- Chapter 89 -
We continued to walk in silence towards the camp. It was just over the next two hills in the forest until Robin came to a halt.
"We'll go no further unless I know I can trust you. I can't just betray the others and bring you to the camp." Robin informed him as I silently stood in between them, even though Guy ensured a distance of at least two meters remained between us. Not being able to be with him was punching a dagger through my heart as he still refused to acknowledge me or look in my direction.
"You can trust me. Just don't ask me to forgive your father." Guy responded with a slight pause. I noticed his voice grew a dark husky tone at the mention of Robin's father as he continued to look out at the forest in front of him. I saw that his comment angered Robin, which I wasn't sure if that was the aim he wanted.
"Now you listen to me, Gisborne. If we're going to work together, then we have to leave that behind." Robin spat at him as Guy looks over with disdain and a bit of surprise at Robin's authoritative tone.
'That's easy for you to say. Your father seduced my mother." He snapped back as I was once again becoming the divide between the two of them as they stood glaring at each other with their fists clenched.
"Well, it didn't take much effort, did it?!" Robin shouted back losing his temper as I stared at him. That was a low blow even for Robin as Guy was literally about to tackle Robin to the ground before I placed myself in the middle.
"That's enough the both of you! Robin, would you mind giving us a moment please?" I demand like a mother to children as I noticed Guy turned his back to me causing me to sigh. Robin breathed in deeply through his nose and narrowed his eyes at Guy's back before pulling me in close.
"Give me a shout if you need me." He whispered in my ear and did as I had asked and left. I waited for a brief moment before turning back to Guy who still hadn't turned to look back at me as I chewed my lip wondering how I would get through this.
"Do you really have nothing to say to me?" I spoke lightly hoping to tone down the seriousness of this conversation I knew would happen. I saw his back straighten and his muscles under his shirt tense as I wished I could do nothing more than let out those stressed muscles. Sharply he turned around and glared down at me.
"I have nothing to say to you. You've betrayed me Esme!" He snapped back roughly as I tried not to let his harsh anger get to me. I knew he would feel this way, it was only natural.
"You always were dramatic and here I was hoping for a simple 'I've missed you'" I questioned titling my head to the side slightly watching him as he narrowed his eyes at me.
"This isn't a joke! I thought I had killed you! I couldn't sleep or live with myself at night because I had destroyed the one good thing in my life. I destroyed you!" He shouted trying to get me to see it through his eyes as I saw his hands pause to reach out to me before he swiftly pulled back and took a few steps away but I merely followed, refusing for a larger gap between us than necessary.
"What would you have had me do? Tell you I was alive and remain undercover in the castle with the Prince and Sheriff watching your every move. If I had gotten hurt you would have acted irrationally -" I angrily demanded before he interrupted me.
"Exactly you could have gotten hurt!" He shouted as I sighed with a small smile on my lips knowing he still at least cared for my safety.
"But I'm fine!" I reassured him as I took another step closer towards him as he shook his head.
"You were in constant danger! Isabella was going to have you executed!" He threw back at me.
"Well you can thank Robin that we are both still alive." I argued back before I wished I could bite back on my words as I saw fury build in his eyes. I began to take a few steps back as he followed angrily towards me like prey.
"Hood? Has he known all this time?" He suddenly went quiet, which scared me even more as I felt my back press against a tree as he suddenly leaned over me. My eyes darted to his lips and I wanted nothing more than to reach up on my toes and kiss them.
"No" I squeaked as he narrowed his eyes at me.
"How long"
"Don't do this" I spoke softly placing my hands on his chest as he suddenly slammed his fist on the tree above my head causing me to flinch and close my eyes. I wasn't aware I was shaking in fear.
"HOW LONG ESME?" He roared as I gulped unable to look up into his eyes.
"Since the drought." I whispered scared under my breath as he fell silent and pulled away from me. I watched him as he rubbed his face and ran his fingers through his hair, something he did when he was frustrated.
"Well at least your not accusing me of witchcraft" I spoke trying to lighten the mood as he merely glared at my attempt to make a joke. I fell silent and rubbed my forearm ashamed as I looked up to the sky and muttered a swift prayer.
