Forever Forced
(A/N): Based on the idea I posted in my chat a while ago. This one is really long so I apologise that it's a little rushed near the end. Enjoy! :)
Days began to drop by like flies. Each one coming immediately after the other, it was hard to tell what day it was.
As a detective myself, it's very easy to lose track of these small things.
Especially during this new case that had suddenly appeared from the shadows.
An unknown murderer who is calling themselves Kira has risen from somewhere and started killing off criminals one by one.
No one knows anything about this Kira. All we know is that they exist and they're in the Kanto Region of Japan. But with such a huge population, it's gonna take a lot of time to even track down a suspect.
We eventually found two suspects, but it became difficult to get any evidence out of them.
But we decided to build a taskforce headquarters here in Japan to help us in our investigation of tracking down Kira and bringing them to justice.
But something tells me that even with this new taskforce building, nothing will change in our investigation and we won't move any further.
However, we can't afford to lose to Kira. Otherwise it's all over for the world.
I have to catch him. The world is counting on me.
"Ryuzaki? Are you in one of your deep thinking modes again?"
My eyes moved to the right and I could see from the corner of my eye the figure of (Y/N), a member of the taskforce headquarters, like the other men. She was standing by me, holding two cups of coffee in her hands, a small smile soon grew on her face.
"Not answering my question, huh?"
"I was just lost in thought."
"Yeah, I gathered. Here, you look like you could use one of these."
She placed a coffee cup down next to me. I stared at the coffee swirling around in the cup, then I glanced back over at (Y/N).
"Been kinda hectic lately, huh? Kira's been killing left, right and centre. I feel so bad for all the victim's. I also feel bad for you as your workload is piling up more and more" she said, taking sips of her coffee.
"I'm afraid it's almost impossible to predict any of these deaths" I began. "All we can do now is go with what we have."
"I suppose" (Y/N) sipped at her coffee again. "You ignored my second part though..."
I looked back down at my coffee and picked up a few sugar cubes from the small bowl next to me, dropping them into the cup.
"Um...I already put 5 sugars in the cup already. I think it's sweet enough, don't you?"
"I predicted that before taking a sip. I can tell by the smell of the coffee. It smells just a little bit stronger than how I normally have my coffee. So I used that info to determine that my coffee is not exactly the right type."
"You can tell that just by smelling it...? I mean, you certainly live up to your reputation" (Y/N) laughed.
"This is nothing compared to other tasks I've faced."
"Hey Ryuzaki? Why do you like to have so many sweets? Is it something that helps you concentrate or do you just have a sweet tooth?"
"Did you find anything about the Kitamura household, (Y/N)?" I asked.
"Oh...About that" (Y/N) put down her coffee and I glanced over at her.
"I found nothing out of the ordinary from the camera footage we received. They are simply a normal family. Most of the time, all they were doing was watching normal shows and movies on the television. Nothing suspicious about them at all. Aizawa can back me up on that one."
"I understand. Thank you for looking into that for us."
"You brushed over my question again though" (Y/N) laughed again.
"I see you are curious about my eating habits. Wait, let me guess! Is it because I've been eating lots of sweets and you wish to try some?"
"No, that's not the case..."
I offer (Y/N) a gummy sweet but she kindly refuses.
"Your loss."
(Y/N) just laughed.
I turned back to face my coffee cup and a small smile made its way to my lips.
It was interesting. I seemed to feel some kind of amusement when I am talking with (Y/N). It's a feeling that's different from what I receive from the others...
I glanced over at (Y/N) and went to say something to her to stir up another conversation but all of a sudden my laptop beeped and Watari's logo popped up on-screen.
"Ryuzaki! We have found more heart attack victims!"
(Y/N) almost spat out her coffee upon hearing that information and peered over my shoulder.
"The way they were all killed seems different from what we've seen from Kira before."
"What do you mean by different?" I asked him.
"I'll send you all the information I have, regarding these deaths."
"Okay, thank you."
"I better get back to Aizawa. He'll probably need my help again now" (Y/N) said, standing up.
"I'll come back later to check up on ya."
(Y/N) left almost in an instant...
Which was a shame.
I thought she would stick around a little bit longer.
I like talking with (Y/N).
"There appears to be quite a lot more information. Thank you Watari. I'll look into it right away. Report back to me if anything else occurs."
