Chapter IX

"So...tired. Can't...keep..running...like this" thought Candice to herself as she, Jack, Rebecca, and Stacy emerged from hiding underneath several abandoned cars. The cluster of buildings and half of the orange sun glared at them as they left the highway behind them. As they stepped deeper into the city, the sun light grew weaker and weaker.

"Damn," said Jack as he saw the sun slowly dip into the horizon. "At this pace, we'll reach the stadium by nightfall." While hiding behind a crashed bus, they kept out of sight of the several infected men in military uniform wandering affront of them. Just then the static of a radio could be heard.

Jack peeked from his hiding spot and looked for the source of the radio. He got out his M9 and aimed at the closest infected. His throat has been torn out and a giant bite gabbed from his cheek. Blood covered his uniform as Jack fired off a round hitting the man in his undamaged cheek. He and his three comrades turned to Jack who fired a second shot.

It hit the first infected soldier in the eye, where his head twitched back before he fell to the ground with a loud thud. Then Jack fired a third round hitting the second infected, a man with his left eye torn out and his teeth glaring out as it and its comrades hissed at Jack; hitting him in the lower jaw. Bits of teeth flew in all directions as a hole became exposed in its lower jaw. The remaining three now start approaching Jack as he fired off a fourth round hitting the second infected in the forehead. A fifth infected trotted out of a nearby alley, a man wearing a torn GIP shirt with his insides torn out, and stepped over the first fallen infected.

Jack fired a fifth round hitting a third infected soldier next to the nose. His head twitched back as he stepped back a few steps before letting out a gurgling moan and again began approaching Jack as he fires off a sixth round hitting the fourth infected soldier in the forehead. As it fell he fired a seventh round striking the infected man between the eyes. The last infected is now only ten feet away as Jack fired off an eighth round, hitting the infected soldier in the neck as the barrel of Jack's pistol retracted and stayed retracted. The infected fell to the ground but before it could get up it got the butt of the pistol smashed against its forehead.

While wiping away the infected blood he signaled the three women it's safe he began searching the infected as the radio static could be heard again. He retrieved a radio from the back pouch of the fallen infected with the bullet hole in its lower jaw. While turning a knob that keeps changing the radio static, Candice searched the fallen infected for any supplies. She found five full magazines for the M9, a second M9, and a long knife. As he turned the knob several more times a male voice came from the radio.

"...and safety from the demons outside. If you are listening to this and are looking for a safe haven, come to the Saint Bernard over at the Domino Avenue. This message will repeat. To anyone listening and seeking shelter, come to the Saint Bernard. We offer lots of food, water and safety from the demons outside. If..."

"The old Saint Bernard? Isn't it by the BPD Police Station?" asked Candice as she handed Jack several clips and reloaded her new pistol.

"It is. By the looks of it the church is closer than the stadium but I have my doubts"

"Why?" muttered Rebecca.

"Well first the message is prerecorded meaning it's been broadcasting for a long period of time leaving a lot questions like is the church still safe or has it been overrun?" answered Jack as they slowly walked away from the fallen infected.

"The least we can do is try. The church lies in our path and if it is not safe we'll head to the stadium" said Candice as they turned to a street where the smell of burnt flesh lies in the air. Using their garments to shield their nose and mouth from the foul smell, they slowly passed a street covered in litter, torn clothing, and abandoned vehicles.

An entire city block lies in smoldering rubble, the nose of a plane sticking out. Smoke still rose from the wreckage. The tearing of flesh and the consumption of it could be heard as the four approached several infected kneeling over a man dressed completely in black, and began tearing apart his back.

The two sisters and Candice, gagged as they watched bits of flesh being torn out and chewed apart by an infected woman. Their chewing muffled the gagging sound and so continued consuming the flesh of the unlucky man. As they entered another street where the smell of burnt flesh and the sound of flesh being torn apart seized, they came along a group of six infected soldiers wandering the streets. One infected soldier caught Jack's eyes as he spots a M4 rifle slung over the infected's back. The six infected spotted the four and let out an angry hiss as they approached them while Jack and Candice opened fire at them. It took them combined 9 rounds but eventually the last infected soldier fell. Befriended with several more magazines, a M4 rifle, and a flash slight they turned to another street. There they spot more infected, their numbers greater, on their knees tearing apart his chest. The four slowly sneaked around the feasting infected.

Just as the four were only a few feet away from the infected, the group of infected stopped chewing and immediately got up. The soldier, despite his throat being torn apart, got up with a gurgling moan and approached the four survivors with his undead comrades. Jack and Candice opened fire while they slowly stepped back. After depleting 19 bullets, the 14 infected fell, riddled with bullets.

