Chapter 45
You gazed outside the window of the taxi that you were in, having reached finally to Busan after some hours. The buildings of the city were exactly as you had left them and nothing new seem to fall to your attention yet for some odd reason you were excited and you couldn't help but smile at the memories and warm feelings that you had experienced in the past in this place .
"Towards the beach, please." You Instructed the driver and he nodded his head, looking at you from the rear mirror.
You didn't bother taking your eyes off the window however till you felt something touching your shoulder and you turned your head only to see Jimin's head laying on it, his eyes closed. You Took a better look at him and you realized that he was still sound asleep as he has been for a while now and he must have just shifted his position, ending up leaning on you.
A smile threatened to appear on your lips as you observed his sleeping face ,finding him so peaceful and cute at that moment. He had stayed up all night yesterday and it was obvious that at some point tiredness would take over him however you were surprised how well he would hide his condition as till you entered into the vehicle , he had left no signs of exhaustion. After staying for a while though in the warm environment without having anything to do or make any movements , he had dozed off and you had let him be since you had a long way till you were to arrive to the destination that you wanted to go. A place that Jimin was still uninformed of as when you had instructed the driver to head out of Seoul , he hadn't heard you.
"Miss?" The voice of the driver called to you as he had reached on a cross road and he needed you to infrom him of which way he should go and you took your eyes off of the sleeping face of Jimin before telling him to turn right. Unintentionally though you moved your upper body as you replied and Jimin's head slipped from your shoulder and onto your lap, making your body grow stiff at that moment and your eyes to avert at the driver whom had checked your movements out from the mirror. You weren't sure if he knew who you were or he just found the moment inappropriate but non the less you decided to wake Jimin up by shaking his shoulder a bit.
He stood straight immediately and threw his eyes around in a clear confusion , then he locked eyes with you and bowed his head, apologizing . You said nothing back as you felt conscious of the drivers eyes and you just threw your eyes again out the window, counting the minutes where you will arrive .
"Emm..Miss Y/N? Where are we?" You heard Jimin asking however you ignored his question as your focus was somewhere else and that was the house that fell to your sight at the top of the stoned covered stairs.
You instantly urged the driver to halt and once the vehicle came to a stop , you stepped outside feeling the afternoon breeze against your skin, that even though was cold, didn't bother you at all. A smile reached at your lips as you kept looking at the house that was at a small distance from you having lost connection with the environment for a moment. Jimin however understood that while he looked at you and decided to take care of things on his own, as he payed the taxi driver and took off the luggage you two had brought along.
You snapped out of it once you heard the vehicle taking off and you turned around to see Jimin, holding your bag while his backpack was on his shoulder. "I suppose this isn't your parent's house." He said as he smiled a bit then he made some steps towards you.
"I didn't know you had a house in Busan tho." He added , now looking at the house that he had noticed you staring at .
"It's not mine but i have keys." You replied before flashing him a smile that got him by surprise. Till this day , he had never seen you smile so widely and with that kind of excitement radiating through your eyes.
You rushed a bit towards the gate of the house but unfortunately you got tired soon, as your body condition was still weak and didn't manage to live up to the feelings that had gathered inside you. "There there, take it easy Y/N." Jimin grabbed your arm as he rushed beside you, giving you a worried look as your sudden halt had scared him for a moment.
"I am okay, i just forgot." You retrieved yourself from his hold and started walking more slowly this time towards the small gate after which laid eighteen stair steps. Stairs covers with stone tables and flower vases standing at the end of each side. Vases that were now empty as the flowers had withered, leaving a sense of abandonment and death behind.
Once in front of that gate, you grabbed the keys which you had placed in your pocket earlier for easy access and unlocked the door, that once you pushed it , let you know of the years that it had not been opened, the cracking sounds of the metal and the power that you needed to use to push it, being clear signs of rustiness.
You made the first step inside and for some reason your felt your chest getting heavy as you recalled a memore of her, rushing up those stairs, with canvases all over her hands then she turned around and smiled at you ,telling you to hurry up. That small image flew with the wind just the way it came ,making you smile even though your eyes had gotten watery.
Maybe coming to this place was not the best idea as this place held many memories that were now bitter for you because your best friend was no more, however you couldn't deny the fact that it's been years since you felt such strong emotions and somehow even though those emotions weren't easy on you , they made you feel alive. Frozen in time as you were, you felt someone grabbing your hand and you looked down at it before looking up at Jimin whom took some steps up the stairs then looked behind him, flashing you a smile before telling you to hurry up and at that moment you looked at him with widen eyes, surprised at how he had just done exactly what MinHee in your recalling memory did.
