"You're the big sister!"

"Why don't you want your brother to go with you?" Theresa Chigozie asked Eliza.

"It's not a kids party" Eliza stated.

"I hope alcohol is prohibited"

"Of course"

"Still, John is going with you"

"But mom.....!"

"No buts!"

"It's not fair! He'll distract me from having fun. I'll have to keep an eye on him constantly"

"Of course! You're the big sister!"

"Why can't he stay over at Mrs Okoro's place? She's a nice old lady"

"That's not happening! my word is final! Now go and dress up, before I change my mind".

Eliza turned to go but stopped, turning back "Wait, are you driving us there?"

"Yeah, I have to, so I can find out if there will be adult supervision"

Eliza remembered the old heap that was still parked in their front yard and she grimaced.
"Has that car been repaired?"

"Yeah, finally" Her mom smiled. "I'll be driving it to work and I'll also take you guys to school from now on"

Eliza gaped at her mom in horror.

Don't bother mom. We're better off without it. Have you seen the latest cars my friends' folks drive? She thought but didn't voice it out

"Um, mom. Don't worry about it. Aunt Agnes will be coming to pick us up"

Theresa's expression changed upon hearing her sister's name.
"What! What did you just say?"

"Aunt Agnes is coming to.......,"

"I don't understand" She cut in, shaking her head. "Have you been talking to her?"

"Uh, yeah. She's my aunt"

"How many times have I told you to stop talking to her! Nwa! Elee mgbe i ga-anu nti!( when will you ever listen to me?!)"

Eliza knew that this argument has taken a drastic turn for the worst when she noticed her mom reverting back to Igbo. They rarely used Igbo at home. She knew she was way beyond furious with her for going against her word. But she refused to back down.
"Why shouldn't I! I don't care if your relationship with her is strained! I just want to go to the party!"

"I........" She was speechless.

Suddenly, a loud honk was heard outside. There was silence in the room. Then John's feet was heard coming.

"Mom, I don't want to go with her. I don't like her friends" He whined.

"You have no choice. I have to go to work" She told him and turned to Eliza "We'll continue this later".

The Igbo language is a huge problem for me because it doesn't have punctuation marks. But I didn't allow it to deter me.

So guys, what are your views about Eliza and her mom?
