Chapter 11 - Dirty Little Secrets
Tony stood, his arm propped up against the wall, beside a brunette girl with charcoal eyes. On a scale of one to ten she was about an eight, seven maybe, but he found that although she was good looking, she lacked for good conversation. He forces a smile as he swirls the liquor in his glass. He was getting bored. He glances around the room and cocks an eyebrow as he sees Mr. and Mrs. Barnes sneaking around a corner. His curiosity gets the better of him as he gracefully excuses himself to follow after them.
Tony follows expertly behind them as to not let them know he was following them. He didn't like how their expressions looked like they were up to no good. He followed them to the parlor and he cracks the door open just enough that he can hear what is happening inside but they can't see or hear him.
"If you're about to suggest what I think you are then I'm gonna stop you right now." George says making his wife let out a humph.
"You saw the two of them together, George, you have to admit there's a connection there." Winnifred replies making Tony cock an eyebrow. What were they talking about?
"You do realize the girl's already taken, don't you?" He pauses shuffling some papers on his desk. "Or do you want to take another person away from Steve?" Tony's eyes widen as he realizes the two of them are talking about his little sister. A million emotions filled his body. He was angry, disgusted, and well just extremely pissed off. It took everything he had from marching in there and telling them off.
"Oh, come on, Peggy was an accident. If I knew she was gonna have an adverse reaction to the medication I wouldn't have sent her to that doctor. I loved her like my own child." Winnifred retorts a hint of regret lacing her words.
"Whatever you say dear." George replies trying to end the conversation.
"Okay, putting Steve aside, if she was single would you put more thought into her marrying James?"
"If she wasn't with Steve," George pauses thinking it over. "Then I might consider it. Stark Enterprises is a multi-billion-dollar company and a merger with them would be good for us. Plus, James does seem to have something for her."
"See,"
"But he'll never do anything to hurt Steven." George solidifies the zero chance of it ever happening to his wife and she scoffs.
"He won't, but who's to say she won't." Winnifred says making Tony take a step forward only to have someone grab his arm and hold him back. He turns back to see Rebecca standing there an angry expression on her face. She places a finger on her lips signaling for him to keep quiet before she motions for him to follow after her. Tony furrows his brow but follows the youngest Barnes child away from her parents. When they are far enough away from them she turns back to him and asks, "What exactly did they say?"
Tony cocks an eyebrow for a moment before he decides to tell her everything. She was innocent in this. The more he revealed to her, the angrier she got. "How dare they!" She exclaims looking around the room.
"What are you doing?" He asks.
"Looking for something to break. I can't believe... No, I take that back... I can believe they'd try something like that. What they hell am I supposed to tell Steve? What would happen if he knew that mom was semi responsible for Peggy?" Tears start to fill Rebecca's eyes making Tony's brotherly instincts kick in and he pulls her into a hug. "What am I supposed to tell them Tony?"
"I'll handle it. You're getting married tomorrow. Just worry about that." Tony says patting her back as she lets out a heavy sigh.
"How can I not worry about them?" She asks pulling away only slightly so she could look up into his eyes.
"(Name)'s strong, she can handle herself; and Steve," He pauses for a moment as he looks over her head at nothing in particular before he continues, "Steve will be strong for his daughter. If something goes down, all we can do is be there for them. So, for now, just enjoy your prewedding jitters. Okay?" He asks and she nods.
"Thank you, Tony, (Name) is lucky to have you." Rebecca replies offering him a soft smile before she pulls away completely. "You're right, I need to get back before anyone realizes I'm missing. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Okay," Tony replies as she runs off toward the main room. He waits until she's gone to let out an annoyed sigh. He really wanted to go back to the parlor throw the door open and give the Barnes parents a piece of his mind but he decided against it once he thought about the repercussions it would have against his sister. She was already stressed to the max about being in this house after all these years he wasn't about to add to her stress. Straightening his tie, he decides its time he leaves this house of horrors.
