December 6th National Microwave Oven Day.

It's National microwave oven day,

a Percy Spencer discovery using radar,

he found that the waves given off

had melted his chocolate bar.

Popcorn was the first food to be cooked

in an oven called the Radarange,

it is something we take for granted,

in 1945 it must have seemed strange.

It was during World War II that Percy Spencer, while testing equipment for use in Allied radar, noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket had began to melt. He then conducted a series of tests on other foods including popcorn and  eggs, he concluded that the energy from the electromagnetic waves was capable of cooking food quicker than any other means available. Spencer's employer Raythean took out a patent on October 8th 1945 for the "high frequency electric heating apparatus." The first commercially available microwave oven was almost 6 ft tall, weighed 750 lbs and cost $3000, mainly used by hotels and ships.