The sun has disappeared but its lights still glow in the sky as the four reached the police station. The front door of the building has been smashed inward and hundreds of bullet shells cover the ground. Fallen infected cover the stairs as the four pass the large building. Several infected were wandering affront of them but were quickly gunned down. Extremely loud moaning could be heard as the four slowly passed the large building that was so loud that it ached their ears. Jack got out his radio and realized that the broadcast has seized, not quieted down by the moaning.

While tinkering with the radio and passing the parking lot, he was unaware of the hundreds of infected wandering around the lot. The large horde spotted the four survivors and approached them. The radio fell out of Jack's hand and hit the ground hard as he opened fire with his M4. The sisters shrieked as they slowly stepped back. As Candice too opened fire a part of the horde began approaching Stacy and Rebecca who shrieked again and ran the opposite direction.

"Stacy! Rebecca!" shouted Jack as he saw the two sisters run towards the other side of the building. Cursing he grabbed Candice and ran the other direction with hundreds of infected following them. They ran past the front door where several infected appeared and joined in on the horde. Rebecca spotted a basement window and, with her sisters help, broke it open with the last of their strength. The window cracked back giving them enough room to squeeze through.

One by one they climbed through the window just as the infected reached them. Great pain shot through Rebecca's arms, legs, and chest as she hit a hard ground floor. Water splashed around her, soaking her pants and shoes as she realized that the floor is flooded with several inches of water. Except for the little light showing the basement windows, the entire room is basked in darkness. Blind, she crawls around, trying to find her sister.

"Stacy?!" cried out Rebecca as she felt the water filled ground. The sudden splash of water and a gurgling moan came back as a response. Her breathing became irregular as fear began to take over. As her eyes got used to the darkness she recognized a shadowy figure approaching her, splashing the water wildly and letting out a gurgling moan in the process.

Then she heard her sister let out a grunting moan and say "Rebecca? Are you ok?"

The moaning figure immediately changed course and approached the grunting dark figure at the far end of the room.

"Stacy watch out!" cried out Rebecca.

Stacy shrieked as her eyes got used to the darkness and saw the dark figure. Quickly she crawled away with the moaning figure following her. While crawling quickly she felt a hard object under her hands. Affront of her the figure tripped over that object and halted midair as a sickening impaling sound could be heard. The moaning stopped and droplets echoed through the now quiet room. The only thing that can now be heard is the heavy breathing coming from Stacy and Rebecca who sit there frozen and droplets hitting the water.

"Hello? Can you two hear me" asked a static male voice that echoes through the dark room. Frightened by the sudden voice, Rebecca and Stacy looked around, trying to find the voice.

"Don't worry, I don't bite. Pardon the bad pun but I do require your help and seems you two require mine as well. You help me and in return I will help. Now I can't hear you but you can hear me. Your movements in the darkness obviously shows that" said the male voice. A static tone could be heard after every sentence.

"Now my friend was supposed to do this job but by my assumption he didn't make it. As you can see we have no power. No lights thanks to that burst pipe. Thankfully the water has stopped running but it has shut down the generators despite them being water proof. The cameras still work but I can't see well. If you could feel for a lever against the wall and flip it, I will help you out in return."

So the two sisters got up and began feeling through the darkness for said lever. While feeling the wall Stacy felt the wall bend out ward in a cube shape and feel different. Then she felt a stick like object with a handle bend down. She pushed such stick up where the room suddenly flashed with light, hurting her eyes as she was not used to such bright lights. The generator she turned on hummed with an electronic whoosh. Then Stacy jumped as she saw a man in a police uniform impaled into a broken pipe that is sticking out of the roof of the basement, droplets of blood falling out of his open mouth and landing in the water that has turned a light shade of red.

"Much better. Now I can see you two. Can you see me?" asked the male voice. The two sisters looked around and spotted a camera at the left corner of the basement.

"Yep there I am. I'm Norman by the way. Sergeant Harold Norman. Now if you see my fallen friend floating over there, he carries a gun and the radio I am talking through. He will not need it anymore. Please retrieve those objects" said the male voice as the two sisters spot another dead man in police uniform floating head down in the inch deep water. She spots his weapon still holstered and his radio still in the radio pouch. Stacy grabbed both and the few magazines the man had left.

"Um..now what Sergeant Norman?"

"Close the door. The undead have heard the generator and are now heading your way" answered Norman. Rebecca didn't hesitate as they heard loud footsteps and moaning coming from the open door, and closed it. Just then she jumped back and shrieked as fists pounded against the door and it begins to bend inward.

"That door won't last long. I suggest you climb through the air ducts"

"And how do we get there?" asked Stacy.

"There's a hatch above you. The air duct is big enough for the both of you" responded Norman. The radio almost fell out of Stacy's hand as she and Rebecca saw the men that was lying in the water rise, a large bite wound in his neck and his chest torn apart. Stacy raised her Beretta M9 but being it her first time firing a weapon she missed and felt great pain from the recoil.

