As truth or dare commences, Jade continues to send me nasty looks, but I am effectively distracted by the warmth of Matt's thigh pressed against mine. He had casually stretched his arm over the couch behind me, and I didn't hesitate to shimmy a couple inches closer to him so I would be tucked in his side. Just to make it easier to make fun of everyone else during the game, I told myself.
When I'm this close to him, I can pick up slight traces of mint, pine, and the fresh scent of laundry detergent. Between his intoxicating smell, the silver rings on his fingers, the tattoos painted down his arm, and the cocky smirk that settles on his face every time he looks at me, I might as well be on a different planet, because I am barely paying any attention to the game.
I am vaguely aware of when one of Jade's friends makes a nasty mixed drink for Arrington, and I definitely notice when Sydney is dared to make out with Chris. Yuck. But it's only when my name is called that I truly snap to attention.
"Logan." Jade smirks at me. Maybe that's why she and Matt got along; they are both incapable of not smirking every five seconds.
"Jade." I raise my eyebrows at my ex-friend, not flinching away from her intrusive stare.
"Truth or dare?" she questions, the knowing glint in her eye suggesting she knows what I am going to choose.
Bring it on. "Dare," I state firmly.
Jade hums as if considering what to make me do, but the widening smirk on her face tells me I'm exactly where she wants me. "I dare you to tell everyone a secret." She leans forwards, delicately planting her elbows on her knees. "And it has to be one that I already know so we know you're not lying."
I roll my eyes, scoffing in disbelief. Due to the fact that Jade and I were friends in high school, she is aware of two of my best kept secrets: first, that my parents are dead, and second, that I have five siblings. I don't think she's aware that I gained custody, but she has what she needs to taunt me with every waking breath. Deep down, I know she would never tattle on me; she does have a heart somewhere in that chest. But that doesn't mean that she can't use the knowledge she possesses to piss me off.
"Seriously, Jade?" Sydney straightens up from where she was leaning against the guy beside her, levelling her best glare at Jade. Sydney may be princess-like most of the time, but she has a fierce mean streak and is unafraid to lash out at people who rub her the wrong way.
I gently put my hand on Syd's elbow to pull her back into the couch, but I never remove my gaze from Jade's. "When I was in high school, my boyfriend cheated on me with one of my closest friends." I smirk when Jade's expression falters. Matt's body tenses beside mine, but I keep my focus trained on Jade. "A rumour had already spread that I wasn't putting out and that's why he cheated, so I spread a rumour of my own. That I wasn't putting out because he had herpes, and when my friend slept with him, he gave them to her."
Jade's jaw tightens and she leans back into the couch, crossing her arms over her chest defensively, surprisingly staying silent.
Sydney sniggers beside me and gleefully flips Jade off. "She beat you, bitch."
Everyone else has fallen awkwardly quiet, the tension stewing between Jade, Sydney and I unmistakeable. I wink at Jade before letting my gaze roam around the circle. "Nick. Truth or dare?"
Nick scowls at me, obviously not anymore pleased to be playing this game than I am. "Truth."
I roll a few ideas around in my mind, not wanting to ask him anything too personal. Matt leans closer to me and his breath rustles my hair as he whispers into my ear. "Ask him if he thinks he overreacted when he lost his shit on me earlier."
I resist the urge to laugh at Matt's request and school my face into a neutral expression. "I would like to know if you think you overreacted when you lost your shit on Matt earlier."
Nick groans loudly, his eyes narrowing at his brother beside me. "You're full of shit."
"She asked you a question, kid," Matt grins smugly.
"That's a boring ass question!" One of Jade's friends whines. "This is supposed to be interesting."
"Nobody asked you, Patrice!" Sydney snaps, evidently reaching the state of drunkenness where she becomes convinced that she can take anyone.
The girl shrinks back at Syd's harsh tone, leaving Nick to answer my question.
"I may have overreacted," Nick grumbles under his breath while he inspects his nails.
"I fucking knew it," Matt mutters, settling back into his seat and pulling me another inch closer to him.
The game carries on, Nick using his turn on Chris, but I tune out my surroundings when I once again catch sight of Matt's hand splayed across his lap, rings decorating a couple of his fingers. "I like your rings," I mumble as I shift my arm so I can reach to delicately run my fingers over his knuckles.