"Of course. Good luck."
And with that, Watari cut off.
I sigh and begin going through everything Watari sent through to me.
I realised that this was going to take a lot of time. Plus, I'd have to add this to all the other things I'm doing. I have to keep track of the work in front of me.
I hadn't slept in 2 days straight but my health isn't what's important. Saving people's lives is what really matters.
I began my work by first identifying the victims.
I matched victims to faces pretty quickly and moved on to focussing on their location and time of their deaths.
"Kira...What are you trying to do here?"
No, this was different. The victims aren't criminals, but instead police officers. Each of them had been killed in roughly around the same area.
I see why Watari thought these were different. I know for a fact that these police officers would never give out their real name to a stranger. So how has Kira gotten their names?
Is it possible that Kira's ways of killing have changed and he only needs a face to kill now?
It didn't seem realistic that that theory was correct. A method of killing like that, can't just possibly change in a strange way like that.
Plus, the officers were all killed outside a building, which means Kira probably saw them outside and planned to attack the moment they saw the officers.
But Kira only kills criminals as far as we are aware...
"No...Hold on..."
Before I knew it, I was starting to get a little stressed out.
I reached for a microphone that was attached to speakers in each room of the taskforce. Everyone needs to hear what I have to say.
I hold down the button on the microphone.
"I'd like to call a short meeting with each of you..." I speak into the microphone.
"I think I've found something that can be helpful to our investigation but I wish to discuss it in person. Please meet me in the main room."
(Y/N)'s Pov
I heard the sound of L's voice come through the speaker in our room.
I wonder what he had to talk about...
"We better hear what he has to say" Aizawa said standing up. "I bet it'll help us take a step closer to finding and arresting Kira."
"I hope so" I say, standing up as well. "L's got a whole lot of work these days so I hope this information he has will help push everything forward."
"What do you expect from the world's greatest detective? Of course he'll have lots of work. He's probably tackling another case as well as this one" Aizawa said, making his way out of the room.
"I just hope he remembers to rest today..."
All of us stop what we're doing and make our way to the main room to meet up with L and hear what information he has about the case.
"Sorry to call you to this meeting as you are all busy finding evidence and information on your own, but this is very important" L began.
"I have deducted that there is a fake Kira."
"A fake Kira?!" Matsuda gasped.
"No, that's not the right word" L said, stirring some coffee in his cup with a spoon. "We should think of them as more of a Second Kira."
"Another Kira has appeared? How can you be sure it's not the same one we are currently facing?" Mr Yagami stated.
"I'll explain it to you..." L states. "This Kira killed 3 police officers without knowing their names. The Kira we are currently facing needs both a name and a face to kill. We should also look into the fact that criminals were still dying during the time of these deaths. And all these criminals had their names and faces broadcasted on the news. Why would Kira need the news to get that information? Why hadn't he killed them before? Because there are two."
"That makes a lot of sense" I speak up, grabbing the bottom of my chin with my finger and thumb in deep thought.
"The Kira we've been going after all this time, relied on the news to get his information and victims. But from what you are saying, Ryuzaki, it appears that this other Kira didn't need any kind of information from any source in order to kill those three officers."
"That's exactly right, (Y/N). I came to the conclusion that he must've been watching those police officers and killed them before they had the chance to enter the building they are outside of. Meaning this other Kira is in that building or somewhere close by."
"That sounds...really bad" Matsuda said.
"With regards to that information, I want you to still go over the work you have, as if you are still going after the first Kira. I'll focus on coming up with a plan on how we can get to the second" L said.
"Are you sure you won't need any help?" I ask. "There are a lot more of us, compared to you. We can split up and all work to catch both!"
"No, I'll work on my own. Everyone can go back to work now. But be on your guard and if by any means you have to leave this building, be sure to make sure that your face isn't visible to strangers. Alright, you are free to go back to the work you have."
L spun around in his seat and began with his huge workload.
Everyone walked out of the room as L sat alone.
Alone...
He did look really lonely...
"Hey (Y/N)? Come on. Let's leave Ryuzaki alone to do what he needs to do" Mr Yagami spoke to me.
"Uh...Hold on. I'll be with you in a second."
"Oh, alright." Mr Yagami left and I was alone in the room with L.
"If there is something you wish to discuss with me, please cut to the chase."
"...You'll have more work now, won't you?"
