Chapter One
I didn't expect to wake up. Not at all. Considering I was cornered by a monster, the last thing I'd expect is waking up in a warm bed with bandages around my chest, my fractured arm in a sling, and my leg with a cold rag wrapped around it.
My stomach didn't growl and I didn't seem parched. Where was I? Why would this person take care of me? My questions were answered when a man walked in. He had black hair and gold eyes. The sign of an abnormal. His lips were a lush pink, his skin pale. A silver piercing in his left ear and a lip piercing. He wore a leather jacket with a black shirt and jeans, hiking boots donning his feet. He saw that I was awake upon entering.
"Good, you're awake. You've been asleep for a few weeks." The man smiled.
"You........ Helped me?" I question.
"You did kinda pass out and have broken ribs." He responded.
"Aren't you an abnormal?" I prod. His golden eyes flashed.
"Don't call me by that name, I despise it." The man hissed.
"Than what do I call you?" I question.
"Sousuke. It's my name. And you are?" He returns the question.
"Yukine. I go by Yu or Yuki." I inform. My hair was brown and my eyes were brown as well, pretty average, but at the same time, not at all. If that makes any sense.
"Okay then Yuki, your bones should be healed by now. Don't move, we'll try them out." Sousuke walked over and kneeled in front of the bed, grabbing what should be my sprained ankle. He rolled it around a bit and kinda seemed to be massaging it. "Do you feel any pain?" He questions. I shake my hand. "Then take your arm out of your sling and move it a bit."
"Okay." I take my arm out of the sling and move it around a bit. It didn't hurt. "Seemed like it's fixed." I comment.
"Okay, now sit up." I push off the bed and a slight pain stabs my side and I drop back down.
"Might need another day or so with the ribs." I inform.
"You don't have a day and neither do I." He gets on the bed and takes off my shirt. I flinch at his cold hands on my skin. They seemed to be feeling for the broken rib in question. He seemed to find it and I felt a sharp jab and then I felt light.
"What the hell?" I groan.
"Okay, try sitting up again." I comply and find the sharp pain gone.
"What did you do? It's fixed!" I exclaimed.
"I simply used my abilities. We can't stay in this place much longer. Werewolves are approaching and I'm sure they won't be happy that I 'borrowed' their mansion." He got up and let me put my shirt back on.
"What?" I question.
"We need to hurry. If you want to survive, come with me." Sousuke informs, holding out a hand.
"Why should I trust you? You're a monster too." His eyes flash again.
"Who else can you trust? I saved your life!" He exclaimed.
"Why?" I prod.
"The hell if I know!" He shouts then goes quiet. "You remind me of my little sister, that's all. She died in the church I found you in. You weren't pillaging, but looking for something, what was it?" He questions.
"My father died there, the church caught fire and burnt to the ground, I just hoped I'd be able to find his body to give him a proper burial." I sigh.
"Then we're one in the same. Come on, we need to get supplies and book it, I have a safe house a few states over. If we get there, we should be fine for a few months." I look at him.
"I don't know if you got a screw loose in that head of yours, but I suppose teaming up with you isn't the worst case scenario." I sigh.
"Good idea. Now come on, this is a long journey ahead of us." I sigh and follow him out of the room, pulling on some shoes and raiding the place with him. In less than an hour, we were out.
We stuck to the shadows since vampires and werewolves were lurking. I hoped it would be zombies because you could outrun them, but at least it's not ghouls. They eat their prey raw. And I would like to keep my life, thank you.
We soon made it to tall grass and darted through it, sticking low so no one could see us. Through this whole endeavor, we didn't exchange a single word. In fact, it wasn't until late into the night when we found an abandoned house did we finally speak again.
"Man this place is broken down." I comment.
"It has silver, dead man's blood and salt, it's safe." Sousuke informs.
"So, why are you on the run, you could just say I'm your prey." I informed.
"Oh, abnormals aren't liked by the others, we still retain a decent chunk of our humanity, but have the abilities of all the monsters. They envy us basically. They want what they could never have." Sousuke informs.
"They're jealous of your humanity, then they must absolutely be envious of humans." I joke.
"They are. Your lives are more precious, you value everything more. So of course, they're extremely envious." Sousuke drops down on a stable looking couch.
"I always though life would be better if we lived longer." I admit.
"That's because you've already lost a lot. You wish you had more time. I know what you're feeling. My mother died at birth when my sister was born and my sister died in a fire. I have never met my father, I was never there when he was with my mom. The one thing I always wished for was more time with each and every one of them." I drop down next to him.
"We're weird, aren't we?" I smile softly.
"As weird as they come. Digging in the rubble where the damned should've died, but only the sweet and holy were left to burn." He sighed. I grab his hand in a comforting gesture.
"The prettiest rose never lasts, and all the good times go by too fast. The saddest moments stay forever, to help us work through our next endeavor. We shall not weep for those who have fallen, for they do not wish to see us crawling." I put my head on his shoulder. "My dad used to tell me that. He'd ruffle my hair when I stood bravely, he'd smile whenever I smile. I miss him, but I can't weep for him, he wouldn't have wanted that." I inform, sighing.
"He sounds like a brave man." We sat there for a bit before getting up to grab some food from our bags. I pulled out an apple and went to the kitchen to see if the water worked. It did.
"I'm going to go shower, I haven't in a while and I probably smell terrible." I comment.
"Go ahead, but look for some towels first." Soon I was taking a shower and my clothes felt dirty when I put them back on, despite having taken them from that wolf mansion. I walk out and see the exposed back of Sousuke. There was a tattoo on it. A large one at that, but it was partially burned. I couldn't quite place the mark itself, but it consisted of some sort of circle, or many of them, and it was burnt where the most detailed circle was.
"Where'd you get that burn?" I question without thinking. He cast me a backwards glance.
"It's not important, forget you ever saw it." He walked past me with a stone cold face towards the bathroom. There's a lot I still have to learn about him, huh?
