Part 1
(P.S. AI really does make finding the perfect face claim so much easier)
I lifted a silver dagger slowly before gently drawing it across the palm of my hand and holding it over a bowl of burning coals. I allowed several drops to fall upon the hot stones like red rain drops before retracting my hand.
Faint whispers of surprise sounded around the room as I walked over to the Dauntless section who were all whooping excitedly. Regardless of the cheering, I kept my expression blank as I walked past the Candor section. I could feel both my parents and my sister's eyes' burning into my skin. I should have turned to look at them, at least one last time, but I didn't.
I wasn't quite sure if Dauntless was exactly the right fit for me but it was the only faction that I might have a chance in. Or at least that's what I thought.
I'd taken the aptitude test just a day earlier, just like everyone else, but, for some reason, I came out as something called a 'divergent'. My test giver did little to explain what a 'divergent' was other than to tell me that I shouldn't tell anyone about it. The fear in her eyes was enough for me to keep my lips sealed and not breathe a word.
That wasn't the most promising thing to hear after taking the test that would determine my life and it would be a lie to say I wasn't a little worried about being a 'divergent'. I should have felt comfortable enough to tell my parents but with their Candor honesty and general distaste for my lack of Candor, it didn't seem smart.
So I kept it to myself, not even telling my one good friend Leroy, who was also trasnfering out of Candor anway. Me being a Divergent would remain a secret as my test administer had instructed. I was good at keeping secrets. What was one more?
I couldn't worry for much longer as I found myself suddenly sprinting out of the ceremony with my new faction. A mob of black outfits exited the building in seconds, I among them.
I couldn't help but smile as we took off whooping wildly with glee. I savored the feeling of the wind blowing through my thick brown hair as it whipped behind me like a horse's mane.I followed the group out, staying close to the flank as they came to a stop at train track pillars that led to the actual train rail above us. To my surprise, the Dauntless members suddenly began climbing the red pillars. Similar to me, the rest of the transfers gawked at the sight but we quickly realized that the Dauntless weren't going to wait on us.
I quickly snapped out of my daze and disregarded all safety by following them up the pillars. I forced myself to keep my eyes ahead and to not dare to look down. I gritted my teeth in concentration and held on tight. My skinny arms were burning by the time I finally made it up there and if I weren't wearing the black and white of Candor, one could easily see the perspiration stains under my arms.
There was a stationary train waiting for us at the top of the rail and many Dauntless had already boarded. The Transfers filed in to the back of the train hastily, most of us ending up in the same compartment.
There were about 20 of us total
I leaned quietly against the wall of the train as it took off, trying to quietly catch my breath and settle my heart rate. My pale brown eyes quietly scanned the group of bodies for familiar faces.
I found two and both were from Candor. A boy named Morsov, who was around 6'1 with sleek black hair and a lean but decently muscular build. The second was his twin sister named Emer. She wasn't as big as Morsov, maybe an inch shorter than I was, but she had the same facial features as her brother with slanted, narrow eyes and perfectly dark straight hair.
Some of the transfers had started conversation with each other. I took note specifically of one of the Erudite boys, who spoke knowingly to a short Abnegation girl whose expression openly showed her annoyance at whatever the boy was saying.
I pulled my long, thick brown hair over my shoulders in an attempt to cool down. The breeze picked up as the train continued down the tracks, causing my baby hairs to waft into my eyes.
"Hair tie?" A female voice suddenly asked. I turned to look at the source only to see a girl of my age standing right next to me. She wore the red and pastel clothing of Amity and had very long curly red hair. Her eyes were a welcoming auburn color that contrasted against her pale skin and high cheekbones.
I looked down at the black hairband she held before accepting it gratefully. "Thank you," I said and she nodded politely. I extended a hand out of polite habit."I'm Ferris."
She took my hand with a surprisingly firm grip. "Rency," She replied and I nodded, suddenly unsure of what to say next. Conversation was hardly my strong suit unless it was cheeky sarcasm.
"Candor huh?" She asked, glancing down at my black and white clothing.
I nodded "Amity?" I asked back even though I already knew the answer.
"Yup," She said with a far away smile while gazing out of the large opening in the train compartment. " I had to get out of that place."