"Why are you always so concerned about my workload? This is nothing new to me, (Y/N). If I don't have any work in front of me, nothing will get done."
"You haven't been taking any breaks though! Try not to push yourself too much. It's really not good for your health!" I state.
"And you really think that my health is of any value?" L turned to face me.
"What are you talking about?! Of course it does! You're a human being, just like the rest of us! Which means you should be taking care of your health. Be sure to take a break sometime, okay?"
"I'm afraid I can't do that" L said, stuffing some sweets into his mouth. "Not now, since we have confirmation that there is a Second Kira. Now, if you're done with your speech, I must get on with my workload. But thank you for your time, (Y/N)."
L turned back around and got straight into his workload.
"Are you sure you don't need my help?"
"No, now please, get back to your own work."
I sigh and turn around, heading out of the room.
L's Pov
I sigh and rest my head in my hand.
(Y/N) was right. The work I will have now has shot up high, now that we have another Kira on the loose.
How should I wrap my head around things? I was already stressed enough as it was. My head was killing me and I was very tired.
How can I even find a possible suspect for this new Kira?
Lot's more lives are going to be lost now. This is really tricky.
"Ryuzaki, have you looked into the victims I forwarded over to you?"
"Yes, Watari. I've had a look over them. This new Kira can kill with only a face now so be on your guard and keep a lookout for anything that can help us."
"There are a few new victims already. This new Kira you mentioned seems to be quite reckless. I will forward all the info to you."
"Oh, already? Interesting. Yes, just forward all the information through and I'll have a look at it whilst I look through the previous cases."
"Alright, I'm forwarding it to you now."
"Hmm..."
More victims already? What is this Kira thinking? The previous Kira didn't kill one after the other but instead gave time for the police to begin an investigation before making another kill.
I'll have to start from identifying victims again.
My desk was covered in paper files and the computer in front of me had files open everywhere.
It was going to be another long day.
"I'm going to need another strong, black coffee Watari" I say.
"Of course. I'll get one ready for you and bring it through right away."
Watari cut himself off and I was stuck alone in this room once again.
Alone...
No one to talk to...
Those are memories I didn't want to remember. But I knew them too well.
Things weren't always like that. I used to be a happy child with big goals in mind.
But all of us grow out of that and become adults. We just have to go with what's in front of us, with no time to think about the dreams we had as children.
We study, even though we have no interest in academics.
Our dreams are devoured.
Sometimes we even have to lie to protect ourselves. But lying can be a real nuisance.
I noticed how dark the room had gotten. The sun must been going down.
The others will probably have fallen asleep on the job.
I can't remember the last time I did something like that...
"Your coffee, Ryuzaki" I heard the voice of Watari behind me. I turn around to greet him and he places my cup of coffee on my desk.
"Oh thank you Watari" I say.
"The day has gone by pretty quickly. Look at how dark the sky has gotten. I noticed a few of the others had fallen asleep on the job."
"It's only to be expected of them. They are normal human beings after all" I say, dropping more sugar cubes into the coffee Watari gave me.
"I'll leave you to concentrate on your work and I will keep you updated with anything else I find regarding the Kira case" Watari said before leaving.
"Yes, please do."
I sigh once again and go back to my work.
Work really was getting a lot harder these days. This case is one of the hardest I've ever faced in my whole time of being a detective...
I hate it. I really hate it. I hate Kira.
Later
(Y/N)'s Pov
I must have fallen asleep during my work as I had just relaxed. I wasn't doing anything.
Well, not until I heard a voice screaming which made my shoot up and snap back into reality.
I glance over at Aizawa who was working beside me.
He had fallen asleep also but didn't appear to have been startled by the scream.
I certainly was, though and it came from the main room, where L was.
I slowly dragged myself up and scooted out to the main room.
"Uh...L?"
I gasp as I see a broken cup on the floor and what looked like coffee had spilled everywhere.
"Ryuzaki! Are you alright?!" I rush over to help.
"It's alright. I thought I had a good grip on the cup, but I dropped it and spilled it over myself and the floor. My fingers are awfully stiff today."
"Hold on, I'll clean up the mess!" I rushed up the stairs onto my floor. I dashed to the kitchen and ran back out with a dustpan, brush and a wet cloth.
"Coming through, coming through!"
"There's no need to panic like that (Y/N). I'm fine."
