Calm Before The Storm

(A/N: Long story short, my sister dropped my phone in a lake and I had to go a week without a phone in Arkansas. I haven't been able to post anything by school's about to start and I'm stressed about finishing some online classes among other things. I had a shit week last week, and I just hope y'all enjoy this chapter. Hope y'all had a better week than I did) WC: 2939

Yoongi felt guilty for lying to his mother, but he couldn't tell her that the only man left in her life was about to follow in his fathers rubber clad footsteps.

After the trio dropped him off to formulate a lie and gather his necessary items, he had walked into his home of 20 years, and lied to his unsuspecting mother straight to her face.

She just nodded in understanding, glad that her son was going to go help his friends elderly grandmother during the storm. Proud even that her son didn't need to be coaxed through a storm of such altitude, and instead helping another in need.

The guilt was eating him alive upon leaving his currently untroubled mother on her own, knowing he wasn't the only one afraid of storms. But she just waved him off, saying she'll manage, maybe even go to her friends house and stay there instead of by her lonesome self. It calmed Yoongi, but only slightly. He still felt like shit, knowing if he didn't come back his mother would be heartbroken that he had lied. Not to mention, leaving her in solitary and feeling cursed. Yoongi would have died in the same fashion as his father, when he had so much potential.

But he pushed all thoughts of guilt, and anything even relating to those thoughts, to the back of his mind. Checking his bag once more, he looked for his sextant, octant, and compass. Knowing that the sailors already had a map just in case.

Yoongi stated that it was too dangerous to try and navigate in the storm, it would just end with them getting more lost than anything else. So, they would anchor during the storm at the mariners 'siren hunting ground', then proceed to heave to. The act of stationing the boat (with its sails still up) so it is almost completely still, where its position is relative to the waves and winds and there is less of a chance of 'going overboard'. Basically safety precautions to try and ensure their survival through the small cyclone.

After the storm passes, and they are hopefully still in one piece, Yoongi will proceed with navigating them back to land. Even if they don't end up on their home island, as long as they can find land to identify, they can get home easily.

That was the plan.

Yoongi volunteered to go below deck while they are trying to wrangle 'sirens', staying within the cramped space and counting down the minutes till the storm settles. Hopefully he won't have an episode...he'll just read through it.

He arrived back at the barren docks, looking back towards the ghost town that was his home. Everyone sane were already in their homes, locked away and safe. While he was busy for-filling his death wish, and wondering if he was just destined to die in a storm chasing sirens like his father...

Probably.

As he walked down the pier, he noted all the boats that were tied down, sails tucked away. The water was still progressively getting choppier, normally the water would be sightly clear with a hint of murkiness. Now, with all the churning and tossing, the water was an angry black. The lack of sun, or even moonlight, casting darkness upon the water. Except it was even darker than usual, leaving Yoongi to stuff his feelings into a little box. Locking that box and tossing it on shore, because lord knows Yoongi wasn't taking them with him.

He didn't want to have a panic attack on the boat, he was positive those three meatheads didn't know the first thing about calming down someone having a said panic attack.

He arrived at The King Munmu, taking in the faded paint that was chipping away. Barnacles sticking from the hull, all the way to the stern. The helm being located behind 3 rickety walls and a hardtop towards the stern of the boat, fiberglass lining a good two feet at eye level. The chines were straight and sharp only curving out slightly to give some dimension. Large fishing rods lined the gunwale, lifelines running from the chines to the point of the hull. The boat was around 30 to 40 feet long, and was swaying with the rolling waves. A plank rising up and down from where it connected the jetty and The King Munmu.

It was definitely an old boat, it was evenmade from wood.

Hisv anxiety worsened.

Shaking his head, Yoongi tried to listen for the usual hustle and bustle that was preparing for a thunderstorm. But all he could hear was the violent howl of the wind as it tried to whip away his bag, sending his hair to slap his face repeatedly.

He silently cursed his longer hair, cupping his hands around his lips as he shouted.

"OLD MAN!"

There was no response for a fleeting moment, that is until a booming voice sounded from behind the semi-enclosed helm.

"OVER HERE DREAMER!"

Asshat.

Yoongi glanced down at the moving plank, wary of the unstable wood.

That is, until two beefy arms swept him off the jetty. Holding the smaller bridal style, Intak peeled his lips back to showcase his over-sized dentures. Yoongi was ready to protest, when the other made a beeline for the plank. The younger only able to get a yelp out before he was crossing over choppy seas, jerking slightly at the uneven rise and fall of the ship that only caused the plank to rise higher.

