Chapter Nine - Oh Ms Believer
While Macy and Luke talked, Jacob returned to the living area.
"Is everything okay?" Liam asked, wincing slightly as Bailey finished redressing his wound.
Jacob nodded. "Some stuff from Macy's past came up, but Luke is with her. She'll be okay."
"Did it have to do with the conversation we had earlier?" Darien asked.
"No, it didn't. Well, maybe a little bit, but that wasn't the main trigger for her," Jacob replied. "I told Luke we shouldn't leave tonight though, so we have an evening to kill."
"We could play a game!" Bailey suggested. "What about Twister?"
"That's perfect! The four of you can play and I can be the spinner!" Liam added.
"I haven't played Twister in over a decade. Might be too tall for it now," Darien teased.
"Are you kidding me?" Bailey said. "Your height gives you an advantage. You're definitely gonna beat us all."
Darien chuckled softly, leaning his head down, rubbing the aching muscles in his neck. He looked at Bailey, held eye contact for a few seconds then looked away. Bailey's cheeks flushed lightly. She walked to the closet and grabbed the game.
"Here ya go," she said, handing Liam the spinner while Jackson laid out the mat.
"This is going to be interesting, seeing as we're all fully grown," Jacob laughed.
Jacob and Bailey stood on one end of the mat, while Darien and Jackson stood on the other. Liam flicked the spinner and called out the colors. Things went pretty well until Darien's back seized, causing him to collapse. Jacob, who had his balancing arm under Darien's leg, fell forward and in the process knocked over Jackson. Jackson was woven around and above Bailey, so when he fell, Bailey toppled face first onto Darien's chest.
Darien groaned in pain. "Sorry guys."
Liam laughed while Jackson helped move Darien's leg off Jacob's arm. Bailey pushed herself up, studying Darien's pained expression.
"What happened, Darien?" she asked, still hovering over him.
"My back spasmed, thanks to withdrawals," he said, opening his eyes.
Bailey carefully touched his side. "Let's get you up to the couch. Liam, you're moving to the recliner."
Liam hopped on his good leg over to the chair, propping his bad foot up with the footrest. Darien made an attempt to sit up, but his arms collapsed under him.
"Jacob, grab his shoulders. Jackson, grab his legs," Bailey ordered. "I'll support his torso so his back doesn't move too much. On three."
The three lifted him and quickly shifted him to the couch. Bailey propped him up with some pillows then covered him with a blanket after noticing he was shivering. The boys wandered into the kitchen, grabbing a snack. Bailey sat beside Darien and brushed his hair off his forehead.
"I'm gonna heat up a rice sock for you," she said softly, feeling his head for a fever. "Do you want a Gatorade?"
"You really don't need to," Darien said.
Bailey gave him a half smile. "But I'm going to."
Darien bit his lip, looking at her. "Thank you."
Bailey walked over to the kitchen, putting a rice sock into the microwave. She grabbed a Gatorade from the fridge and walked back over to Darien. He moved to grab the drink from her, but his back spasmed again.
"Here, let me," Bailey said, unscrewing the cap and bringing it to his lips.
The microwave beeped and Bailey ran over to grab the rice sock. She came back and sat next to Darien again.
"Okay, I'm gonna lift you up a little bit so I can put this on your back. It'll help relax your muscles. I think I have a pain balm somewhere around here, but we can put that once you've rested a bit."
Darien winced as Bailey carefully slid the sock under his back. As the heat radiated into his muscles, he was able to relax a bit more.
"Thank you," he said with a full smile. "It's already feeling much better."
"You should smile more. Your dimples are adorable," Bailey grinned.
"Ahem," Liam cleared his throat.
"Yes?" Bailey asked, turning to him.
"I'm feeling very neglected. I thought I was your favorite invalid," he teased.
"I don't know, Liam. He has dimples. Dimples are hard to resist."
Darien blushed and turned his head toward the couch cushions to hide.
"I'm hurt," Liam added.
"Oh hush, not everything is about you," Bailey said.
"I don't know how I'll live," he replied with a wink.
Jackson walked over to his brother. "You gonna be able to come with us to Portland?" he asked.
"I'll have to. They need my help finding the place."
Bailey frowned. "I don't know if that's a good idea. You can barely move without spasming."
"But he's the whole reason we're going. It doesn't make sense to go without him," Jacob explained.
"Let's see how I feel once the pain balm is on. It should help, right?" he said, looking to Bailey.
"I mean, I guess. I still think you should stay here," she said.
