Chapter 02

Words: 1755

"Another one?" Mr Howell exclaimed.

"Chief, calm down." Joe urged, putting a hand on his shoulder.

"Calm down? CALM DOWN? How do you expect me to calm down when Kira is out there taking lives?" Mr Howell growled.

"I know but we can't lose our heads, there's been thirty in the last month-"

"31." A robotic voice corrected.

"Stop being a pedant L!" Marcus growled.

"We have to be precise about the numbers, maybe there is a pattern. I need to be precise in case we miss something." L explained. Marcus sighed, shaking his head.

"L ..." Mr Howell started, taking a deep breath in. "Can you tell the seven of us what you have come up with so far, go through all the details? We need to make sure we haven't missed anything.

"Of course Mr Howell ... Ok, I believe that Kira is in the country. 73% of his killings have been made inside the UK and on rare occasions in other countries, therefore there is a 98% chance that he is in this country. I've been looking at the times and dates of the killings and have managed to make out a pattern ..." L trailed off.

Everyone looked at the laptop with the large black 'L' on the white background. It sat there arrogantly until a folder of photos and documents showed up on the screen. The detectives downloaded the files and looked over them.

"What are your thoughts?" L asked curiously.

"It looks like a timetable." Marcus said.

"Yeah, like one for a younger person, maybe high school or university." Mr Howell agreed.

"That's what I assumed, from the large gaps in between some classes and other parts including weekends I assume that there's a 59% that it's a university student, and 41% high school student. It would be helpful knowing the way he kills his victims however, then we could figure out if Kira could kill people during school and classes, however this is not the case and we will just have to move on with what we do have. Now ... I have a plan to test Kira's personality and to see if my assumption about him being the country is 100% accurate. Now listen closely ..."

"PHIL I'M HOME!" Dan shouted into their apartment. He could be staying at the university but he preferred to rent his own place and meeting Phil was very convenient. They shared the rent together and became extremely close friends. Dan worked on weekends to earn money for the rent and sometimes earned some money helping his father out.

Dan Howell ... son to Mr Howell. Mr Howell was chief of police and was taking the Kira Investigation, being one of the few who decided to stay on the case.

"DAN!" Phil shouted from his room and exited. Dan grinned, he seemed like he was in a good mood. "Hey, I had some plans to go out today. I know you've got some studying to do but do you want to go out for coffee for a bit? We haven't really hung out for a while." He pleaded with his eyes.

Dan practically melted under his gaze. "Oh, alright. Just let me put my things away." Dan sighed but a grin tugged at his lips.

"Yay." Phil cheered and Dan smiled, walking on to his room.

Ok ... so maybe Dan liked Phil just a little bit ... or a whole lot. He had a pathetic crush on the man. He had been a great support and friend to him from the beginning and Dan admired him a lot and ... over the few years they'd grown closer Dan noticed the little things about him. Things that made butterflies fly in his tummy.

He removed the led and unlocked the door, walking in and shoving his rucksack full of revision papers on his desk. He looked round the door to see Phil sitting in the living room, sipping on a glass of water and nibbling on pieces of dry cereal. Dan smiled at the image but closed his door, switching the light on.

He returned to his desk and felt under his bottom desk drawer and flicking a switch. After the click was clear Dan carefully opened the drawer and removed the false bottom, taking out a black notebook with the words 'Death Note' in bold white writing scrawled across the top. Dan had made it as secure as possible ... lets say if someone found out about it ...

It wouldn't be good.

Dan turned on his iPhone and looked through the news and other sites and looking at recent crimes. Once he had gotten a good list he started scribbling names down into the notebook, putting dates, times and places. He had been pondering all day and he wanted to test his theory out quickly because it could benefit him loads. After writing down the criminal's names he smirked then carefully placed the black note book in the drawer and put the false bottom on top.

"I have to hand it to you Dan, you don't mess around." Ryuk's gravelly voice commented.

"I have to keep the Death Note hidden Ryuk, if some one found it then things would get really bad." Dan spoke quietly, wary of Phil only next door.