"Picking berries and being nice to everyone ain't really my thing either" I claimed while putting up my hair and she laughed softly in agreement.
I decided that I liked her smile.
Rency opened her mouth to say something but suddenly all conversation stopped as loud whoops and yells could be heard from the front compartments. I looked out of the train to see what they were yelling at and only saw a large grey building approaching.
"Time to jump!" Was just one of the few loud cheers coming from the Dauntless born.
Jump?
Wait......... did they mean we would have to jump from the train to the nearby building? Why couldn't we just stop the train?
My question was soon answered as I saw bodies clad in black jumping from the train and landing hapazardly on the roof. Some stayed on their feet and others barreled roll onto the roof. I took a breath when my heart started thumping rapidly at the realization of what I was about to do. I glanced at Rency who suddenly looked scared and unsure but we didn't have time to contemplate.
"Just jump!" I said loudly and then jumped myself.
That feeling of weightlessly flying through the air lasted for half a second until I very ungracefully landed on the roof of the building. By the time my momentum slowed and I came to a rolling stop, I'd earned a stinging burn on my forearm.
However, I quickly regained my footing, not wanting to show weakness. Beside me, Rency was still on the floor. Her fiery hair sprawled all around her face. She groaned while standing up and I offered her a hand so that she could regain balance.
"That was exciting" She said absently brushing stray rubble from her skinny arms. I snorted but didn't say anything mostly because I couldn't manage to form words over the erratic beating in my chest.
If this is what it felt like to be a Dauntless every day, maybe it was so bad.
I turned around to see the rest of the transfers gathering around two men who stood on the ledge of the building. One of which was a stocky black male with a strong disposition and a slightly crooked nose. The second was an imposing blonde with two piercings above his eyebrow and black, almost tribal like tattoos that ran up his neck. He might have been in his early 20s and was easily half a foot taller than me. (and I'm 5'9)
I couldn't deny that he was handsome but he looked like the kind of man who could break both my legs without even trying.
Not sure if that's attractive or not.
"Alright, listen up! My name is Eric and if you become a Dauntless, I will be one of your leaders." The large blonde said loudly, quickly gaining the attention of every transfer. He then gestured behind him. "If you want to enter Dauntless, this is the way in."
The transfers exchanged weary glances at each other once we saw what he was talking about. About a hundred yards below was a massive hole in the ceiling of a lower building, presumably the entrance Dauntless, with no bottom in sight.
It certainly didn't look welcoming, not to mention probably not safe. I don't like heights and I definitely don't enjoy jumping from heights.
But what other choice did I have? I couldn't return home to Candor or my family. Neither wanted me back much.
Eric's hawk like gaze looked over us with a small, almost evil smirk at the corner of his lips. "And if you don't have the guts to jump, then you don't belong in Dauntless" Eric added. Suddenly his penetrating blue gaze caught mine. I should have looked away but I couldn't force myself to break eye contact. It was like I was hypnotized. His brows furrowed, most likely interpreting my stare down as a challenge of his dominance.
My attention was finally diverted as a transfer spoke up. "Is there like water at the bottom or something?" A large boy from Abnegation asked
"I guess you'll just have to find out" Eric answered with a shrug. The Abnegation boy gulped worriedly.
Eric looked over us. "Someone has to go first," He announced, sounding bored. There was a moment of awkward silence as the two leaders looked at us expectantly.
It wasn't quiet for another moment and I didn't like the awkward silence so, against all logic, I eventually took a step forward. The transfers in front of me stepped aside and I didn't have to look to see Rency's expression of surprise.
"I'll go," I said softly, feeling strangely small even though I literaly wasn't all that little.
"What was that?" Eric asked, bringing a calloused hand up to his ear in sass. I had a feeling he'd heard me perfectly.
"I said I'll go," I snapped back quickly before thinking and returned Eric's glare. However, while others may not have been able to see it, I saw what I think might have been surprise flash across his eyes. But it disappeared as quickly as it came.
I stepped on to the ledge carefully, not interested in losing balance and plummeting to my untimely death. I peered over the edge and my heart rate spiked.
"Any time now Candor," Eric's voice taunted from beside me.
I didn't turn to look at him before falling forward.
