The Girl I Know Too Well (Part 2)
It was silent for a minute...
You and L, staring down at the business card Sharon had left on the table.
Your eyes glanced at L, meeting his. Both of you, unsure of what to say at this moment.
After a moment, you picked it up and inspected it. L watched closely.
And after some time of inspecting, you finally kill the tension in the air by speaking.
"I don't think it'd be bad to visit her store."
L gave you a serious, cold look that sent a shiver down your spine.
"No."
"What? Why not?"
"You know exactly why not."
"Come on, Ryuzaki" you say to him. "How bad can it be?"
"You can fall right into her hands..." L folded his arms.
"Or, she could actually be a decent human being and nothing bad could happen?"
"I don't trust her, (Y/N)."
You sigh. It was clear that once L had made a point, there was no going back.
"Fine. Then how about I go and you can stay at taskforce?"
"You can't be serious."
"Ryuzaki, sometimes people do change for the better" You state.
"They realise their mistakes and want to become a better, stronger person. Perhaps Sharon has become that person. We should have more faith in humanity."
L's eye twitched slightly.
"Don't panic too much" you say, reaching for his hand to be reassuring to him.
"I'm a trained taskforce member so if anything were to go wrong, I can take care of it. Trust me. You do trust me right?"
You and L looked each other in the eyes.
It was silent for a second before L took a breath.
"Of course I trust you..."
"Good. I'll be sure to alert back to taskforce if I need any assistance-"
"I'll attach a wiretap to you, (Y/N)."
You froze for a second.
"I'm sorry? I don't think that's necessary-"
"I'll attach a wiretap to you so us back at taskforce can know and be alerted if you are in any danger. Then we can get a taskforce member to help you out of the situation if necessary. Is that understood, (Y/N)?"
You paused. This should've been obvious from the start. L dating you meant that he was even more wary of the world around him and the situations you could be thrown into. And he was going to much greater lengths to insure your safety as well as his own.
He was serious about all of this. He really wanted you to be safe.
"...Okay" You speak up.
"I understand why you want to do that. And that's fine with me."
"Thank you for understanding (Y/N)" L said with a small smile.
"How bad can it be?"
-Later-
'Is he serious right now?!'
L said that he'd only attach a wiretap to you, but you ended up leaving the taskforce with not one, but two wiretaps strapped to you. As well as a miniature camera that was all connected to the taskforce so they can trace your location if any danger is spotted.
'L said that there were two wiretaps in case one breaks or loses connection to the taskforce...But this is a bit much, isn't it? I mean, a camera?!'
You take a breath. It wasn't too much at all. This was just how L does things. He was just worried about your safety and the safety of other people after coming into contact with a past criminal.
Besides, everything was well hidden within your layers of clothes so it didn't seem odd in the slightest.
You made your way to Sharon's bookstore down the other end of the road and walked inside.
"Keep an eye out on all your surroundings, (Y/N)" L said, watching through the small camera.
Unfortunately, L's voice couldn't be heard through the wiretaps so you couldn't hear if he was talking to you or not. It was just you, and you alone.
It wasn't so bad, though. You were a member of the taskforce so you know how risky things could turn out to be. But you didn't expect this. Especially since you were just going out for fun.
You looked around for a second, taking in as much as you can.
Everything seemed...normal.
It looked just like your average bookstore. Nothing unusual in the slightest.
But that made it more nerve wracking. You've experienced many things in your career that look normal but turn out to be awful and ugly. Sharon was a perfect example.
You had to be careful and expect the unexpected...
"So glad you could make it!" You hear the voice of Sharon behind you, making you jump and turn to face her.
She was dressed in a work uniform that was a very different look from her usual outfit. Her whole body was covered and only her arms showed. She wasn't wearing any make-up or false nails at all.
Yep, definitely a different look for a girl like her. Everything was very different right now.
"Thanks for...having me" you nervously say, unsure of what else to say.
Sharon giggled.
"Feel free to have a look around and pick up anything you like. We have a huge range of stories, biographies, graphic novels, manga, you name it! Let me know if you need anything."
Sharon went to the counter to help customers with their purchases.
You looked at her for a second before taking a look around.
There was nothing out of the ordinary at all. You were starting to think she really had changed.
"Be on your guard (Y/N)" L said, back at taskforce. He sat there, biting his nails. "It could very easily be a trap. Try and buy something and see where things go..."
'What should I do? Perhaps I should look through each shelf and take everything in properly' you thought to yourself.
Sharon watched as you took in absolutely everything around you, observing.
Eventually, you picked up a manga and scanned it, flipping through the pages. Nothing unusual about it. Just an ordinary manga.
"Ooh! That's a great read! You'll love that!"
You jumped, hearing Sharon's voice from behind you again.
"You gotta stop scaring me like that..." You say, catching your breath.
"Sorry, it's just that manga is super good! Will probably get an anime adaptation soon! Will you be purchasing this?"
She was certainly very enthusiastic and persuasive for people to buy stuff.
"...Sure. Just this manga, please."
"Absolutely!"
Sharon led you back to the counter where you bought the manga.
You took one last glance at the bookshelves before leaving the shop.
"Nothing looked out of the ordinary from (Y/N)'s view..." L said, slowly eating a piece of cake and watching through the small camera.
You picked up your phone and called taskforce.
"Hello (Y/N)" L answered. "I observed your actions-"
"Literally nothing looked wrong with the place" you cut him off.
"That may be the case, but every time you enter that building, I would like you to have a wiretap and camera on you at all times."
"Is that really necessary though? Sharon is really good with the customers and finding recommendations for people. I really think she's changed for the better!"
You here L scowl on the other end of the phone.
"I don't trust her, (Y/N). I don't like her, either."
"I know" you sigh.
There really was no coming round to him.
"Tell you what? I'll keep visiting the bookstore and see if I can get closer to Sharon to catch her out if necessary."
You hear L take a bite from his cake in thought.
"As long as you have the wiretaps and camera on, I don't see why you shouldn't persue that idea. Just be on your guard and be careful" he said.
You nod.
"I will. I'll be sure to get back to you with anything I find."
"Good. I trust you'll do a good job. Remember to destroy this phone after I hang up. Goodbye."
And with that, L hung up.
You threw the phone to the ground and crush it with your foot. Good job you have almost 1000 more back at taskforce. That's one thing about dating L, he gives you many phones that you have to break so they can't be traced.
You sigh and make your way back to taskforce.
Your new mission was in action.
(A/N): Yes, I know I haven't written a story in literal months! I've been super busy with college but I'm on my summer holidays/summer vacation so I have lots of free time. I should be going back to more regular updates for the time being. So apologies for the lack of stories. I promise I'll keep working hard.
Thanks for being patient!
