Chapter 19

Words: 1035

Ryuk's POV*

'I give up ownership of the Death Note.'

~

I kicked the dusty floor. I had had a lot of fun in the human world. "Maybe I should drop my notebook more often." I thought mischievously and chuckled. Although I had been disappointed about the outcome. Human affections were stupid.

I walked about aimlessly - feeling mind numbingly bored now that I was back in the Shinigami world. Rem had come back with me but I hadn't seen her for days. I heaved a sigh and decided to go find her - maybe she'd like to talk to me about our experiences in the human world. At least it would kill time - which we all had lots of.

I walked round in search of my fellow Shinigami but couldn't find her anywhere. I approached a group of them, seeing if they knew. "Hey Grunt, have you seen Rem around anywhere?" I asked the one nearest me.

"Nope." He replied monotonously and laid down a poker hand. I rolled my eyes - they played card games all the time because there was nothing else left to do. Next time I was on earth I'd have to get some human technology so I'd have something to entertain myself.

"Sole?" I tried the next guy.

"I haven't looked up in 5 years, there's no way I would have seen her." He huffed, his voice rough and his skin crumbling. He was one of the Shinigami who hardly ever took lives from humans because he couldn't be bothered - this was causing him to erode away because he wasn't replenishing himself. Not like I cared.

"No need to be sarcastic." I cackled.

"She went to the portal." Griff - the third Shinigami choked out.

I didn't bother replying. I didn't need to say thank you and I couldn't be bothered to know how he saw her - I only needed to know her location. I soon reached the portal between the Shinigami world and the human world.

"Hello Rem." I announced but Rem didn't flinch.

"Hello Ryuk." She replied bluntly, eyes fixated on the portal where she was observing someone. I raised an eyebrow and looked into the portal to see her observing the boy who had picked up her Death Note.

"Oh, it's that PJ boy." I grumbled and flopped down beside her. "Is today the day?" I asked in a dismissive tone and yawned. I wasn't one for sentiment.

"Yes." She replied, her voice a little lower. For a second I thought I could detect sadness in her voice but it's hard to tell with Shinigami so I left it alone.

"How does he die?"

"Car crash."

"How boring." I sighed. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw Rem tense up but again I ignored it because to be honest I didn't care. "Why are you watching anyway?" I asked.

Rem didn't reply, she just continued to stare into the portal. I grumbled under my breath but took out an apple from my pocket. I glared at it. It was black and shrivelled up and tasted like ash. Shinigami apples tasted disgusting but they were all we had. I missed human apples already.

"It's time." Rem suddenly announced and, out of curiosity, I peered into the portal to witness the boy's last moments. He was with the one I believed was called Chris - at least that's what Dan told me at the time. They were chatting on the pavement when PJ suddenly pulled out his phone and started tapping on the screen. He took a sharp left onto the road and that's when I saw the car coming down the road at full speed.

"PJ!" Chris screamed and I watched in anticipation - it had been the most eventful thing to happen in the last month since I left earth behind.

Suddenly I heard a frantic shuffling beside me and I reluctantly turned to Rem and raised my eyebrows when she pulled out her personal Death Note and started scribbling a name down. I didn't stop her because I didn't care. However, I was annoyed that she would die before I got to talk to her and fill in time.

"You're making a mistake." I decided on - that was the closest I'll ever get to sentiment.

However Rem didn't listen and the sound of her pen stopped and she turned to look into the portal. I followed suite and looked down on the human world, watching as the car's driver gasped for breath and had a heart attack. His body fell on the wheel, swerving the car to the side and just barely missing PJ who was frozen in the middle of the road.

Chris ran out onto the street and pulled PJ back onto the pavement before hugging him close. I looked above PJ's head to see he'd live for another 60 years. I shook my head before turning to look at Rem who dropped her Death Note and sat there crumbling to dust. There was a small smile on her face and I frowned. I didn't say anything and just watched as she blew away in the wind.

She turned to me as half of her face began to disappear. "Farewell Ryuk. I hope you find your peace." She spoke soothingly - as if she was content.

I wasn't one for respect or anything but I nodded anyway and witnessed her last moments as she faded into nothing. I gave a frustrated sigh and reached over, picking up her Death Note. Emotions were stupid.

I looked back into the portal, watching as Chris and PJ kissed passionately. Suddenly Dan and Phil ran up behind them, quickly hugging PJ and asking if he was ok. I rolled my eyes and glanced at the black notebook in my clutch.

I was so bored.

I glanced at the portal then back at the book before a smirk fell on my face and I dropped the notebook into the portal.

"Time for some more fun." I thought and cackled.
