Chapter 5 - Hearsay

Bucky sat in his desk chair facing out at the city his mind racing. Today he had almost fumbled an important merger when a bad memory filled his head. Of course, he had quickly pushed the memory away and recollected himself just enough to make the deal a success. Now, he was sitting here letting the memory fill his mind again. How many years had it been since he thought about his older brother? He couldn't remember. Lifting his hand up he gently starts to rub his chin methodically.

Richard, the oldest, at least he was. Now Bucky had to be the heir of the company. His hand moves to his hair as he smooths his chocolate locks back. He turns away from the window back to his desk. Clearing his throat, he pulls his keys from his pocket and reaching over unlocks a locked secret compartment on his desk. Opening it, he looks inside to see pictures of him and his siblings when they were younger. His mother may have locked up Richard's room, and their father may have hidden all pictures with Richard in them trying to make it look like he had never existed; but Rebecca had sneaked a select few out.

He had some of those locked safely in his desk. No one knew about this compartment and he aimed to keep it that way. He smiles fondly at the photos as he continues to look through them. When he finishes he looks back into the compartment and sees a vanilla folder making him grimace. Gritting his teeth, he pulls the file out and opening it sees pictures and witness accounts of the accident that had taken his brother from him. The witnesses all said that (Name) was adamant about not leaving Richard's side and that if he was gone she wanted to die with him.

The thought of what he had said to her all those years ago still ate at him. It's not his fault he was fed false information from both his own father and her step-father. He thought she was just some money hungry liar just like her step-father but he had been wrong. He flips a page to show the medical records for the treatment she had received upon reaching the hospital. Some treatment she ended up having mainly because of what he had convinced her she had done. He furrows his brow as his fingers thrum on top of the records.

When he had found out the truth, after some extensive research on his sister's part, he had tried his hardest to find her but it was like she just disappeared. (Name) (Last Name) had just disappeared off the face of the earth. Of course, he had kept his secret search exactly that, secret. Only one person knew he was searching for (name), and that was his ex-girlfriend Natasha. She only knew because Bucky had gotten super drunk one night and spilled his guts to her. Of course, being the amazing person she was, she promised to keep his secret.

A knocking sound pulls him from his thoughts making him quickly collect the file and shove it back into the compartment. After Locking it he calls out for them to enter. Opening the door his assistant, an older woman named Mrs. Bennet, calls out, "Mr. Barnes, your sister is here to see you. Would you like me to send her in?"

"AH, yes, of course. Thank you, Katheryn." He replies letting out a sigh of relief.

"Go on in Miss Barnes." Katheryn says as she holds the door open.

"Hello brother mine," Rebecca says a bright smile filling her face as she waltzes into his room practically glowing.

"To what do I owe the honor of your visit?" he asks not getting up from his seat making her force a fake frown.

"Can't a sister just come by and see her brother because she misses him?" She asks siting down and politely crossing her legs.

"She can... but you haven't." He replies a smirk filling his lips.

"I am offended; but you're right. I didn't come by just because I wanted to see you."

"You don't say,"

"Shut up and let me talk, meanie." She chastises making him bite his lips to keep from laughing. "As you know, I have been dating my boyfriend John, for a while now-"

"Are you pregnant?" he asks with a straight face making her glare at him.

"Not yet, but maybe after my wedding I will be." She nonchalantly says giving him a sneaky smile.

"That's horrible news. Does John know?" Bucky asks standing up from his seat to walk over and stand beside her chair.

"Oh ha ha very funny Bucky, I am just dying with laughter." She states sarcastically folding her arms over her chest in mock annoyance.

"My apologies," Bucky replies holding his hands up in surrender. "Congratulations baby sister, when's the big day?"

"Mom and Dad, they want to do a semi big wedding. You know, business partners, family, friends, possible companies they can merge with, you know, the works."

"I don't care what they want, what do you want?"

"I want mom to be happy." She answers a hint of sadness in her eyes. "Also, his family is very set on a traditionally big wedding, so I guess that's what I'll get."

"But it's your wedding." Bucky says starting to get irritated at his parents and Becca's future in-laws. "Come on Becca, I'm glad you're happy you are getting married; but shouldn't you get the kind of wedding you want?"

"It's okay Bucky," She says reaching out to take his hand in hers. "At least with a big wedding the gifts are sure to be amazing." She jokes making him smirk.

"I just want you to be happy."

"I am," she says standing up beside him. "I truly am Bucky. I just wish you could find some happiness of your own."

"I will, one day." He answers using his free hand to pat hers. "But for now, I am married to my job. I don't have time for relationships."

"Workaholic." She says and he shakes his head.

"I won't argue with you." Bucky replies pulling away from her to move to his coat rack to grab his jacket.

"What are you doing?" She asks her eyes following him.

"Grabbing my coat. I'm taking you out to lunch to celebrate." He says smiling brightly at her.

"Oh really, I'm picking somewhere expensive as hell then." She adds as she rushes past him to the office door.

"You wouldn't be my sister if you didn't." He says a laugh escaping his lips as his cell phone dings signaling he has a text message. "Ah, just a second." Pulling out his cell phone he sees it's a text from his friend Steve and he cocks an eyebrow. Opening the text, he stares at it for a moment completely dumbfounded.

I met someone. – Steve

"Who is it?" Becca asks suddenly curious.

"Uh it's Steve,"

"Oh, how is he, I haven't seen him since Peggy's funeral. That was a few years ago, right?" Becca asks a worried expression filling her face.

"He says he met someone." Bucky replies his eyes focused on the screen of his cell phone.

"Huh?" Becca replies confusion filling her face even more.

Bucky couldn't believe it. He was certain that after Steve lost Peggy he would never get involved with another woman again. Steve had always told him that he would love only Peggy for the rest of his life. So, who was this new girl that had Steve changing his mind for?
