Chapter 11: Princess Flower

Why hello. ;)

***************************************************************************************

"How dare you speak to me like that. We will both love this babe no matter what the gender," a soft, feminine voice caressed my ears in Latin. It was still odd that I could now understand the Old Language because I was a reaper.

I slowly opened my eyes and took in my surroundings. It was a decently sized room with hand crafted chairs and a large bed. A woman in a golden nightgown and long, wavy blond hair gazed out a single large window of the cabin and vigorously shut the curtains. A man sat on the bed that lay against a wall, steadily watching her. The man wore a long sleeved shirt rolled up at the forearms that stretched along his sinewy back muscles as he slowly leaned forward, putting his head in his hands.

I cautiously stepped around the room, realizing that they could not see me. Was this a dream? Surely it was too real to be a dream. I peered around the bed to confirm my assumptions that the man on the bed was in fact Alexandru Cruscellio, Death before he was changed into an angel. Which meant that the woman in the room had to be Annona.

"I am only saying that my father will take the news much better if it is a boy," Alexandru explained in his smooth voice. Hmph. Maybe his voice was always sexy after all. "Perhaps...he will understand why we have been together in secret--"

"Your father must never know!" Annona turned around sharply, the small swell of her stomach and piercing blue eyes startling me. "If we tell him about the babe at all he will kill it. Do you understand me? He will kill it. Your father is ruthless."

Alexandru started to get up. "Malphas is ruthless. But I don't believe he is that ruthless--"

"Yes, he is. He has lain dozens of females in the village, most of which have lost their minds. Do you think that is a coincidence? His charm is poison. He hurts you and you are blind. I have seen the bruises, the pain in your eyes. I wished to never meet your father. Seeing him the other day... I'm afraid."

Alexandru's mouth fell in a flat line. He slowly sat back down on the bed, rubbing his hands along his dark pants. "You know those incidents of the insane have never been trailed back to my father, Annona--"

"You are a fool, Alexandru. A damn fool." Annona walked back to the window and peered out between the curtains. "And I will love this babe if it is a girl. If you do not love it as I will, then....I will leave you. My child can survive its mothers love just like I did--"

"Of course I will love the babe if it is a girl. You know that I have always wanted a girl," he said crossing the room to her in a matter of seconds. "I--I am only worried what will happen once Malphas knows what we have done." As Alexandru stood behind Annona, she didn't even spare him a glance nor pushed him away as he cradled her from behind and kissed her cheek. She just stared at the window, tears filling her light blue eyes as they grew heated.

"What we have done?" Annona turned around, her delicate face frowning. She pushed past him until she was standing stagnant in the middle room. "We haven't done anything bad, Alexandru. We have cared for one another. We have made love. We have been given a gift from God and we both should be thankful for." She clutched at her stomach as if she was fearful her swell would disappear. "A small, innocent angel lives inside of me and it is a babe that the Heavens will determine will be a handsome boy or a beautiful girl. I will love this child unconditionally as I already do. I wish you would do the same."

"Annona, my father will think of a baby boy as his champion. Don't you understand how he thinks? Haven't I told you enough?" Alexandru started towards her when she moved out of his reach, went to the bed, and covered herself entirely with the blankets.

"Maybe you've told me to much. Maybe--maybe Malphas knows about our child already. This is a babe that I will not lose, Alexandru, no matter what the gender. I will not lose this babe. Not this time... Not this time..."

Suddenly, I heard a door open behind me but I was unable to move. Alexandru started to turn towards me, his vivid green eyes on the brink of tears and so piercing, it was as if he was already capable of seeing into my soul.

You know that I have always wanted a girl.

The scene shuddered violently until I was thrown back against a wall, now facing a modernly structured room that was all too familiar. My eyes immediately fell to the small girl with black hair and blue eyes jumping up and down on my old twin sized bed and Dinosaur comforter that I had known was for boys but cried for an entire hour to have after seeing it on a commercial. She had on a princess dress, a tiara, and lipstick that she had obviously had my mother apply.

"Faith, your food is ready for your dinner date!" Mother cried out from the kitchen, clearly trying to suppress her laughter.