It was all over in an instant, for he was now on the ship. Which unlike the pier, was jerking every which way.

Although he was onboard the boat, Intak had yet to set him back down. His matted hair rubbing against Yoongi's face, and he wasn't happy about it.

"You know you can put me down now, right?"

The other only grinned larger.

"But I like carrying you around,"

Yoongi was sure if he rolled his eyes any harder, they wouldn't have been able to roll back into place.

"Put me down meathead,"

Yoongi started to hit his chest in a weak protest to let him down, but the other only threw back his head and laughed. Moving towards the helm, he held Yoongi tighter. He was so close the younger was sure the scent had already rubbed off on him, and now he smelt of rotten fish and salt.

The Dreamer hadn't let up in his punches, knowing full well they didn't hurt, but he was sure they caused at least a minor annoyance.

Upon reaching the helm, Hyunshik looked up from checking the life vests that sat in a box beside the helm. Raising a brow at the cross armed Yoongi who had the worlds largest pout on his face, and an overly happy Intak.

"Intak, I know you think he is cute and adorable, but you need to let the poor boy down."

Hyunshik jutted his chin towards the unhappy ravenette, who just glared at the duo of fishermen.

"But he's so pretty, and he weighs nothin- "

"Intak."

Now the younger fisherman was pouting, and Yoongi was biting back a smile at the parental role Hyunshik had taken. Speaking to the shorter like he was a child who couldn't understand the words that were coming out of his mouth.

With a grumbled 'but he's so cute' he set down the Dreamer, prompting Yoongi to put at least 3 feet of distance between the two. Rubbing his wrist and back of his hand against his face like a cat, as he tried to rub away the feeling of scratchy hair clawing at his face.

Intak grinned and ruffled his hair, before scampering away to avoid Yoongi's swinging fists.

"Asshole,"

Hyunshik smiled before returning to counting life vests, leaving Yoongi to peer over the controls.

"So," Hyunshik grunted in acknowledgment, "How exactly are you planning to catch a 'siren',"

Yoongi bent his fingers down in air quotations at the word siren, making sure to get his point across that he saw this as a waste of time. That sirens weren't real, and he wasn't here because he believes, but because he's a good guy who's in desperate need of money.

At the question, Hyunshik shut the wooden box with a satisfied grin. Straightening himself back to his full height, which had to be at least 4 inches taller than Yoongi himself. The smaller scrunched his nose at the thought, craning his neck to glare weakly at the taller.

"You know, you could have just stayed crouching. You didn't have to stand up...like, all the way,"

The other cackled, patting the smallers head. Completely ignoring the shrieked curses, and swatting hand.

"You know, Intak might not be the sharpest tool in the shed. But he was right about one thing, you are adorable,"

Yoongi growled low, snarling as he hit Hyunshik square in the chest. The other didn't budge, just cooed at the red faced Dreamer. The fisherman didn't know if he was red from embarrassment, or anger. He did like the idea of the former though.

"Just answer the damn question, then show me where the hatch is for below deck so I can escape you imbeciles,"

Hyunshik nodded mutely, still smirking. Yoongi wanted to punch off that arrogant smirk the same way he did not that many hours ago.

"You see that circular hanging do dad,"

Yoongi bit back the need to question and/or tease Hyunshik for saying 'do dad', and instead looked at where his finger was pointing at.

That's when he saw a steel cylinder, wide but not at all tall. It looked like a gear missing its teeth, just smooth around the edges.

He nodded.

"That, is called a power block, do you know what those do?

Yoongi glared at him for using that same childish tone he had used with Intak, on him. But stayed silent as he shook his head.

"Power blocks make it so when we throw our seine net into the water, we can use a remote, that I have stored by the helm, to pull up the net without having to use brute force to pull endless rope and net on board."

Yoongi soaked up the simplified explanation, knowing its probably more complicated than that, but deciding against a whole lecture on nets and pumps, and all sorts of shit he didn't have the time nor patience for.

"So, when we throw in our net, anything that swims into it, say a very large fish," Hyunshik gestured to the other crew members setting up the net. "Depending on the strength and size of the fish- "

"A siren," Yoongi supplied, knowing what the other was hinting at.

"Yes, a siren for example," The older grinned down at the other, resting his hand on the Dreamers shoulder. "If the siren were to try and get out of the net, knowing how strong the creatures are, the power block would jerk from the force. Signaling us that something large and strong was pulling at our net, so we would close the net completely and cut off any escape routes,"

Yoongi was amazed at how thought through his plan was, yes, it wasn't fool proof. Plenty of things could go wrong, but he had a good structure of a plan.