"What kind of a shot was that? Come on! Put some effort into it" said Norman. Angrily Stacy fired off another round missing the infected man again.

"Oh come on. First time shooting huh? I can tell"

"You are not helping!" snarled Stacy as she fried a third time hitting the infected man in the shoulder knocking him several feet back in the process.

"No no no you got to hit them in the head. That's the only way.."

"I know that!" growled Stacy as she fired again, hitting the man in the cheek. Blood and bits of teeth fell into the water, leaving behind a gaping bullet hole in the man's face giving Rebecca a nauseous feeling. Fear still took hold of Stacy as she tried to aim for the head. She cried out as she pulled the trigger again just as the infected was mere inches away. The bullet hit him in the head this time, splashing the wall and floor with blood and bits of brain as he fell.

"Beautiful. You killed your first zombie...probably. Now unless you have forgotten, please climb into the air duct if you want to end up worse than my friends" yelled Norman just as the door bent inward some more allowing some gray fingers to poke out. Quickly, and without hesitation, Rebecca climbed up with Stacy's help, pushed the vent open, and climbed up. She helped her sister up just as the door broke open and dozens of infected poured into the flooded basement. Inside the narrow air duct the two sisters let out a sigh of relief as they watched dozens of infected police officers and civilians trying to grab them while letting out a gurgling moan.

"Good. Glad you made it. Now that you helped me out and brought power back to this station I will help you out. But first I haven't acquired your names yet"

"I'm Becky and behind me is my friend Veronica" said Rebecca, ignoring her sisters puzzled looks.

"Nice to meet you Becky and Veronica. Now comes the fun part. Follow this air duct until you reach the next hatch. If you hear moaning, don't go down there"

"Ok" answered Stacy. Before she could go she felt Rebecca's hand.

"What's wrong?" asked Stacy as she saw the expression of concern on her sister's face.

"I don't know if we can trust this guy Stacy. We don't know him and I don't like the way he's being so helpful"

"I don't like it either Rebecca but we don't have much of a choice. Jack and Candice are out there looking for us. The best we can do now is stick together, get out of here, and find them."

Rebecca nodded with a weak smile. Being the first time she smiled since their father's death Stacy smiled back and began crawling through the dusty air ducts. While passing hatches where loud moaning came from Rebecca looked down through each hatch where warm light came from. The room that Rebecca saw had a desk in where several infected police officers were looking up. She shrieked a little as one of the infected seemed to see her.

"Hey Norman. May I ask you something?" asked Stacy.

"Yeah Becky. Go ahead" answered Norman.

"What happened here? Why are there so many zombies here?" asked Stacy curiously.

"Well, when everyone got sick and turned at the same time, the citizens began running here for shelter while many others ran for the fort or the harbor. At first everything was doing fine. We had lots of supplies, the water was still running so we had no issue with thirst. But, so many people got sick and died that we had no chance when they rose and began attacking us. I locked myself in the surveillance room when it all happened along with three others. Supplies were dim and we knew that the sickness had to come from the water. When a pipe burst in the basement causing the blackout they volunteered to get it running again. You saw what happened"

"I'm sorry to hear that but why are you helping us?" asked Stacy.

"Because you helped me out and in return I will help you get out of here"

"Alright. Thanks" said Stacy as they looked through a hatch and onto a room with no sign of any infected. As they climbed down they found themselves in the mens restroom.

"No problem. Where are you now?"

"We just reached the mens restroom. Where to now?" asked Stacy.

"Alright...uh..The next part is simple. Just..take the stair case to the roof... and you are home free" responded Norman while coughing heavily.

"Norman are you alright?" asked Stacy.

"I'm...I'm fine. Just go to the stair...case now!" said Norman while coughing again. Stacy sighed and didn't ask again as she carefully, and with her pistol raised, began walking through the corridor with Rebecca. Blood, fallen infected, bits of flesh, and bullet shells along with trash and papers litter the ground as they made their way to the stair case. Thanks to the bright light they didn't have a hard time hiding from any infected police officers and civilians that would wander by from time to time. They reached the stair case and after running up several flights of stairs they reached the roof top where a cool breeze and the star filled sky welcomed them.

"Thanks Norman. Hey do you want to come along with us?" asked Stacy as she enjoyed the fresh air. She got no response.

"Norman?" Again no response.

"Norman can you hear me?" just then she heard a gurgling moan come from the radio. That startled her causing her to drop the radio. The moaning from the radio died as it hit the ground.

"Damn. What now Stacy?" asked Rebecca.

"I..I don't know" said Stacy as she spotted the stadium. From where they stood they had a great view of Boston at night including the stadium. Besides the street lamps bright lights escaped the stadium and while hearing loud gunshots they both saw smoke rising from the stadium, shattering their hopes as they saw hundreds of gray figures entering the stadium.