"Yeah?" Matt's voice is low, his lips close to my ear.
"And your tattoos." Light as a feather, I trail my fingers up his arm, my eyes following the motion as I drink in the intricate designs.
"I like your tattoos, too." Matt gently flips my arm over, revealing the small dinosaur in the middle of my forearm. He traces his fingers over it, causing goosebumps to rise across my skin. "I've seen this one and the mountain one on the back of your arm, but do you have any others?"
I have my siblings' birth dates tattooed on the side of my ribs, but I won't be disclosing that information. However, I do have another one that I can tell him about. "I have one more." I lower my voice, ensuring my words only reach Matt's ears. "A flower bouquet. Right along my boob."
Matt's jaw ticks and I swear his eyes darken a shade. "Interesting."
I grin at him, pleased that I seem to be able to make him flustered.
"Matt," Larray calls, gaining both Matt and I's attention.
I instantly frown when I see the devious grin stretched across my friend's face. This is not going to be good.
"Truth or dare?" Larray questions, putting emphasis on the word 'dare.' Good Lord, he's milking it.
"Dare," Matt says confidently, his voice carrying across the room.
Larray's grin widens and his gaze darts to me for a half a second before settling back on Matt. "I dare you to pick anyone in this circle to go enjoy seven minutes in heaven with in that closet over there."
Matt's breath slows, and my own body stiffens at Larray's question. I am going to kill him tomorrow.
Matt raises his eyebrows at Larray as if to confirm that he's serious, and when Larray nods, Matt slowly stands, every eye in the room glued to him.
My mind is racing a million miles an hour. I know we've been casually flirting, but I'm supposed to be keeping my distance. I hope he picks someone else. No, I fucking don't. I know I shouldn't, but I desperately want to know what his lips would feel like against my own, how his rings would feel on my skin. If he picks someone else, I am going to be livid with jealousy. If he picks Jade, I might just pass away on the spot. And if he picks me...
Imitating his action from earlier, Matt extends his hand to me, a small smirk on his face as his eyes catch mine.
My own eyes widen slightly as I gaze up at Matt. Holy fucking shit, he picked me. I might pass out. I hesitate only a second before I grab Matt's hand and let him pull me to my feet and lead the way across the room to the closet Larray pointed out.
Hoots and hollers follow us, and I flip everyone off over my shoulder as Matt leads the way into the medium-sized closet that only has a few boxes stacked at the back. Darkness washes over as I pull the door shut behind us, leaving only the sound of our breaths.
I exhale slowly as I lean against the wall, Matt's hand still wrapped around my own. "I was worried you were going to pick Jade," I whisper, trusting my voice will carry through the dark to reach Matt's ears.
He chuckles, and I feel him step closer to me as his thumb rubs my hand. "That would have been a really stupid decision." He hesitates for a second, and I know what he's going to ask before he asks it. "She's the one your ex cheated with?"
"Yup," I answer shortly. I'm not hung up on Luke anymore, but that doesn't mean I particularly enjoy talking about the time I was stabbed in the back by my boyfriend and my friend.
"Shit." I can't see Matt's face, but I can hear the wince in his voice.
I shrug, forgetting he can't see me either. "I'm over it." I step closer to Matt, using his hand clutching mine as reference to find him, and twine my arms around his neck. "I've been over it for a while."
"Yeah?" The single word causes Matt's breath to brush against my lips. After I hum in agreement, Matt speaks again. "We don't actually have to make out if you don't want to."
"I do want to." I move even closer to him, pressing my body against his own. "Unless you don't want to?"
"Are you kidding?" Matt murmurs, his voice lower than I have ever heard it. "I can't get the thought of you out of my head. The thought of your lips on mine, the noises you would make if I kissed down your neck, the feel of your hands on my body."
Heat pools in my stomach at Matt's words, and I push myself even closer to him, grinning when his hands firmly grip my waist. "So kiss me then," I breathe against his lips.
As if worried he is going to scare me away, Matt bends his head to meet mine, his lips gently pressing against my own. A warm ache rushes through me, and despite his obvious hesitation, I desperately kiss him back, longing to ease the tension that has been building since I met him.
Taking my response as encouragement, Matt kisses me harder, and I gasp into his mouth when he abruptly pushes me back against the wall. His hands slide up my body to cup my face, his rings cold against my cheeks as he tilts my head to deepen the kiss.