"Why do you have to press that button under your desk?" Ryuk asked curiously.

Dan smirked, happy with his invention. "The button disables the system I have fixed into the drawer. If the button is not pressed and someone opens the drawer then it will set of a lighter which will burn the Death Note. I can't risk anyone ever finding it, no one must ever find out." Dan spoke coolly and closed the drawer, hearing the click as everything he set up fit back into place.

Ryuk cackled, his raspy laughs filling the room. "Well I'll tell you this, you sure are an interesting person Dan." Dan ignored the comment. Ryuk and him weren't friends. The shinigami was just there to watch and he had explained many times that he wasn't on Dan's side, he was just bored and staying for the drama.

Dan grabbed the piece of led and switched the light off. He locked the door and quickly put the bit of led in the hinges of the door.

"I think you're too paranoid Dan." Ryuk chuckled as he watched Dan make sure there was no way any one could get in without him finding out. Dan didn't answer him and walked into the living room.

"Ready to go?" He asked Phil.

Phil turned to him and grinned. "Of course."

Both boys settled in a warm booth, cradling hot coffees to warm their cold fingers. It was raining outside and the droplets of water raced down the windows until they collected at the sill. There was a soft murmur from the small TV in the top right corner of the cafe and because of the rain the room was fairly packed.

Dan looked at Phil. He looked a little paler than usual because he was cold. His icy skin contrasted drastically against his dark fringe. His bright blue eyes shone brightly in the dim light and his cheeks were slightly rosy. Dan thought he looked beautiful. He sighed.

"Are you okay Dan?" Phil asked.

Dan looked up in surprise to see Phil's blue eyes looking at him intensely. Dan almost gasped at how beautiful it was to just stare into the orbs. He wanted to stay there forever but he knew he was making Phil uncomfortable.

"I'm fine." Dan smiled, "so what have you been up to lately?" Dan asked curiously. Phil's face didn't change but Dan caught a slight flicker in his left eyelid, Dan was very observant and could tell even with little expression Phil didn't want to tell him.

"Oh nothing much. How about you and you're studies, I'm sure you're busy with those?" Phil asked calmly, quickly diverting the topic. It made Dan a little suspicious but he decided not to pry since Phi was aloud to have privacy.

"Yeah, got an test tomorrow so I'll hit the books as soon as I get back." Dan replied, taking a sip of his coffee.

TV ~ "We have another heart attack up in Trafalgar square, Josh Hamilton, charged with sexual assault and drug smuggling died today at 2.35pm-"

Dan's lips twitched but he didn't say or do anything.

"What are your thoughts on Kira?" Phil suddenly asked.

Dan nearly spat his drink out. During all the time they spent together they had never brought up the subject. The Kira case had started a month prior, some person was killing criminals across the country and in other parts of the world - the main death being heart attacks. It's not like he never expected it to come up, Phil was a curious person and surely he was just trying to start a conversation.

Dan collected his thoughts then shrugged. "I don't know, they're killing criminals right? I suppose I don't really have to worry about them killing me. I've got some exams coming up and I need to study, I think I'll bother with my own life first. I'm not too opinionated on the subject." Dan explained coolly. Phil gave him a look of surprise, as if he expected an opinion, Dan would usually give an opinion in other conversations.

"Interesting observation ... I however don't think it's right." He continued. Dan tensed up. "I think it's wrong ... these criminals have done wrong but they need a chance to redeem themselves. The death penalty has been removed from different countries for a reason. People who have done wrong need to be punished so I think years of being in prison is a suitable sentence. Some of them can redeem themselves, I just don't think Kira has the right to decide who dies and who lives." Phil finished.

Dan felt his blood run cold. For the first time since he opened the note book he felt shame, he thought he was doing the world a favour, he was ridding the world of evil. How did Phil not see that? He was creating a world crime-free, he would make it a better place, couldn't Phil see that he was trying to help? Dan shook these thoughts away ... he still strongly believed in what he was doing. He'd convince Phil one day. Because ...

Dan was Kira.