"Do you feel unable to get up the stairs? Should i carry you?" He questioned as he had taken hold of you so he could support you but you still seemed stuck in place and reluctant to make a step, making him think that you may not be finding the strength to climb up those stairs after all.
"No, no. I ..just spaced out." You replied as you pulled back your hand from his hold and started walking up the stairs and surpacing him a step or two ,in an attempt to not meet his gaze again.
You didn't hesitate to unlock the main door once you halted at the door mat that welcomed you with the same smiling face that had printed on it for years even though it was now more worned out than you recalled it. You pushed the door open and you placed the security code on the machine in order for the security alarm to not go off , then you switched on the lights, coming face to face with an environment covered with dust.
"It looks like we have some cleaning to do." Jimin commented as his steps brought him right beside you then he left the bags he was carrying, slam to the floor. He unbuttoned the jacket of his butler uniform and took it off, soon placing it on your shoulders, neatly.
"Take a seat somewhere and wait till i fix things around here, okay?" He told you while his hands were still on your shoulders then they traveled to your cheeks where he lightly cupped your face, before laughing a bit then going away in search of products that would help him clean this place and you just observed him go, surprised and taken aback a bit by his touchy behavior which even though wasn't unusual for him, it still made you nervous and alert.
---change of set---
Namjoon had excused himself from the room where Sujae and SooLin were as he had received a phone call from his job. He stood in the corridor ,speaking lowly so he didn't want to disturb anyone while his coworker was informing him of a case that arrived to them this morning and of which he knew that Namjoon would be interested as he was always a fan of murder cases.
"A murder? Today? " Namjoon questioned before he let a sigh escape his lips of disappointment as he could not leave SooLin and go there no matter how intrigued he was of such things.
" To Whom is it assigned too?" He added and his coworker said that he was taking care of it however he was willing to pass it to him , if he was to promise to buy him some beers. He heard laughter through the line once his coworker told him that and he immediately knew that , his buddies were out to get to his wallet.
"Aish, these guys. Just save me the case, you won't be able to solve it anyway." He purposely replied ,not intending to let his Sunbae outsmart him.
"Yah! Are you looking down on me? Of course i can!" The man replied through the line and Namjoon smirked knowing that he got him where he wanted to.
"Of course you can. You have solved so many cases. Everyone looks up to you and respects you -even though you have this small habit of never paying at any gatherings-.. Keep the case, you need it more than i do."
"Yah! what are you talking about?! I make money more than you do , you rascal. I don't need the case. You take it. And when did i not paid?! Everyone, let's go for some drinks after. It's on me!" He heard his coworker saying through the phone and he couldn't help but snicker at how he fell for his trap. Silence fell to the line for a bit after ,making him laugh more as he understood that by now he had realized what he made him do.
"You are the worst !" The man claimed before hanging up and Namjoon just smiled as he decided to text him, knowing that if he was to call, he wasn't going to respond .
" Send me the infromation regarding MY case Sunbae-nim."
---Time skip----
"Are you sure you don't need any help?" You asked Jimin whom was on the ladder, cleaning up the chandelier that was placed in the living room.
He had dusted off and cleaned up the couch first thing so you could have a comfortable seat and rest then even though you had offered to give a helping hand , he had strongly denied ,bringing up your health condition . So , you basically had ended up just watching him clean up the kitchen and now the living room while you snagged against the blanket which you and your friend used to share and which was in a perfectly fine condition, waiting folded in the closet of the single bedroom that existed in this small house.
This place had nothing luxurious around exactly as she had wanted it, as she was the one that had arranged the interior design and everything around this small house. The small cosy living room with the chimney that you had yet to light it up even though you had checked behind the house at the place where the wood was kept and it was full of them. The colorful furniture that she had painted on them herself, leaving in every small corner of this house, a piece of her art. Even that chandelier that Jimin was cleaning up at that moment was ordered by her and designed by her and she had even placed the wooden chandelier up there with her own two hands, claiming it to be the strongest thing in that house.
"I got this but if you can bring me the bowl with the water closer , would be nice." He replied and you slowly stood up and headed to the table, grabbing the bowl with water that he had left there and lifting it up for him to reach. He dipped the cloth he had in his hand into the water and then squeezed the water out of it before getting back to carefully cleaning up the chandelier.