Jacob and Jackson glanced at each other.
"I'm going to talk to Luke. He can make the final decision," Jacob said.
He walked down the hall and knocked on Macy's door.
"Come in!" Macy said.
He opened to door, revealing Luke and Macy sitting on her bed talking.
"What's up?" Luke asked.
"There's a situation."
"What do you mean?" Macy asked.
"Darien broke."
Luke raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean he broke?"
"Well, Bailey suggested we play a game, so we picked Twister, and things were fine for a bit, but then his back seized I guess and we had to lift him to the couch. Bailey's got some heat on his back and is gonna put some pain balm on later."
Luke rubbed his bearded chin. "Is he gonna be able to come with us tomorrow?"
"I think so. Bailey thinks he should stay here, but he seemed pretty determined to go."
"That's good, I guess. I should probably figure out where we're getting our car. I can go out in a little bit to look around," Luke said.
"What if we bought a beater for dirt cheap?" Macy suggested. "A car would be very useful."
"We can't, Macy. One, we have nowhere to store it, and two, it would be easy to track to us," Jacob answered.
Macy sighed. "I guess you're right."
Luke lifted Macy's face to his. "I don't want to steal either, but we don't really have any other options. There's a car lot not far from here, and I can ask the owner if we can rent a car for a few days. My grandmother babysat his kids a lot when they were growing up, so he might be more willing to help us."
"Can I come with you?" Macy asked.
"Of course," Luke smiled and looked down to her lips.
"Okay, I'm gonna give you two some space," Jacob said awkwardly. "I'll be out here if you need anything." He left the room and closed the door.
Macy laughed as she ran a hand through her short hair. Luke grinned, grabbing the back of her head, pulling her in for a kiss.
"Lucas Buchanan, we cannot overwhelm everyone with PDA," Macy said, putting a hand on his firm chest.
"But it's so fun!" Luke laughed, pulling her down next to him and assaulting her face with kisses.
"You're terrible," she giggled.
"But you love it," he grinned.
Macy sighed. "I suppose."
She rolled over to the edge of the bed and stood up.
"Where are you going?" Luke asked.
"I'm gonna go check on Darien."
She walked out to the main area, but Darien and Bailey were nowhere to be found. Liam, Jacob, and Jackson were playing Sorry on the coffee table.
"Glad to see you're feeling better," Macy said to Liam.
"Bailey is a magician. I swear. She does magic with those hands," Liam said.
Jackson and Jacob looked at each other and laughed.
"Oh, come on. You know that's not what I meant," he said, rolling his eyes.
"You walked right into that one, Liam," Macy laughed. "Where are Darien and Bailey?"
"Darien moved to our so Bailey could put the pain balm on his back," Jackson said.
"Oh, okay!" Macy said, walking back down the hall. She knocked on Darien's door. "Can I come in?"
Bailey opened the door. "Hey! I was just about to put on his pain balm! What's up?"
"I was coming to see how he was doing. Heard about your fall," Macy said.
Darien was shirtless, laying on his stomach so Bailey could do her work. "Drug withdrawals are no joke," he said.
Bailey kneeled over his back and started to apply a generous portion of balm. Darien winced at her gentle but firm hands.
"I'm glad I was forced to get clean after only about a year of doing drugs. I can't imagine how bad your withdrawals must be," Macy replied.
Bailey started to massage his muscles gently, rubbing in the balm.
"Dammit, that hurts," Darien said with a grimace.
Bailey kept going. "I know it hurts right now but it's helping to relax your muscles. You're pretty insistent on going to Portland, so I'm trying to help you heal as much as possible before you leave."
Darien sighed.
"Luke said he knows a car dealer in the area that might let us borrow a car," Macy told Darien. "We're going out later to talk to him. If he helps us, you will barely have to walk at all."
"Oh good," Bailey said.
Luke walked into the room. "What's the prognosis, doc?"
Bailey laughed. "His muscles spasmed due to his withdrawals. I've given him Gatorade and some medicine for the pain, and I'm massaging in some pain balm now."
"That's good. We need him bright-eyed and bushy-tailed tomorrow morning. I'm gonna call a dealership and see if there's a car we can borrow."
Bailey moved off of Darien's back. "Do you want to put your shirt back on?"
"I think I'll lay like this for a bit. Don't want to push my luck," Darien replied.
"Okay, I'm gonna go back out to the living room. Holler if you need anything," Bailey said, leading Macy and Luke to the door.