I brush up the broken glass with the dustpan and brush before cleaning up the spilled coffee with the wet cloth.
"You have to be more careful. That could've been a very serious accident" I state.
"I'm sorry..."
"It's alright. As long as you're not hurt." I stand up and go over to him.
"What are you doing (Y/N)?"
"You spilled some coffee on your shirt, so I'll put a wet cloth on it. You could've burnt yourself."
Suddenly, L grabbed my wrist.
"Don't do that. I'll do it myself."
"We need to get you some clean-"
I cut myself off midsentence as I looked L in the eyes.
"L...Your eyes are really red. Have you been crying...?"
"Probably lack of sleep. I'm fine. You should go to sleep (Y/N). Thank you for helping."
"Why do you always brush over my questions? Everytime I ask you a question, you just brush over, like you're just disregarding me."
"I'm not disregarding you. I gave you an answer" L said, stacking sugar cubes, one on top of another.
"Not the right one."
He stopped.
"Why won't you just tell me the truth? Talk to me L. I'm here to help."
"...No, it doesn't matter..."
"What doesn't matter?"
I began to get really worried as I noticed L's leg started to fiercely shake.
"Hey, hey, calm down. It's alright. What's wrong?" I approach him and put an arm around him.
"My health doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. My health doesn't matter..."
He was starting to freak out. He was taking short breaths. This wasn't good. I didn't know what to do in a situation like this.
I was scared of doing anything in case I startled him even more. But my body seemed to react on it's own and I grabbed onto L, pulling him into hug. A hug that was tight enough for him to realise that I wasn't going anywhere, but also being reassuring enough so it was comforting for him.
He was shaking. I had no idea what was going on inside his head...
I felt his arms slowly wrap around me and he hugged me back, but his hug was weak, like all his energy had just been drained out of him.
"It's okay. Everything is okay. I'm here for you. You can tell me everything when you're ready. Just deep breaths. Deep breaths."
L tried his best to pace his breathing. I did my best to help him.
"Smell the flowers, blow out the candles, as I like to say" I giggle.
L laughed a little bit and his breathing began to slow down a little bit.
"There, there. That's it" I say, stroking his hair.
"You...really care for me, don't you, (Y/N)?"
He was crying. I could clearly hear the break in his voice.
"I wouldn't be hugging you if I didn't, L. I really care for you."
"I think I can trust you, (Y/N). You're always worried about me."
"Of course I am."
L broke the hug and sat up.
"I don't think I can do this anymore..."
"Do what?"
"I don't think I can be a detective anymore..."
My eyes widened a little but at the same time, I didn't feel overly surprised by that statement.
After all, his health had seemed to get even worse as each case passed by. This one was definitely the worst though.
"I think you have every right to think something like that" I say.
"Really?"
"Yes. L, you look awful. Look at what your work has done to you. It's really badly affected your mental health."
"My health isn't supposed to matter..."
"Well, it does to me. Because I care about every single part of you!"
L turned his head away, a small blush appearing on his face.
"You shouldn't say things like that" he said. "That's risky."
"It's not risky when it's the truth. I'll shout it from the rooftops if I could."
"That wouldn't be necessary..." L got more flustered.
"Okay, sorry. I should focus on the matter at hand. Tell me as much as you want on the situation you're in."
"I never really wanted a life like this, (Y/N)...I wanted to be normal too."
"But you are normal-"
"No, I'm not. Hiding myself from literally everyone isn't normal, (Y/N). Working all day everyday to the point I don't sleep at night, isn't normal. This isn't what I want anymore..."
"Why didn't you say anything before?"
"Because I couldn't. My job is to save others. What I want doesn't matter. No one cares how I feel. And it should stay that way."
"Are you even hearing yourself right now?!" I put both my hands on his face.
"I care! What you want to do matters to me! You can't just let something you don't want, eat away at you and your dreams. You have to live for what you want! What you're passionate about! Who cares what others think! It's your life! So you live it how you want to!"
L looked into my eyes. Fear seemed to hide behind them.
"I wish I could think like that. But it's impossible. I can't just quit right here and now. Think of how many lives that will be lost if I were to just stop now..."
"You're L, aren't you? Isn't there anyone that wants to take your place...?" I ask him.
"Huh...? Someone to take my place...?"
"I'm sure there are people who want to be in this position" I say.
