Chapter 56 | sentancing

A/n: only a few chapters left ahhhhh

Two full days of back and fourth in court, it was late, you were tired and wanted this to be over.

And finally, the jury had a verdict. This case was about to close, after almost a year chasing down the death notes and having to prove their existence to the government it was all finally coming down to this. You and L had worked your asses off in his trail, and you were particularly exhausted by it. L was tired too, but seemed rather fired up since this was the big moment.

Maybe it was you being hormonal because you know, pregnant. But you felt particularly drained and tired, not just physically but emotionally. You expected to be exited that it was all coming to and end, and you were but inside you felt more... empty about it. Maybe you were just so desensitised to the Kira talk by now you didn't care how it ended as long as Light was jailed.

"Well, it's been a very very long trail. Thank you everyone for sticking through it, but we finally have an official verdict" the judge began.

Everyone was on the edge of their seats. You and L hoping everything worked and the appropriate sentence would be given, and Light hoping he could get off at least with a plea deal or something that'd lessen his impending sentence.

"Given DNA evidence, timelines matching up, statements from living victims an taskforce members it's clear beyond any shadow of a doubt that Light Yagami and Misa Amane were both Kira for at least 5-6 months before loosing their memories and passing the power onto the now convicted Higuchi..."

This was going well, you'd convinced the jury and judge they were the killers. Now you just needed the sentencing.

"Beginning with Amane, we have accepted the plea deal due to her cooperation and participation in making a truthful statement to police. While she did commit murder, there was a considerable amount of abuse and manipulation from Yagami that warped her mindset. She also displayed genuine regret and remorse for her actions once she was bought to her senses through the loss of memory and break up with Light Yagami. With the advice of L we hear by accept her guilty plea deal with a verdict of guilty of second degree murder. Amane will be sentenced to 40 years imprisonment with no chance of parole, and she's required to have mental health assessments on a regular basis"

That should please rem. You let out a sigh of relief. Misa was very lucky to have Rem or she'd be locked up for life, but with that deal you made with Rem, she was offered a much lesser sentence. You knew Misa had potential to redeem herself while in prison, especially if she was having regular checkups on her health. You truly hoped she didn't throw the chance away.

"Thank god" L sighed under his breath, glad that your end of the deal was properly fulfilled and there was no zero chance of  any surprise attacks from any shinigami on you or him.

"I told you it'd work, we aren't dying just yet my love... there's a lot we have to live for at the moment" you replied.

Misa was obviously sad to go to prison, who wouldn't be? But she knew this was the best possible outcome for her and she was willing to pay that price if it meant she could one day get out and walk the streets again. She gave you and L a thankful look for getting her the plea deal, and you gave her one back. You may be on different sides, but you can sympathise for her situation in some areas.

"Now, as for Light Yagami... given the indisputable evidence against him, it is abundantly clear that he was the original Kira who started the whole mess. A mental health assessment shows that he is mentally unstable, but was of sound mind when the crimes were committed as killings were pre-planned in several occasions. We reject his insanity plea, and nearby sentence him to first degree murder, and domestic abuse charges. He will remain in prison for the rest of his life, with a life sentence. If he continues to show dangerous behaviour, that sentence can be upped to death. He will have zero possibly of parole" the judge announced.

You and L wanted to get up and start screaming in joy, so much work and hatred toward the man for what he did was finally paying off. You won, you and your husband won. Holding back the urge to scream in joy you stayed silent while still seating before the judge.

Light didn't look sad, he looked angry, furious even. He was angry he got caught, angry he lost, angry he couldn't continue his path to 'god of the new world'.

And his family? You felt bad for them. Having to witness their own son be sentenced to life for two despicable charges. It's hard enough knowing your child is a killer, harder knowing you'll likely never see them again. His mother looked sad, his father seemed disappointed and his little sister looked furiously at her brother.

Of all the family, Sayu probably took the news the hardest. At first she couldn't believe her brother was Kira, but when she was shown the proof she became absolutely enraged at him. So many complicated emotions brewed in the still very young girl. Her brothers actions would sadly affect her for the rest of her life, his as they would his parents.

The wrap up of the case was a blur for you and L, too exited and relived to pay any attention. You'd done tons of cases before, you knew the jist anyway. Your hands were held together tightly as the judge dismissed the case and ended the court hearing.

Finally after two long days of trail you could rest easy. The criminals were taken away for prison, the taskforce seemed emotionally drained and since it was so late they all went home after a brief chat. And the Yagami family now had to return home without their son, to process what he'd done and a life without him would begin.

You and L were left outside the courtroom waiting as Watari went to get the car for you both. As soon as everyone was gone, the two of you exploded in excitement like teenage girls seeing their favourite boy band. Laughing and jumping around all immature and happy. Finally, it was over. Finally, you'd won. Finally, Light and all his accomplices were dealt with.

Jumping into a tight hug, you and L squeezed each other affectionately.

"Finally!" You smiled.

"I've never been more satisfied with a court hearing in my life! It's all over it's finally over! This stupid case that haunted us for so long is finally closed I- ughhhh finally!" L vented happily.

You loved seeing him all exited and proud of winning cases. He was so cute.

"Another one under your belt world greatest detective, well done"

"Hey, you helped too. Don't just praise me here because I lead the case you did so much for it, without you and your clumsy actions we'd never have solved it" he replied.

He'd never let you falling off the desk go would he?

"Alright alright, we both did it. We locked the god wannabe bitch up. I'm proud of us" you smiled.

"I'm proud of us too" L replied.

Slightly lifting the mask that hid his face now that no one was around to see him, you placed a kiss on his lips. He'd waited for that victory kiss for so long he immediately fell into it. It wouldn't be as good as the kiss on your wedding day, but it was definitely in second place for best kiss ever. It felt so freeing and loving, so passionate and caring. He never wanted it to end, but humans need to breathe eventually.

The shinigami watching you from the steps of the courthouse would have scoffed at that kiss at first, but now he could see why it meant so much.

"Are you going to follow them around now it's over?"

Ryuk turned to find Rem, who he knew was going to follow Misa for a bit before going back to the shinigami realm. Just to make sure she was ok in prison.

"Yeah for a little. I wanna see L's reaction to the news. Maybe after the baby is born I'll head back up to the shinigami realm" Ryuk replied.

"You're a death god celebrating a life? I told you you'd end up a fool"

"You know what Rem... maybe love isn't just for mortals and fools. Maybe even though we can't experience it the same way humans do, it's still something interesting to think about..."

Watari pulled up with the car, and finally you could head back to taskforce to sleep. And tomorrow you'd be working on packing everything to leave for home at the end of the month. The building itself? It could go to the taskforce police, they helped after all. They could use the extra space. And having it there would always be good in case another case in Japan came around.

"Well, I'm tired as hell let's go" you said.

"Yeah let's go, for once I actually want to sleep. Although I can't wait to get back home. For some reason I always sleep the best in my bed at the orphanage..." L replied.

"Yeah, I can't wait to be back home too"