Little Faith snatched Mr. Wiggles off of her bed and fled to the other room. "Did you hear that, Mr. Wiggles? Woo-hoo!" When she came back, she had two small tea cups in her hand and my mother trailing behind her with a tray of cookies -- some fake and some real -- and a bowl of macaroni.

"Mr. Wiggles, you look so dashing!" Mother said, pinching Mr. Wiggles small bear tuxedo where Little Faith had situated him at her small table in the middle of the room. "You know, your father still doesn't know about this dinner date or he'd be all over this."

"He's just jealous because I married Mr. Wiggles instead of him."

My mother threw her head back and laughed and then surprise tickled Little Faith, making her laugh until her tiara almost falling off her head.

"Remember, don't interrupt us or I'll only draw daddy pictures !" Little Faith said, pointing a finger in my mother's face then kissing her sloppily on the cheek.

"As long as Mr. Wiggles doesn't make any moves on you." My mother gave Mr. Wiggles the stink eye and slowly closed the door, making Little Faith giggle even more.

Once my mother had left the room, Little Faith went to the door, stuck her head out, then hurried back to the table and set up the small wooden table with the goodies that my mother had brought in, filling the small plastic tea cups. I found myself kneeling on the ground at her level and then sitting cross legged, silently watching Little Faith take a the drawing that had been in her hand and folding it into a small square on the bed, before placing it in front of Mr. Wiggles and laying her hands delicately on the table in the seat across from him.

"You're late, Mr. Wiggles is my date now," Little Faith said, her gaze briefly moving to the corner of the room where Death had appeared out of nowhere, then back to her bowl of mac and cheese which she took a tiny, well-mannered forkful from.

"So you've replaced me already? I thought we were married." Death's large frame overpowering the entire room as he stood over the puny little kids table setup.

"Mommy said I'm a princess. I can have as many boys as I want, Blanky," Little Faith said, stabbing her fork and taking another dainty bite of her macaroni. "And we're not married anymore. You're too big anyways and won't show me your face anymore."

"But what about the ring you gave me? I thought we were forever?" Death said, holding out his gloved hand where a pink ribbon was tied around his glove. "Don't do this to me, baby."

"I use to like you but now you're poop because you were late"

Death started to laugh at Little faith, when suddenly she chuckled her wand at his head. "Ow! What the--? What the hell...o was that for?" Death bent down and picked up the plastic purple wand, examining it as he touched his shadow face. "Whatever happened to Play-doh? Little girls shouldn't have this. It's like a ninja star or something."

"I'm not a little girl, Blanky," Faith said, pushing back her chair and puffing out her chest. She reached up and yanked on Death's cloak until he gave her the wand back. "I'm a pretty princess and you are now my ex-husband. So go away, poop-head. Go play with souls." She then proceeded to whack him in the thigh and knee with the wand.

"Ow! Ow! I'm sorry, ok? Ow! I'll never be late--ow! Again!"

"Promise?" Little Faith stopped and stared up at Death and crossed her arms over her chest. "Promise you won't be late again."

"I promise."

"Maybe next time, Mr. Wiggles." Little Faith picked up Mr. Wiggles and set him on the bed, then kicked back his abandoned seat, looked up at Death again, and pointed at the chair with her eyes narrowed. "Have a seat, Blanky."

Death stared down at the puny little wooden chair that was sixty times smaller than him for a good forty seconds, before pushing it back even further and slowly, cautiously bending down to sit in it. Once he had sat down on it fully, he didn't move a muscle, clearly fearful that it would collapse at any moment.

"So are you ever going to stop calling my Blanky? It's doesn't exactly make me feel masculine, Faith."

"No. I don't even know what masculine means. And my name is Princess Flower. Duh." Little Faith continued to narrow her eyes at Death as she sipped her tea. "Aren't you going to try your tea?" she wondered.

"Why of course, Princess Flower." Death gingerly reached down and gripped the miniature cup with his bear-paw of a hand and took a sip. "This isn't tea, it's apple juice."

"No, it's tea."

"No, it's definitely apple juice. I know what apple juice tastes like. This is definitely apple juice."

