Days On The Submarine (Part Five)

Previously...

"You can go to bed now, Miss Ara."

Before she leaves the deck, she glances over her shoulder, smiling for reasons that Law can't quite fathom.

"It's just Ara. You don't need to call me 'Miss' or anything like that."

"Goodnight, Ara."

She breaks out into a grin, and heads inside, shutting the door behind her.

(Note: I think this might be the last chapter of the Days On the Submarine. I know I said that I wanted to drag this out, but I'm getting impatient and I'm sure some of you want to find out what happens after chapter 4. )

Ara's P.O.V.

I don't appreciate being woken up early, especially when I'm actually having a good night's sleep for once.

So of course, I was just a smidgen pissed when Shachi woke me up at 6 a.m. in the morning.

I sent him to the infirmary with bruised arms, (although I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have been able to do that if I hadn't caught him by surprise) and that's how I ended up in Law's quarters, with a fuming captain.

"Again, Ara? This is the sixth time you've caused an injury this week."

I open my mouth to protest, but he cuts me off.

"First, while sleepwalking, you punched Icaru in the face. Then you blew up a stove in the kitchen. After that, you 'accidentally' kneed one of my navigators between the legs."

I shrugged. "Hey, in my defense, he was being a jackass."

He sighed, rubbing his eyes. "You're on probation for today. That means all the chores, so get to it."

He looks down at his desk, a clear sign of dismissal.

I'm looking up at the sky when Tabemo crouches down to look me in the eyes.

"Hi, Tabe-san."

"Probation again? What is this, the tenth time now?" Amusement glimmers in his voice.

"In my defense, as I said earlier, he was being a jackass."

The chef chuckles. "I'm sure Jobu would love to hear that." (That's the guy I kneed.)

"Doubt it," I mutter.

At this point, half of the the crew hates me, two-fifths tolerate me, and one-tenths are rooting for me. Can't blame them, honestly.

One-tenths of them, at least.

"Man, how can she be winning so easily?"

"Has to be cheating..."

"Devil's luck..."

I smirk and reveal my hand. "Royal Flush!" I call out, and I can't help the smug smile that simply just lights up my face.

Penguin groans, tossing cards to the deck in defeat. "I give up," he rants. "I'm done with poker."

Law, who has probably been watching us all this time, sits down next to Bepo, and holds out his hand to our 'dealer' (*cough* Shachi *cough*). The game continues again, and pretty soon, it's down to Law, Yuusha, and I.

I take one look at my cards and inwardly groan. Looks like my luck finally ran out.

Law has this poker face that I just can't crack, and Yuusha still has that absentminded look in his eyes. I can't predict either of them.

"Fold," I say, playing it safe.

Yuusha passes as well.

"Full House," Law says quietly, placing his cards down.

Yuusha and I hand over some of our hard-earned money. I stand up, spent. The sun's started to set, so I headed back into my room, inhaling the fresh scent of pine.

I crashed onto my bed, smiling. Today had been fun, and tomorrow, we'd be at the first island.

My adventure, it starts for real now.