"Did you and your friend used to come here ofter?" He asked ,picking up the conversation as you earlier had explained to him to whom this house belonged to ,asking him to be extra careful with whatever he touches.
"Well , as often as we were allowed to. We had some busy lives back then. School, studies , dance lessons. protocol lessons, business , finance, piano, language lessons. Our schedules were filled since we were young but when we would get fed up , we used to run away and come here. This was the only place that had some sense of freedom for us." You replied, unintentionally letting out more than necessary as you were still overwhelmed with emotions that this place awakened in you.
"Sorry, i am ranting ."
"I don't mind, don't worry." He looked down at you as he responded ,flashing you a small smile, then he focused his gaze back on the place he was cleaning when suddenly he took a look at the ceiling , noticing some evident cracks all around the chandelier. His movements came to a a halt as he observed the cracks a bit closer and his mind travelled to a thought that made him uneasy.
"Was this the place where she left her last breath?" He blurred out his thoughts without realizing that he had spoken out loud and you looked at him ,with widen eyes, taken aback by his sudden question that woke unpleasant feelings inside you.
"Oh! I am sorry. I didn't mean to-. You don't have to answer." He tried to fix the mess he created after you fell quiet however he knew that bringing such a thing up wasn't nice to do. He quickly got down from the ladder and got a hold of the bowl with water which you were still holding and put it aside then he took a look at your eyes that avoided to look directly at him and he couldn't help but feel more sorry and bring you in his embrace.
He held you tight as he repeated a few more time that he was sorry and that you should forget what he said and you remained quiet as the warmth of his body and the care he was showing, made the sad feeling inside you soothen a bit. It wasn't his fault that she was no longer alive but the mere thought of him feeling so sorry for bringing sad memories to your mind, made you somehow feel loved at that moment.
"It's okay. "You finally responded, putting his thoughts a bit at ease but to his displeasure you pulled back from his hug and walked back to the couch as if nothing had happened. He kept observing you for a moment, contemplating if he should come near you or let this be and then he turned around to get up the ladder again and finish what he was doing, deciding that maybe after what he said , he would do better to let you and your thoughts alone.
The silence that filled the room made Jimin grow rather sad inside and a bit guilty as he assumed of the thoughts that may be running in your mind right that moment and he didn't like the feeling that the fact that it was his loose mouth that had brought the atmosphere to this gloomy state, was the cause of your quiet presence.
"This wasn't the place the police found her body. She hang herself in her room ." Your words echoed in the room, disturbing the silence and bringing Jimin's thoughts to a halt.
"Even though that night she was supposed to have been here instead and meet up with him." More words excaped your lips ,without you even taking notice yet that you were spilling your thoughts out loud in a murmur that was clear enough in Jimin's ears because of the silence that existed in the room.
"What happened that made her return home and kill herself that night?.. Only if i knew, what the heck did he exactly do to her." Jimin tilted his head as he listened at your last sentence then he turned his gaze back on the ceiling , giving one more look at the cracks that were too many and all gathering towards the center point , that was non other than the chandelier. They were no cracks that could happen because of time and he grew more certain by every moment that ticked away - and he kept observing them- that those cracks where the creation of a heavy weight ,pulling on the chandelier.
A potential weight being a human body hanging itself from there. But if MinHee had died in her room as you were claiming, why were those cracks on the ceiling here?
"Y/n" He called your name, bringing you out of the trail of thoughts that you had slipped into .
"Do you know the time of her death?" He asked with a serious gaze and you looked at him perplexed before replying.
"They found her early morning . The police said she had eight hours that had been lifeless by then. "
"Exact time she was found?" He questioned again as he stepped down the ladder and started looking for his phone , making you quiestion his actions inside your head but you replied non the less.
" 9. Breakfast time."
"Does anyone know the time she returned back home?" He locked eyes with you just before he finally took sight of his jacket and he rushed towards it, having left his phone on the pocket of it.
"No, as far as i know , there had been a black out that night and all security cameras were out of function in her house." As those words escaped your lips, you could sense that something was suspicious ,even though back then you had never payed attention to this detail because the fact of her death was bigger than any other thing. All you had ever cared about was to know the exact reason she died because you were sure that it was Taeyong's fault, but your mind had never jumped into questioning about the where or the how, since they were obvious. She had hang herself in her room but why were Jimin's questions now putting those facts to doubt ?
