Chapter Seven

Grace had just gotten home when she got a message from Fury asking to meet him at Randy's Donuts. She made it to the door and was joined by Natasha in a black suit. "What are you doing here?" Grace asked her.

"Fury's meeting with Tony"

"Holy shit"

They entered together and approached the table where Fury and Tony were seated. "We've secured the perimeter, but I don't think we should hold it for too much longer", Natasha informed. Tony put his sunglasses on his nose. "Huh!" he said. "You're both...fired. Is this why you didn't want to be CEO?" "Not the time, Tony", Grace said, as she and Natasha sat down. "Tony, I want you to meet Agents Romanoff and Papanov". "Papanov?" Tony asked. "I'm not an agent again", Grace argued. "Yet", Fury added. "I'm a SHIELD shadow", Natasha explained, ignoring them. "Once we knew you were ill, I was tasked to you by Director Fury". "I suggest you both apologise", Tony said. "You've been very busy", Nick continued. "You tried to make Papanov CEO, you're giving away all your stuff. You let your friend fly away with your suit. Now, if I didn't know better...".

"You don't know better. I didn't give it to him. He took it"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. He took it? You're Iron Man and he just took it? The little brother walked in there, kicked your ass and took your suit? Is that possible?"

"Well, according to Mr Stark's database security guidelines, there are redundancies to prevent unauthorised usage", Natalie answered. "What do you want from me?" Tony asked. "What do we want from you? Uh-uh", Nick replied. "What do you want from me?" Natasha got up and left but Grace stayed. "You have become a problem, a problem I have to deal with", Nick continued. "Contrary to your belief, you are not the centre of my universe. I have bigger problems than you in the southwest region to deal with. Hit him". Natasha came up behind him and shocked him with something. "Take it easy", Grace whispered to her. "Oh, God, are you gonna steal my kidney and sell it?" Tony groaned. "Could you please not do anything awful for five seconds?" The scarring on his neck suddenly disappeared. "What did she just do to me?" he asked. "What did we just do for you?" Nick asked. "That's lithium dioxide. It's gonna take the edge off. We're trying to get you back to work".

"Give me a couple boxes of that. I'll be right as rain"

"It's not a cure, it just abates the symptoms", Natasha replied. "Doesn't look like it's gonna be an easy fix", Nick added. "Trust me, I know. I'm good at this stuff", Tony said. "I've been looking for a suitable replacement for palladium. I've tried every combination, every permutation of every known element".

"Well, I'm here to tell you, you haven't tried them all"

Once the meeting was over, Grace took Tony back to his house. He was silent for a few moments and she patiently waited for his outburst. "What the hell, Grace?!" he exclaimed.

"I know"

"Seriously!"

"I know!"

"Papanov. Your name is Grace Papanov"

"Not anymore"

"You need to tell me everything!"

"I will. I was raised in the Red Room to be an assassin. Trained to kill...and I did. A lot. Things I am in no way proud of. Natasha got on SHIELD's radar in a bad way and Agent Barton was called to take her out. He made a different call and she made them bring me with her to be an agent of SHIELD. I didn't want to be. I wanted to be a different person. I wanted to forget. I didn't want to be Grace Papanov anymore. I tracked down my mother who I hadn't seen since before the Red Room and she helped me change my identity and escape. I became Grace Potter. But I couldn't escape the memories. Drink tied me over for a while...until it didn't. I tried to kill myself so I had to move back in with her and then I got a job for you. And it was the best thing that ever happened to me. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. You saved my life and you don't even know it"

"That's everything?"

"That's everything, I promise"

"Alright, you can leave now"

"What, Tony?"

"Grace, you lied to me"

"I had no choice!"

"Don't pull that crap with me. You had a choice and you chose to lie. You know...never mind"

"No, what? Say it. Go on, say it, see if you can hurt me enough"

"Maybe Adam was right about you being a liar"

"Wow. Thank you, Tony, for making me realise you're never gonna change. Bye"

She left through the front door and slammed it. She laid against it, breathing heavily. She turned around slowly, reaching for the handle but she pulled her hand away. Suddenly, the door opened and Tony was standing there. They looked at each other for a few moments before Tony pulled her inside and kissed her. He kicked the door closed with his foot, still kissing her.
