Chapter 49 | risky move
Remember, Remember, the 5th of November.
The day L would have died if you hadn't touched that death note paper in lights wallet all that time ago. Instead of taking his last breath in your arms, he was standing before the taskforce alive and well.
Two shinigami behind him, watching as a risky move was about to happen.
He held up the death note in a plastic evidence bag for the taskforce to see, at long last they had the weapon. And now with Higuchis arrest and confession, they had the proof it was real and the only thing left would be to have the government file it as a weapon of mass destruction, and the case could go to court and pass.
That was already in process, there was another thing they needed to prove. Lights connection to it all.
And you and L knew how, even if it was a risk.
"This is it, this is the weapon. It looks like a normal book, but behind me stand two shinigami that prove it's real" L explained.
"Uh... I don't see any-" Matsuda began.
"Hang on. Let me explain. You need to touch it in order to see it. You'll only be able to see one as this book is connected to them, the other one is connected to the missing book and the only reason me and (y/n) can see him is because of a pure accident that happened... in Light Yagami room"
As usual, the taskforce grew irritated at L for accusing Light. Light himself scoffing at the millionth accusation.
"When I went to put the cameras in his room, I fell off the desk and knocked some things over. There's footage from about 34 different angles to prove that. I picked everything up and suddenly I was able to see the shinigami when Light came home as I watched over the cameras. It took me a while to figure it out but there was a single slip of paper in his wallet that I knocked over, I put it back. I touched it. I touched it, and since it was a clipping from the death note I can see Ryuk. That paper should still be in Lights wallet, he hasn't touched it since he put it there completely forgetting about it" you explained.
"Tch, who'd believe that? Paper makes you see shinigami?" Light scoffed.
"Look in your wallet Light"
If he touched the slip of paper he'd see Ryuk, but he wouldn't remember he was Kira yet. You need to touch the whole book for that. Rem told you that, as she was going to use that trick in Misa to tell her about Higuchi but then Ryuk starting getting a little obsessed with you and L and she knew that things would only get dangerous for Misa if she started becoming suspicious to you and L again with your extra knowledge from Ryuk.
Light glared at you, taking out his wallet and digging around for the paper. Finding it at the bottom buried under coins, he picked it up and pulled it out.
"This thing? This mealy thing? Yeah right. You and L are getting desperate" Light sassed.
You pointed over at L, and Light followed your gaze. Sure enough, Ryuk towered behind him making Light jump in fright upon laying eyes on the shinigami.
"Believe me now?" You sassed back.
Ryuk laughed at his previous companions reaction, as the taskforce slightly panicked at Light seemingly hallucinating in front of them.
"Long time no see hey Light?" Ryuk laughed.
"B-but- what?"
You and L snickered under your breath, watching the pathetic wannabe god cower at the sight of his old shinigami buddy.
"Light? What wrong are you actually seeing something?" Chief Yagami asked.
It was all going to plan. No one but you and L would touch the death note. The taskforce would touch the paper in Light wallet and a torn page from Rems book. That way Light and Misa wouldn't get any memories back and make them more of a risk. The risk in this plan was having Light know that the death note exists.
As long as you kept it hidden at all times, and he didn't touch it, you'd be fine.
Just as you thought, his father touched the paper in lights hand and when he saw Ryuk he jumped as well.
"What the- you weren't lying?" He questioned.
"I may lie a lot to protect my identity but this is the one thing I've been serious about from the start. Tell them Ryuk" L said.
"He's right. I've been here the whole time, he hasn't lied about the death note once" Ryuk confirmed.
"Alright you lot calm down. Everyone touch that paper and then take this paper and touch it too" you instructed.
It was like trying to wrangle cats with the taskforce all scared of the tall demon looking things and confused as to what was going on as you had them all touch the paper. But once the debacle was over, you could get back on track.
"Alright, now that everyone can see the shinigami and know we're telling the truth let me explain. After I touched the paper, that literally confirmed that Light was in possession of a death note, I confronted Ryuk and he told me a small amount of what was happing. He refused to tell me all the details because it was entertaining to him, but he did confirm that yes Light indeed was the original Kira..." you began.
"For fuck sake's you're going to trust a shinigami over a human? They're death gods aren't they? Can they really be trusted?" Light cut you off.
You gave him a pissed off glare and snapped back at him.
"Your fingerprints are all over this book Light, your handwriting in it too. You were the original Kira and that's final, I know you don't want to admit it but even with your lost memories you know full well that you're in deep shit now. So zip and let me speak"
L gave you a subtle loving look when you snapped at Light. He always liked when you asserted your dominance like that, it riled him up. Of course, he wouldn't let that show when the taskforce were right there. But damn... it's hot watching you angry.