My stomach is raging with butterflies and fire races through my veins, fueling me as I tangle my hands in Matt's hair, tugging on the soft strands. A low groan slips from his mouth, sending a shiver through my body. I tug on his hair harder and press my lips to his with an increased passion, the slide of his tongue against my own causing a tiny moan to escape my lungs.
"Fuck, Logan," Matt breathes as he pulls his lips from my own, immediately reattaching them to my neck.
"Matt," I whimper when he reaches a particularly sensitive spot near my collarbone, and I feel him smirk against my skin as his teeth graze the area. My hands drop from his hair to wrap around his shoulders, my nails scraping against the thin material of his t-shirt.
Once satisfied with the number of hickeys he has left behind, Matt kisses a trail back to my mouth. "Jump," he murmurs against my lips.
I obey immediately, Matt catching me and gripping my ass as I tighten my legs around his waist and lock my ankles at his back. I whine when he takes too long to return to my lips, and he chuckles. "Impatient, are we?"
"Still a cocky asshole, are we?" I retort, tugging on his chin to pull his face to mine. I feel him grin against my mouth and I take the opportunity to graze my teeth against his bottom lip, making his grin rapidly fall as he fights to regain dominance. I let him have it, sighing in bliss as his lips continue to move against mine.
Eventually, I unhook my ankles and slide down Matt's body. I keep my arms around his shoulders, tugging him down towards me so I can give him a few marks of my own. He groans when I attach my lips to his neck, planting one of his hands on the wall behind me to stabilise himself as his other hand grips my hip with enough force to leave bruises.
All too soon, Larray shouts at us from the other side of the door. "Time's up lovebirds!"
Matt presses one more lingering kiss to my lips before stepping away from me. My body instantly misses the pressure of his weight against my own, but I force a deep breath into my lungs to settle my racing heart and fluttering nerves. I run my hands through my hair and swipe my fingers around my lips to clear my smudged lip gloss, but there is nothing I can do about the various stinging marks of emerging hickeys on my neck and around my collarbone.
"Everybody is going to see the ridiculous number of marks on my neck," I mumble as I adjust my tank top.
"Good." I can hear the smirk in Matt's voice as he finds my hand in the dark. "Ready, Sunshine?"
"Ready," I confirm. I beat Matt to the door and push it open with my free hand, the harsh lights of the basement making me squint as my eyes adjust.
"Hey!" Sydney coos, winking at me knowingly. A few other comments and laughs occur, and I respond by flipping everyone off, since that is my natural response to most situations.
Matt surprises me when he tugs my hand to pull me toward the stairs, apparently not wanting to rejoin the game.
"Where are you going?" Chris calls after us, equally as curious as I am.
"Away," Matt answers shortly, not pausing his ascent.
I turn slightly to wave goodbye before hurrying up the stairs after Matt, my hand still tangled in his. "Where are we going?"
"Thought a breath of fresh air might do us good." Matt looks at me for confirmation, and when I nod, he directs us through the ever-present crowd on the main floor, heading for the back door to the backyard.
I don't realize how warm and stuffy the house is until we step onto the back patio, the heart pounding music growing significantly quieter as I slide the door shut behind us. The moon is shining brightly above, illuminating the clusters of people scattered around the patio and in the yard, most of who are smoking a joint.
Matt tugs me towards a cushioned patio chair and he sits down before tugging me into his lap, his hesitation from earlier completely gone.
"Hi," I grin at him as I settle on his thighs, my stomach continuing to perform a series of flips and turns.
"Hi," Matt grins back before kissing my nose. "You're kind of irresistible. Did you know that?"
"Am I?" I smirk, pressing a lighting-fast kiss to Matt's lips. "Funny you should say that, cause I haven't been able to get you out of my head since the moment we met."
A strangled sound escapes Matt's throat and his hand twines around the back of my neck, pulling me back down into another kiss. "You're doing wild things to me, Sunshine," Matt mumbles. When he slips his tongue into my mouth, all rational thoughts flee from my mind, and the only thing I can think about is my burning desire to kiss Matt with everything I have.
The thought that we are surrounded by people is irrelevant. My normal rules about not getting too close are irrelevant. Tomorrow is irrelevant. All that matters right now is Matt's lips against my own. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?
