(9) And All Death Breaks Loose
Finley might be a dick but he's SO hot. That's him on the side btw, your welcome (:
Cayson jogged around the base extremely annoyed. He hadn’t ever been a fan of running, but Mason had added this to his training.
Apparently, Mason hadn’t been impressed that Cayson had outrun at least four dangerous men with arrows while carrying an injured Emery.
Cayson’s gym teacher who stated he would never amount to anything due to the fact that he walked the mile every time he had to do it could suck it; Cayson was awesome. He spotted Finley a little bit ahead of him, staring at him as if he was waiting.
When Cayson neared him, Finley moved into his path so Cayson had no choice but to stop.
“What do you want?” Cayson questioned, sighing in annoyance.
“Just seeing how you're doing. Coming in last place is a bitch,” Finley grinned.
“The games not over yet,” Cayson smirked.
“Oh, so Emery’s only a game?”
“You know what I meant,” Cayson sneered.
“You don’t intimidate me,” Finley blurted, leaping a step forward so the two were face to face.
“Small words from a small mind.”
“Is that the best you got? Insults you probably don’t even understand yourself.”
“Keep talking, one day you might say something smart,” Finley opened his mouth to reply but instead kept it shut as a hand was set on Cayson’s chest, forcing him to step back.
“Aren’t you supposed to be running?” Sean wondered, turning his attention to Finley.
“He just stopped and started an argument over a game,” Finley lied, hands up in defense. “I guess some people just can’t handle coming in last.” Cayson shuffled forward, ready to send his fist into Finley’s face, when Sean held him back. He sent Cayson a cold smile before strolling off.
“Remember Ezra’s rules, no fighting,” Sean chipped in a minute later.
“How about you turn your back long enough for me to punch him in the nose,” Cayson suggested as Sean threw his arm to his side.
“Cayson-”
“Come on,” Cayson frowned, “just one punch. Just enough to make him bleed or . . . or oo! Break his nose,” he found an odd smile on his lips.
“Can we go get lunch?” Zane whined as he walked over, stressed from his recent conversation with Everly. He hadn’t loved the idea of her working in the infirmary. Zane felt as if it was his job to protect her.
He eyed Cayson for a moment before glancing over his shoulder, searching for the only person who knew how to piss him off this much; Finley.
“Let’s,” Sean bobbed his head.
“I feel like a bunch of teenage girls,” Zane began, changing the topic of the conversation. “But as I made my way here I overheard your best friend explaining to a certain woman that you attacked him with your lame insults and he got you back with some wise ones like “small words from a small mouth” or something like that.”
“I said that!” Cayson sneered. “Come on! He didn’t even wait five minutes!” He sighed. “Let’s all just do what I do . . . pretend Finley doesn’t even exist.”
“Well that’s very mature of you,” Sean teased.
“Why is everyone messing with me?”
“So Zane, have you found what you want to do yet?” Sean questioned before Cayson could get an answer.
“Yeah Zane, you sure mock me enough about joining security. What are you doing?” Zane causally laughed, opening his mouth to reply. Instead of words, a woman's blood curdling scream echoed through the air.
Everyone froze, Cayson’s heart stopping, as the shrieks continued. Cayson whirled around, attempting to find the source of the sound. When he felt he had pinpointed it, he took off running.
The boy’s followed after him, nervous as to what they might find. Cayson came to a halt, stopping in front of the cafeteria. Taking in a deep breath, he waited for the person to yell again.
When they did, Cayson charged behind the cafeteria.
The first he saw was Roxanne. She was shaking in terror, standing over something as she screamed again. The second thing he noticed was the body that rested at her feet.
Sean and Zane caught up, crashing into Cayson as they surveyed the scene.
“Oh god,” Sean exclaimed, circling around Cayson to see the body. However, he didn’t get to close. His expression dropped, as did the shade of his face. He was extremely pale. “I’ll go get Ezra.” With that, Sean disappeared. Cayson avoided the body, heading straight to Roxanne.
“I didn’t do it! I didn’t do it!” She cried.
“It’s okay,” he attempted comfort, throwing an arm around her. The strain of the situation overcame Roxanne, causing her to sob uncontrollably. She latched onto a chunk of his t shirt, soaking it with her tears.
“Oh god,” Zane gasped as he stared at the face of the person lying on the ground.
“Who is it?” Cayson whispered, rubbing Roxanne’s back in attempt to comfort her.
“Mike,” Cayson was blown away. Mike had been the person who found Cayson and his friends along with Sean. How had he died? Why was his body in the camp? What was going on? Were they in danger?
A hundred thoughts ran through Cayson’s mind. However, one dominated over the others.
What would Ezra do when he found Cayson standing by a dead body?
Just as Cayson feared, Ezra did not respond well.