"That was a month ago. You watched me mourn for you! You knew I couldn't forgive myself for what I had done to you and you let me suffer?" He finally spoke as I snapped my eyes back to him. How could he think I enjoyed watching him suffer as I scoffed at him wondering if he knew me at all?
"Not being able to tell you the truth has been the hardest thing I've ever done." I defended.
"Did it ever occur to you to tell me? When were you going to tell me you were alive?" He argued back as I rolled my eyes and rubbed my face and let out a deep breath struggling to control my own temper.
"I didn't want you to find out the way you did" I told him back shortly.
"Were you ever going to tell me?" He questioned as I turned to glare at him with my hands on my hips.
"Of course! But I wanted it to be on my terms and when I knew you were ready for the shock!" I barked at him as he stormed over to me and looked down at me our noses almost touching.
"You don't get to decide that for me!" He hissed down at me as neither of us backed down from our tempers that were beginning to fume.
"I saw everything for how it was when I was under that cloak. Nothing was shielded from me anymore and I saw what my death had done to you. Have you even considered how much I had to give up by pretending to be Wolf? I had to watch you destroy yourself piece by piece and I had to stand there and do nothing. NOTHING!" I furiously hissed back trying to get him to see my side of the story as he shook his head down at me and stepped back.
"Whose fault is that?" he chuckled darkly as I folded my arms over my chest.
"It was a price I had to pay. I paid it to ensure I could keep the Prince in line." I retorted.
"By being Prince John's pet!" He shrieked as let out an angered growl.
"I was his 'protector' and I did what I had to do to ensure I could protect you!" I tried to get him to see reason as I pointed as him as he glared at me.
"You're loyal to the PRINCE!" He angrily snapped as I was certain the entire woods could hear our argument.
"I am LOYAL TO ENGLAND! I'm loyal to you Guy. I worked my way through the ranks so that when I would return to Nottingham I could protect you against the Prince. He is a nasty piece of work and I knew that I had to protect you." I informed him as I saw him wince at the mention of being loyal to England, that was what got me killed the first time.
"I was fine without your interfering" He proudly spoke as I scoffed as he tried to walk away only to have me storm on after him. He wasn't going to get away so easily.
"How many times have I saved your life? How many times have I told you of the Prince's or Sheriff's plans to get rid of you and to warn you when your life was in danger? Can't you see how my deception of who I was helped keep you alive?" I demanded trying him to see past his pride and his pain to see how much this was hurting me and how much I love him.
"I don't need protection! Especially not from a liar like you!" He threw back as I stumbled in my step and felt like he had placed his sword right through me once more. We both fell silent as he looked away and rubbed his forehead realizing the cost of his words as I swallowed the lump forming in my throat.
"Well this liar loves you. Do you believe that?" I softly spoke watching his face, as he couldn't look me in the eyes as I saw him clench his fists that shook.
"I can't believe anything that comes out of your mouth." Guy snapped back to me causing me to fall silent. I felt my face pale and my heart shatter as he continued to glare at me. I was frozen in my place heartbroken at the thought that he didn't believe I loved him. It was only when he turned away shaking with fury and tried to leave that my feet unglued as I raced towards him.
"Guy" I begged my voice breaking as I reached for his forearm to stop him as he retched his away from me like I had burned him.
"Don't touch me" He hissed as I ignored him and grabbed hold of him trying to get to face him so he could see my love for him in his eyes.
"Please" I spoke before he jolted away from my touch and spun around. It took me a moment to register the pain as I lay on the forest floor. My fingers placed a bit of pressure onto my lip only to retract and notice blood. He had split my lip as my left cheek felt numb from pain as I could feel the bruise beginning to form already. The anger drained from his face as he realized what it was he had done as Robin made himself known.
"Robin. Don't," I whispered as I saw the pure anger on his face was evident and before I could leap to my feet to ensure he didn't do anything stupid. Robin had leapt on Guy and they began to roll down a hill throwing punches.........
