Chapter 1

Since Naomi Misora's disappearance, L was sure that Kira was one of the people that were followed by Raye Penber. Also, Ukita was right: it was completely useless to hope to find her again. Kira had killed her. End of story.

-Watari. Set the cameras on the TV screens.-

Watari obeyed and three camera footages appeared on the three screens. Soichiro was the only one with them. For a question of privacy, all of the other members were ordered to stay out of the room for the moment.

-Does my son have something to hide?-

-Not to worry, mister Yagami, he's just a teen. I used to be like that when I was his age.-

"And I turned Watari completely crazy..."

Thought L, but he preferred not to say it out loud.

Vera stopped studying before the dinner was even ready. She just wasn't focused enough... After her father's funeral, she was finding it harder and harder to study, and that made her mother mad.

-Is that the TV I hear?-

-Yeah...-

Ryuga Hideki was spouting out some love words under the rain. Why was it that everyone found him attractive? He may had been cute, but he sucked at acting.

"Directors hire him because he's a big shot..."

-What about studying, Vera?-

-Done.-

-Already?-

"Does she not care how I feel? My dad died four months ago and all she can think about is my studies..."

-Don't bug me...-

Tsukiko was worried for her daughter. She wasn't smiling as much as she used to. Of course, she missed her dad, as she did herself. Tsukiko knew that her Vera had always dreamed about being a police officer and she was worried that, with that attitude, she might have not made it into University.

-Watari. Tell the TV to send the message now.-

Sayu Yagami, who was watching the TV in that moment, read it out:

-The members of the G8 have decided to send in Japan 1500 agents from all over the world!-

Light looked at the TV, smirking. He was sure L had put cameras all around the house, not just his room, so he mantained a steady face and said, in a calm tone:

-I don't think they did. After the death of those twelve FBI agents, it's pretty obvious that Kira can kill them whenever he wants. And why did they tell it on TV? To warn him? I think it's probably just fake news to put pressure on him. And if I noticed that, I'm sure Kira will-

"Do you really think I'll be intimidated by that? Oh, L... You still don't know who you're dealing with."

Thought Light before eating a piece of his dinner.

-Your son is really smart...-

-I guess so, he was first on the national tests...-

-But wait a minute... What is happening on the other side?-

Soichiro looked at L, confused, as he pointed the third screen.

-The nations from the G8 sent in...-

"1500 agents after hearing what Kira had done..."

She read the rest of the message in her head. She was eating on the sofa, while her mother was sitting in the kitchen drinking whine.

-Heard that, mum?-

-Heard what?-

-I think this is fake... They would have never risked sending that many agents into Japan knowing what happened to dad...-

-You think so?-

And she drank another glass. Tsukiko had started drinking alcohol the night Jeremy died and it was slowly becoming an addiction. Vera had tried to make her stop, but she couldn't control her mum and study for her exams at the same time. So she had given up, just making sure she wouldn't have driven when drunk.

-Unless... They really did send in agents from around the world. I mean... What Kira did was pretty upsetting, from the point of view of the international police, at least... But...-

-Those bastards would never help us! They're way too busy taking care of their economy... Did you know Italy is slowly getting into a crysis? And so is Greece? They would never care about Japan right now...-

Vera turned around to look at her mother, without getting up:

-What are you talking about, mum? We're talking about Kira! Of course they would! And stop drinking that, it's making you go dumb...-

-You take that back, young lady...-

Yelled Tsukiko before yawning and pouring another glass.

"Yeah. She's definetely drunk..."

-Still... 1500 is a large number... Maybe they did send some, but like, 20 or 12 again...-

-And... hic... why would they... lie?-

Vera looked at the screen, thinking. Ryuga was now writing a letter to his faraway love.

-To put pressure on Kira...-

She got up.

-Not knowing how many there are, everyone will look like an enemy to them.-

L was eating a vanilla pudding while thinking:

"Light Yagami sure is smart, but Vera isn't bad herself. Sure she had to overthink it to figure it out and it took her more time, but she figured it out nonetheless. Kitamura's family was not even suspicious... I'll say... Vera and Light are my suspects for now. One of them... Is Kira."

