9: Solid Ground And In The Clouds
I couldn't believe it.
A guard was already stationed by the door and there was no other way out. I didn't think they would be arriving to their stations so soon. Now, there I was, with a key that would be discovered missing, a guard who could potentially catch me, and with people who would be in and out to check on Peter Pan. I was going to get into so much trouble.
I looked around frantically for some escape route that maybe I didn't notice before. A chimney, vent, secret passage, something!
I felt a bead of sweat trickle down my face and wiped it away, running my hands over the objects on the table and shelves. Was there anything that could help me?
I heard the disney music beginning to play through the speakers outside, indicating that the gates would be opening soon. I groaned out loud, my voice being drowned out by Peter's as he began coughing again. The confinement was making me feel cramped. I took deep breaths to calm myself as I looked around me. The lightbulb flickered slightly and my breath hitched as it flicked off for a moment. Once it was back on, I exhaled. That was when I realized that the switch was right behind me and I was leaning on it.
Classic.
A small, unusual sack on a shelf caught my attention. It had a small note attached to it. I moved forward to pick it up. It felt like sand was inside. I turned the note over to read it.
Under observation for possible use as weapon against boy.
I opened the tiny sack and peeked inside. They thought glitter could have made those wounds? I scoffed at the thought before reaching into the sack and dipping my finger into the glitter. I grabbed a little handful and pulled it out to examine. It was a shimmering gold. It must have arrived with Peter.
Voices outside the door caused me to panic and I pressed myself against the shelf, my body tensing. No one seemed to be trying to get in. It must have been the voices of the visitors who had come to spend their day at ComplexDisney.
Just as I began to move away from the shelf, gold dust suddenly entered my vision. I blinked as some landed on my eyelashes. All I could see was a stream of glitter falling around me. Shoot. I spilled the sack when I bumped the shelf!
I boltrd away from the shelf and tried to wipe the glitter off of me. The rest of the glitter rested on the floor, shimmering in the dim light. I blew a few shimmering bits off of my lips before closing my eyes to wipe some glitter off of the back of my eyelids. As I tried to wipe it off, I suddenly felt myself tiptoeing, but against my will.
I snapped my eyes open and a shriek began to leave my lips. I clamped a hand over my mouth to keep from being heard as I flipped upside down and found myself pressing into the ceiling.
That glitter was pixie dust?!
I forced myself to take deep breath to calm myself. I used my feet to push off of the edge of the shelf. Just the small push sent me spiraling toward the door. I gasped and instinctively flailed out before my body made contact with the wall above the door. I winced and rubbed my shoulder.
How do I stop this?
Wait...this could help me get out. I used a small nail in the wall to grab so I could shift my body around. I gave the wall a gentle nudge, softer than the last one, and found myself sailing smoothly toward the ground since that was the direction I had my feet angled when I kicked off again.
I twisted my body upward and gave a small laugh as my angle moved so that I floated beneath the table instead of colliding with the floor. As I did a sharp turn in a backward somersault, I kicked off of the wall once again to gather some more speed. I stretched my arms out as if I was on a tight rope to help with the balance as I glided around the room.
It was weird not standing firmly on anything. Instead, I was in the air with no contact with anything solid. I yelped as I tried to stop myself from colliding with the door, but I didn't know how.
There was a small thump as I hit it and I quickly grabbed the nail in the wall to pull myself up. I pressed myself into the ceiling just as the door opened. The guard stepped inside and his dark eyes roamed over everything, landing on Peter Pan. "Dumb kid. What'd you do now?"
The guard approached Peter, probably to investigate and make sure he wasn't out of bed or something. Idiot. I took this advantage and pressed my palms into the ceiling to lower my body to level with the open door. As quietly as possible, I grabbed the open door and used it to boost myself outside.
My heart jolted in panic as my body slipped outside. I didn't think this through! There's nothing to anchor me out here!
I grabbed the border of the doorway and my arms wrenched in their sockets as I stopped my body from floating away into the sky. As quickly as I could, I began climbing up the roof of the small quarantine building with my hands. I grab onto anything that would anchor me and used that to make my way up the slanted rooftop.
It felt like I was walking on my hands, except with gravity still trying to tug me upward. I wished I had worked out at the gym more. My arms didn't hold much strength.
I hoped that everyone was too engrossed in what they were doing to notice me. The gates were open and the parks had been swarmed, so the chances of not being seen weren't in my favor. As I reached the top of the roof, I struggled to pull my body down. I couldn't. Dang it. Someone will eventually notice the body and legs floating upside down.
Sweat coated my forehead as I strained harder to pull myself down so I could anchor my feet underneath two loose boards in the roof. As I gave another small tug, the muscles in my arms straining, a gust of wind caused my aching fingers to slip off of the board I had been holding onto. I shrieked as my body flew upward, twisting and cartwheeling through the empty sky.
My heart seized momentarily before releasing. I breathed raggedly. I was terrified of heights! And as the clouds grew closer, my panic intensified. I glanced down, immediately regretting it. Dizziness overwhelmed my head as my body ungracefully soared farther and farther away from solid ground.
That was it. I was going to end up in space where I would then suffocate and die.
"Gianna."
What?
I glanced down. The voice sounded too close. Someone would have to be in the sky with me for me to hear them...
Zeke was gliding toward me. His body language was calm and composed, which differed from the worried expression on his face. I didn't have time to worry or wonder why and how he was there. I reached my hand out to grab him. His hand wrapped around my arm. My eyes found the rope around his waist before I was pressed against him and my only view was the ground below.
He had me in a tight grip, my head over his shoulder where I was forced to watch us descend as the rope grew taut from the strain of someone pulling on the other end. I gripped Zeke tightly, quivering slightly from the thought of what could have happened if no one rescued me.
"I've got you," he murmured into my ear, his tone soft. I didn't respond, feeling as if I couldn't breathe properly.
As the ground grew closer, I squinted to make out who was pulling us down behind the quarantine building. It was Ben. Ben, and the older woman from the water fountain. They were pulling us down with determined expressions on their faces.
Once our feet touched the ground, the woman grabbed a pail of water as Ben kept us in place and dumped it slowly over our heads. As the warm water rushed down my body, I felt my feet collapse firmly onto the ground. Something between a sigh of relief and a sob left me.
Ben released the rope and Zeke slipped it off of his waist. Ben turned to me. "You okay?"
I stared at the young, lanky man. He was a jerk earlier. Why is he here? Why is the woman from the fountain here? How did Zeke know I was floating away if he works in VillaVillain?
I rounded on Zeke, a scowl growing on my face. Despite my quivering tone, I managed to sound a little angry. "What the heck was that? You have a lot of explaining to do."
Zeke rubbed his elbow and sighed softly. "You do too, Gianna. We all do. So let's sit and talk, shall we?"

OOH. How did Zeke know she was floating away? Unless he just happened to notice her flailing body drifting up into the sky. xD