"Ryuk never told me about the death note. We found that out all by ourselves from clues and the limited information we knew from Ryuk. When we finally got this one it revealed rem, which also revealed that yes... misa was the original second Kira"
Misa looked angry at what she thought was an accusation rather than truth. Deep down she knew that you were right, even with her lost memories she could see all the evidence you had right in front of her.
"So what happened is you both revoked ownership of your books and lost your memory along with it. Higuchi remembers everything because he never revoked it, I stole it from his car and now it's in my possession that makes the owners of the book me. Of course, I don't plan on killing anyone with it. Even if the two of you have no memory of your crimes, you committed them. You're both murderers and that's that" you explained.
There was another part to this plan, one that held up your end of the deal with Rem.
"What's going to happen is we're sending the death note to a secure location where it will be treated as a weapon of mass destruction and guarded. The fingerprint evidence has been cataloged, all the pages have been scanned and you can read them on the shared case drive on the computers. Then all we need to do is connect the dots of the events that happened while these two had the books and we have a case and conviction. The other book will forever remain lost, wherever Light buried it is beyond us and Ryuk won't say anything.
There is one thing that we know for sure though..." you said.
Here it came, the nail in the coffin. The wedge between Light and Misa was about to be placed, if she took the bait, it would all work out.
"Thanks to all the available evidence we can say for absolute sure that when Light and Misa first met, Misa offered her help and death note. Light agreed only because she would be useful to him and he didn't want her to leak anything about the death note. There was no love from him, it's one sided. Only Misa had feelings here, and the proof of that?
The writing in this book changes from Misas handwriting and gel pens to Lights handwriting and mechanical pencil halfway through the book. Meaning she gave that book to Light, willingly or not we'll never know. But after he got his hands on her book, he had full control over her, he could manipulate her and bend her at his will. Misa's fragile mental state having lost her parents brutally and then the killer getting caught by Kira made her feel in-debt to Kira" L began.
Misa was listening now, she wanted to see where this was going. At first she was angry at L for even suggesting that their relationship was bad. But as he continued, Misa started to wonder if he was right.
"Light saw how damaged Misa was, and used that to make her his puppets. Successfully manipulating her into working for him. Yes she offered first, but once he took the offer all her safety and will was stripped of her. He had the books, at any moment as soon as she wasn't useful to him, he'd kill her. Without a doubt, Light had the intention to kill Misa as soon as she wasn't useful anymore"
Just as you thought, it got a rise out of both of them. Things were going well.
"Are you saying I'm an abuser? A killer and an abuser?" Light exclaimed.
"I'm saying you're deranged Light. A criminal, murderer and abuser" L sassed.
"He hasn't done anything to me! Don't accuse him!" Misa snapped.
"He may not have hit you physically but he sure as hell played you like a flute"
Light stood up angrily and slammed his hands on the table.
"For fuck sakes L! If you have my fingerprints on the book then fine! Maybe I did touch the book once in passing, BUT IM NOT KIRA OR AN ABUSER!" He exclaimed.
"Misa how many times as he kissed you?" L asked.
"Why do you want to know? Creep!" She snapped.
"Darling on average how often would you say we kiss?" L asked, turning to you.
The shinigami and taskforce watched as the situation only got more and more tense.
"Hmm, every second I get to have my lips on you I do. Good morning and goodnight kisses, praise kisses, quick pecks... definitely over 10 times a day" you said, giving him a flirty tone as you spoke.
"And I'll ask again, how many times has Light kissed you Misa?" L asked.
It was silent for a moment, a somber look starting to form on Misas face when she realised what L was getting at.
"Once..." she muttered.
"Once... in almost a year together... any dates?"
"...once"
"Any hugs?"
"...once"
"Hardly seems like a relationship then doesn't it?"
It fell silent, Light knew he was fucked. Misa was starting to realise what exactly you and L meant by Light pulling her strings and the taskforce were all too shocked at the oddly personal argument to butt in. Ryuk wanted to laugh, and Rem knew that you and L we're holding up your end of the deal. It was painful to see Misa sad, but she'd rather watch her upset for a little while than watch her stuck in an abusive relationship.
Sometimes you need to be shattered first to be happy again. Rather than slowly crack over the course of your life.
"You... never loved me didn't you?" Misa asked.
"W-what? Yes I did why would I be dating you if I didn't love you?" Light panicked.
"Then why don't you show it? Why don't you take me on dates? Why don't you hug me? Why don't you tell me I'm pretty? Why don't you say you love me? Why don't you kiss me? Why do you avoid me rather than chase after me?"
"Misa I-"
Tears began to well up in Misas eyes and she finally started to realise with all the evidence right there in front of her that she'd been blinded by love this whole time. And in reality you and L were right. She spoke in a quiet somber voice.
"If you really loved me... you'd be kissing the ground I walk on the way L does for (y/n)..."
There it was. The final crack in the relationship if you could even call it that. You stood beside your husband, hand in hand as you watched everything begin to crumble.
