumping through our veins.
Just because someone is pretty on the outside doesn't make them better than others.
As we grow older , our outer appearance will change but the person inside will not .We will loose all these so called 'beauty' we once had and were so proud of. So what truly matters is if we have a good , true ,loving soul or not. Because true beauty is found within our souls. Our actions define who we are so we should judge someone by their actions and not their looks.
In the end we will remember not the most beautiful face, but the most beautiful soul.
I don't care if someone is black, brown or white, tall or short, fat or thin, rich or poor or which country they are from. If they show me respect and kindness, they will receive the same treatment from me.
Beauty goes deeper than the surface. Our looks by which we get judged is like dust above gold, covering the beautiful soul we have inside.