"After it's trapped, we have the power block pull 'er up. We detach the net, and transfer it to a smaller more compact net, a stainless steel net to be exact, so it can't claw out. Then we shove it below deck where it can't call for others, although the more sirens the better. We don't want to be too greedy, too many of them and we could go down,"

Again, Yoongi was left gaping at the plan. How long had Hyunshik been planning this?

"Close that mouth of yers, you're goin' to catch flies,"

The Dreamer clamped his mouth shut, wincing at the loud clack of his teeth ramming into each other.

The older laughed, removing his hand from his shoulder only to slam it back down in a series of harsh pats. Yoongi tumbled at the force, air getting knocked out from his lungs at he struggled to get away.

Once Hyunshik sobered up, he placed his hands on his hips. Staring out into the open ocean with an almost wistful look to his face.

Yoongi looked towards the sea, but didn't see what the older was looking at.

Sensing Yoongi's confusion, and burning stare, Hyunshik snapped out of his gaze. He looked a bit sheepish as he rubbed the back of his neck. The Dreamer cocking his head to the side like a confused puppy.

"Nevermind me child, I'm just- "

He motioned his hands in random gestures, trying to get his point across through his hands, but failing miserably.

Yoongi raised his eyebrows, the older just dropped his hands. Slumping forward in defeat as he waved his hand dismissively.

"Its nothin' to concern yourself with, the hatch is in front of the helm. There should be a staircase goin' down in the middle of that sloped area over yonder,"

He gestured vaguely towards the front of the ship, where there was a half oval in front of the helms little protection house. Starting halfway up the front wall, and sloping down for around 5 feet.

And just like he said, there was a cut out in the middle, with a steep staircase leading to a door. The door was small, but it was just perfect for Yoongi's size, with another door adjacent to the first door. Probably the head, Yoongi thought.

But before he made his way to where he'll be staying for the next few hours, he turned back towards Hyunshik. A certain question burning at the tip of his tongue, it had been itching at the forefront of his mind since he agreed to be an honorary member of The King Munmu's crew.

"Hey Hyunshik," The aforementioned turned at the name, barely audible, but the wind carried it to the lead fisherman.

"What is it Dreamer?"

"What are you...what are you going to do with a siren if you were to find and catch one?"

The old man's smile turned into one of a Cheshire, decaying teeth on full display. His eyes turning dark as nothing but a sinister and menacing look overtook the mans features.

Yoongi visibly shrunk, stepping back at the threatening mien. He had never seen such a malicious look before in his whole life, not even in the movies. There was just this glint in his eyes, an almost crazed sensation emitting from the older. It all clashed with the eerie calm that was Hyunshik's voice.

"If, and when, I get my hands on a siren. There will be no saving that thing, after notifying the public about these creatures, and proving to the world - and that stupid bitch of an ex-wife - that I am not crazy. I will parade it around the whole world, charging crazy amounts of money to come and see a real, living, breathing, siren. I will use that money to live lavishly and get a team together to scour the worlds oceans for more of them. Then, after that, once my original siren has done its job. It will become the most expensive seafood to ever grace the market, the most expensive food on earth,"

Although Yoongi had a stoic face, internally he was horrified. Not only did Hyunshik think through his plan to catch the siren, but he even planned out everything after. If sirens were real, Yoongi was starting to feel bad for whichever poor soul ended up in that net.

Weren't they living beings as well? Or are they just as good as animals?

The Dreamer's hands were curled into his chest as he leaned back and away from the helmsman.

"Well, I'm glad I'm human,"

And just like that, the tension shattered. Hyunshik threw his head back in laughter, Yoongi dodging his swinging hands and let the wall take the brunt of the force.

"Go fuck off below deck Yoongs,"

The helmsman barely croaked out the words, but Yoongi was already bolting after he heard the word 'go'.

Thoughts of sirens, seafood, and captivity filled his mind as the flood gates opened for more questions to pour into his mind.

Why was he so obsessed with sirens?

Ex-wife...he had a wife?!

How would the world even react to sirens if they were real?

But more importantly-

Are sirens really on the same level of animals? Should they be held captive? Will they even survive in captivity?

And here Yoongi was, thinking about sirens when he was supposed to be a thorough non-believer, a skeptic.

I guess he got more from his father than just a love for the stars.