-Come again?-

-I want to put pressure on Kira... So I have intention to go and introduce myself.-

-Ryuzaki, this is crazy! And dangerous!-

Said Mitsuru, clearly worried.

-I know it is, but trust me, Mitsuru: it is the only way to catch him.-

-Him? You mean to tell me my son is still a suspect?-

-Of course.-

Soichiro didn't reply, but he was clearly offended. After the footage, Light should've been off of the suspects list, and yet...

-But the suspects are three and I am only one, so... Mister Mogi. You're gonna have to introduce yourself as L to Kitamura's daughter.-

Mogi was hesitant, buf then he nodded.

-Ok.-

-I'll go and introduce to Light Yagami and I want you, mister Matsuda, to go and introduce to Vera.-

-Ryuzaki: are you sure abot that?-

Asked Himari, rather skeptical.

-Sure. Somehow I have the felling he'll be the perfect fit for the job...-

-No, not that... If you're sending substitutes, why not send three and you stay here? Mitsuru could go.-

-I could?-

-I appreciate the effort, but I want to go myself. Light Yagami is the first one who figured out our trick... He's the one that... How do you say it? Sticks up the most...-

The rest of the Task Force was still very unsure about that plan, but since L was the one in comand, they just had to stick with it.

-Ryuzaki.-

Watari came in with the newspapers.

-I don't know if this is relevant or not, but...-

L took the paper and read it in his head. His expression slowly mutated to worried.

-What is it?-

-What about Reikko Tsukiko?-

-What about her?-

Asked Aizawa, nervously.

-She was one of your colleagues, wasn't she?-

All of the Task Force nodded.

-And she abandoned this case alongside other policemen...-

-Yes, but what about her?-

-She has been found dead yesterday.-

The room filled with gasps of terror.

-Tsukiko... Died?-

-Apparently, she was drunk. And she was driving. She did have an alcohol problem, as we saw from the footage...-

-Ryuzaki! Just tell us what happened!-

Yelled Ukita with impatience. L looked at all of the people in the room before reading:

-Tsukiko Reikko was on duty yesterday night with one of her colleagues Gaito Watanabe. They were on break and went in a restaurant and both got drunk. Then they apparently witnessed a pickpocketing and insisted on following the thief, but while drunk, they crashed on a sidewalk, luckily leaving no victims aside from themselves.-

-This is horrifying...-

-But that poor Vera... Now she is an orphan for real!-

Added Matsuda. L started thinking again while the others were conversing: Vera was the daughter of two respected police officers, an American agent and a Japanese policewoman. She must've noticed from the behaviour of her dad or by simply observing that an FBI agent was folowing her. With little alternatives, she could have decided to kill every agent in Japan, including her father. If she was really Kira, she probably wouldn't have cared about him. Obtening information from the police mustn't had been hard, considering both of her parents were in the police and her mother had a drinking problem. Then, when the moment was clever, so when the cameras were removed, she decided to kill her mum too, scared that her alcohol problem might somehow make her a threat. Sure, the police said she was drunk, but what if she had an heart attack while driving and the car went off the road? Or maybe her mum's death was nothing but an infortunate set of circumstances? But if it wasn't the case, Vera was a truly dangerous being...

-...aki... RYUZAKI!-

-Mh, yes?-

-We've been literally calling you for ten minutes now!-

Said Himari.

-I know, sorry about that. I was just planning... Mister Matsuda: can I count that you'll have a gun on you?-

Other gasps filled the room.

-But, Ryuzaki... Why? Isn't it a little extreme? She's... Just a teenager...-

-Just a teenager that could be Kira, remember?-

Said Soichiro.

-Mogi, Ryuzaki: you should bring a gun too!-

-That won't be necessary, mister Yagami, only Matsuda will have to bring it. Plus, I don't like bringing guns with me: they're distracting.-

"Plus if Vera really is this cruel, how would she react if someone told her that they're L? Still, maybe the death of her parents really was a coincidence... The most suspect of all is Light. But he's also the smartest... So while those two just warn Reikko and Kitamura's daughters that they're me, I'll also ask Light to come and join the Task Force without telling mister Yagami. To conclude, Yagami is a suspect with a 90% chance of being Kira, Vera 60% and Kitamura's daughter only 10%... But until none of them is at 100%, I don't think I can exclude anyone from the list..."
