"Let go of that remote, Mello" one of the officers said in the middle of the chaos, the boy didn't have time to think, everyone pointed their guns at him and he pressed the button, making the whole building explode

The loud sound of an explosion was heard inside the red car, even with the music on full blast, Matt heard, he felt intrigued, where was it? It sounded really near, the boy spotted smoke a couple of miles away, he drove there to see what had just happened

As he got closer to his destination, everything looked way too familiar, but why? Matt didn't understand until he got there, he knew that building, he'd been there a few times with Mello and the other mafia dudes... were they in there when it exploded? Was Mello in there?

He stayed in the car as he saw a few police officers running outside carrying a body, once they were all gone, he walked out of the car and ran inside, his heart sped up as he saw dead members of the mafia on the floor, none of them seemed to have died because of the explosion, could it have been Kira?

He kept walking, afraid that the floor would give in to the weight any second, it certainly looked like it would. He tried to stop thinking about it and focus on finding Mello

After looking for a while, he got to the computer room, the ceiling was all over the floor, as if the main explosion had been there, the walls had fallen down as well, but that wasn't what made him gasp

There was someone laying unconscious on the floor, between all the ruins, Matt's heart sank "Mello?" He said shakily walking towards the body and held the boy close, he was alive, Matt was alive, Matt knew that, but his heart still broke "I'm so sorry... I should've been here, I shouldn't have left you alone..." he cried. He stayed like that for a while until Mello's eyes fluttered open "thank God... shit, I- I'm so glad you're alive" Matt said feeling mixed emotions, he was sad to see Mello like this, but he was extremely happy that he was alive

"Did they get the note?" Mello asked, Matt frowned "oh... for how long have been here? Did you get hurt? Fuck, I'm sorry" he rushed to say, realizing they were in a building that had just exploded 

Matt smiled down at him "don't worry, I've been here for about an hour, I was a couple of miles away when I heard the explosion and came as fast as I could" he explained

Mello smiled, he knew Matt cared about him, he had always known, even at Wammy's House, when Near was better than him in everything... he was never alone

*Wammy's House*

"You know what? Let Near be L's successor, I'm leaving" Mello said walking out of Roger's office and heading to his dorm, slamming the door shut "FUCK!" He yelled throwing a book against the window, breaking it

The door opened and Matt walked inside "woah, I was going to ask how it went, but I don't want to end up like the window, by the way, you could've waited until spring at least... it's freezing" Mello sat on the bed and Matt sat in front of him, with his lehs crossed "What's wrong babe?" He asked concerned

Mello sighed "why am I always the second choice? I, for once, would like to be better than Near at something" he said, close to tears, Matt was shocked, no one had ever seen Mello cry before

"Well, I don't know about the others, but you're first and only choice to me" Matt smiled making Mello blush "and... leave your door unlocked tonight" Mello tilted his head to the side "I want you to do something I've been trying to do for a long time, but it's boring on my own" the blond boy nodded and Matt left

At night, Mello couldn't stop thinking about what Matt had said earlier that day. At the strike of midnight, the door slowly opened, revealing Matt and two handbags "you gotta pack all the stuff you need to live" he said opening Mello's closet

Mello was beyond confused at that moment "why? What are we doing?" He asked, not k nowing what Matt had planned "why are you carrying those bags?"

Matt smiled at the boy's innocence "we're leaving" he said excitedly

Mello blinked "wh- what? Why? I don't want to leave" Matt looked at him in disbelief "well, I do, but we can't leave like that" he argued

"Really? Why? Because Roger says so? C'mon, live a little, I'll be by your side through thick and thin, I promise" Matt said, Mello knew he was right, so he got up and packed everything to run away with Matt...

"Mello... I'll never leave you alone again, I promise you" Matt reassured as he had three years before, the blond boy smiled, remembering their conversations after they had run away "I have failed you when you needed me most, and I'm so sorry"

"Matt..." the blond boy cut him "don't be, I'm glad you weren't here or you'd be like me or worse" he said, making Matt smile, knowing they both loved each other the same
