The apprentices lay in their den, Tortoisepaw guarding the door while the others talked in hushed voices. "What are we going to do?" "Is this going to last forever?" Tortoisepaw sighed, trying to ignore the conversation and focus on the outside.

Suddenly, a figure from the bushes approached her, whispering, "Tortoisepaw. Tortoisepaw! Psst, come over here!"

The apprentice squinted, but walked over to the bushes slowly, scanning the surroundings and giving the den once last suspicious glance. "What is-"

The figure threw her backwards with a strong push, and she hit her head on a sharp rock that had been behind her. Tortoisepaw's head twitched for a moment, before her eyes glazed over and she lay still. A shadow quickly ran into the darkness as they heard a patrol approaching.

"No... so young..." A cat murmured. Onyxpool, who had taken a leadership position among them, scowled. "We must discuss who did this..."