"..."
He thought for a moment. He looked a little uncertain though.
"I have an idea. Let's see if it works" L said, turning to his laptop.
"God, I'm nervous."
"It'll be alright, Ryuzaki. This is for your sake and to follow the path you really want."
Later...
"So, one of your successors will take your place?"
"I hate to suddenly put all the work on Near, but I had no choice. He is the best to success me. He shows no emotion so the likelihood of him feeling the way I do at any point, is very unlikely" L said.
"He also said he was more than happy to take on my role as him and the others have been working hard for that chance. He knows how to get things done."
"Well, as long as he's okay with it, then I think that's good then. Both of you will be happy."
"Thank you (Y/N). Really. Thank you for helping me take that step. I wouldn't have had the confidence otherwise."
"I'm glad I can help you. Now we should tell the taskforce the change in scenery."
"No!" L snapped, grabbing my arm.
"The taskforce must never find out that I quit in the middle of the case! Who knows what'll happen if word gets out. Please, just keep this between the two of us..."
"Alright then. If you're sure."
"Thank you (Y/N)."
"You still haven't told me what career path you really want to go down. What is it that you really wanna do?"
L smiled at me.
"That reminds me, I'd like to ask you to join me in starting a new coffee business" he held out his hand to me.
"Coffee business?" I shouldn't have been so surprised. L's seen drinking coffee a lot.
"So your dream is to open up a coffee shop?"
"Is there something wrong with that?"
"Not at all! I think it suits you! You're always talking about coffee and drinking it, so I think it's a great idea!"
"I'm glad you think so. I could use the money I've earned over the years as a detective to have one built. So, would you like to join me, (Y/N)?"
Agreeing to join L would mean I'd lose my job at the taskforce.
But I can see L right in front of me. And he looks so much more relaxed. He looks so calm and he's smiling. Like he's forgotten how to smile all this time.
This is the true L. This is how L really feels.
And I loved being able to bring out that side to him. I love talking with L and finding out more about him.
"I'd love to work with you" I smile and take L's hand.
~
And so L's coffee business opened up.
I worked along side him so I had quit my job at the taskforce.
Speaking of which, the taskforce don't know about the coffee business as of yet.
I told them that I had to quit due to very personal reasons at home and they didn't overlook it.
But no one knows why L left and I certainly hope they never find out.
I did enjoy working at the taskforce and making friends with everyone, but like L said, it was very stressful and I've had a lot of sleepless nights working there.
Here, things are a lot more peaceful, less stressful and a lot more fun. L's really passionate about coffee and as we work, he's always telling me about coffee and how different types of coffee are made to help me as we make different drinks.
He seems a lot more relaxed and genuinely happy.
I really like that.
He's been getting a lot more sleep these days as well. Sometimes he'd stay awake through the night for no real reason. But I guess it was due to the fact he was so used to pulling all nighters.
"Thank you very much! Come back soon!" I wave to the last customer of the day as they take their drinks and leave.
"We were a lot more busy today than yesterday" I say.
"Yeah" L stretched. "But good work today, (Y/N). You did well."
"Thank you. You did as well!"
L smiled and looked around the shop he owned.
"I can't believe my dream really came true. I never thought I'd have the courage to change" he said.
"Well, you did. And I definitely think it's for the better."
"I still feel bad for putting all that work on Near, so suddenly."
"I bet he really wanted it though. I'm sure Near wouldn't mind. You said he shows no emotion right? He probably just took the work and got it done."
"Yeah..."
I smile and pat him on the back.
"I can't thank you enough for all of your help (Y/N). I wouldn't have done anything if you weren't with me."
"Hey, that's just what I'm here for!" I smile at him.
All of a sudden, L took a hold of my hands, making me blush then leant to me and kissed my cheek.
I blush hard and put a hand to my cheek.
L's face went bright red a second after and he covered his mouth.
"Sorry! Sorry! I got caught up in the moment..." He turned his head away.
I laugh and kiss him on the cheek as well.
"Now we're even!"
The two of us stared at each other with red faces. All of a sudden, the door to our shop opened and I heard the little bell ring.
"Sorry, we're closed for the day" I say. "I forgot to put the sign up-"
"Ryuzaki? (Y/N)?"
"M-Matsuda? Misa?"
Well shit.
(A/N): I'm thinking of making a part 2
