To say you had a thing for Near was... An understatement. Not just any understatement, it was like saying 'it's only a scratch' when in fact, your whole hand was falling off. Yes, it had reached that kind of level. You worked for him and his task force, on the Kira investigation.
You see, you had known Near since Wammy's house days, yes, you went there too. You weren't exceptionally bright, or great at sport, or anything like that, but you were a brilliant strategist. You could work out what someone else would do, what you could do to counter it, every single possibility and every single thing that could go wrong and what you could do to avoid that, with a click of the fingers. It was crazy how you could do it so fast, you couldn't even keep up with your own thoughts and calculations, but strategies was the only thing you ever really stood out in. You used your ability to your advantage, and you always knew where Near was.
It was also an understatement to say you were a little weird, and slightly obsessive. You would follow him around Wammys, having worked out the perfect hiding spots, best places for a view point and anything else you could ever need for full stalker capabilities. When he took on the Kira case, Near had remembered your strategic capabilities and gotten in touch almost immediately. You, of course, leapt at the chance.
You didn't have to do too much, as your regular deduction skills were hardly great, but whenever a problem arose, you had a solution to it almost immediately, and you were yet to be proved wrong, so Near kept you around. It was the only reason you were there in the first place, but, for some reason you thought there might have been something else behind it.
You thought he might have possibly been going to admit his undying love for you. You were sure there was some kind of connection between the two of you now, despite the fact that you rarely got to see him, because he was always so busy, and keeping up with sleep on hectic case like this could be difficult for a brilliant sleuth like him. You did all the workings out, and in your mind, there was nothing that could go wrong, you were going to confess. But, in your delirious state, you didn't count that he may not love you back...
"Near!" You called, catching up to him in the hallway. "Hi, hi!" You repeated with a wide grin on your face, trying to mask what you were really feeling.
"Yes, (Y/N)?" He asked blankly. "Can you make this quick, I'm tired." You nodded but in reality, you had a whole speech prepared.
"Near, I have something really important to tell you. Ever since the Wammy days I've felt something different. It's this swelling feeling in my chest, and do you know who causes it? You, Near. This feeling is funny, and it's bubbly, but you make it, and I feel special. Do you know what his feeling is, Near? This feeling is l-"
"No." He cut off your gushing with one word which made you stop dead in your tracks.
"What?" You asked, your smile beginning to falter.
"I don't love you, (Y/N). I don't have time for love, I want nothing to do with it. This case is more important than you could ever dream of. I need people who can solve the puzzle." Tears freely ran down your cheeks as his words hit into you, blow after blow. And after the last sentence, you knew what was coming, you just kept up a the smile and let the tears fall.
"You can't solve the puzzle, can you, (Y/N)? So what does that make you?" His voice rings in his ears, along with the more delicate, younger voice that belonged to Near, echoing those same words from years ago, inside of your head.
"A loser..." You whisper.
"I've booked you a flight back to Wammys, tonight. Roger will be waiting at the airport when you arrive back in England." He says, giving you a look and turning, walking away.
"Bye, Near..." Your voice cracks as he walks away without so much as a second glance, but before he's entirely out of ear shot, you whisper; "But this isn't over..."