"It's tea," Faith snapped, stabbing her fork again into her mac and cheese.

Death shrunk back a little, his chair cracking a little in protest. "Right, right. The best tea I've ever had too. Honest." His head tilted down to Little Faith's bowl of macaroni and he set his drink back on the table. "Princess Flower, can you please tell me why you get a bowl of mac and cheese and I get a plastic donut?"

"It's not plastic."

"Not this again," Death mumbled.

"Do you want a brownie?" Little Faith asked, holding out a brownie from her side of the small table.

"Is it a real brownie?"

Little Faith frowned.

"Fine, I'll take it."

Little Faith pulled the treat away before Death could take it. "Well then you shouldn't have been late if you wanted it. You don't get a brownie. Bad Blanky."

"Bad Blanky? Wow. Tough love in Midget town. Would you forgive me if I said I was sorry? I don't apologize too often, but I know that I hurt your feelings and as your loyal husband I want you to be very happy."

"No you don't, you just want to sleep on my bed again while I make you pretend food in my pretend kitchen and distract Mommy from coming in my room."

Death suppressed his laughter with a cough, then sipped his apple juice."What's your IQ again?"

"I made you a drawing," Little Faith said, taking the folded piece of paper that was lain out in front of him. "But you can't have it anymore because you were late."

Death sighed. "No brownie and no drawing? This sucks! Why are you still mad at me for being late? You never forgive me for the longest time. I had some things I had to do before I came here. You know it's hard for me to see you."

"It's not that."

Death set down his teacup."Then what is it?"

"You didn't get me a gift. You don't like me anymore, do you?" Little Faith covered her eyes and started to cry.

"Oh...oh no. Not the water works." Death shifted uncomfortably in his ridiculously small chair. "It's alright. I still like you." When he reached out to touch Little Faith, his chair broke and his bottom hit the ground hard. "Shit! I mean fuck-- I mean damnit!"

"You said a bad word!" Little Faith sobbed, flipping over her chair and running into the closet, shutting the door behind her.

"Faith..." Death pushed himself off of the floor and softly knocked on the closet door. "Faith, come on, open up. I'm sorry."

"It's Princess Flower!"

"Princess Flower--"

"The prettiest princess of them all!" she added, still sobbing.

"The prettiest princess of them all is damn--dang right," Death said, then crouched to the floor. "I got you a gift, Princess Flower, the prettiest princess of them all. I just wanted it to be a surprise."

A pause. "I don't like you anymore! You're poop!"

"Yes you do. You like me." Death picked up the folded up note where Faith had dropped it and opened it up. "You like me a lot, or you wouldn't have drawn this picture of me with hearts," Death said, looking down at the drawing in his hand. There was a smile in his voice.

Little Faith opened the closet door open a crack, and because the closet light was on her blue eye was evident as it peered out into the room. "Do you like it?" she whispered, sniffling.

Death laughed lowly. "I love it. It's perfect, just like your dress and your crown. Now, do you want to see your gift?"

Little Faith opened the door a crack more. "Is it expensive?"

"Very. But you have to come out for me to show you."

Little Faith hesitated for a moment, before stepping out of the closet in front of Death with her hands clasped shyly in front of her and her head down. Her cheeks were wet with tears.

Death reached up and wiped at her cheeks with his large thumbs. "Do you want to see your gift, Princess Flower, prettiest princess of them all?"

She nodded, smiling.

Death chuckled, starting to pull up his sleeve. On top of his tribal tattoos on his wrist was a golden watch with pink diamonds along the heart-shaped glass frame and on along the wrist band. As Little Faith covered her mouth with her hands and started to jump excitedly in place, Death unhooked the watch from his own wrist and held it out between them.

"If you lose this, you owe me so many plastic donuts it's not even funny," Death said, slipping the watch on her wrist and tightening it on the last latch. It still dangled loosely on her wrist, but she didn't seem to care.

"Do you like it? It's what all the pretty princesses wear these days." Death leaned back a little. "I...I can return it if you don't like--"

Little Faith latched onto his neck, pulling him into a suffocating hug. "I love it! You are the best husband ever!"

At that, Death was speechless, and I woke up gasping for air.
