Chapter 44 | talking under the stars

Up on the rooftop under the stars, you sat on one of the seats up there. Donning your nightly black gown and slippers you were off in your own world.

Suppose it was the amount of twists this case took that had you pondering. You definitely weren't expecting befriending a shinigami and making a mortal enemy on this case, it was definitely interesting but very tiring. It'd been going on a lot longer than you'd anticipated as well, so you were understandably a little homesick for England and your fathers graveyard. Japan was pretty, and very fun. But it wasn't home.

Behind you L stood in the doorway of the rooftop, having just finished work for the night. Ryuk loomed over him watching as well.

"Look at her... I'd die for her..." L said.

"I gathered that" Ryuk replied.

"I'd kill for her..."

"Oh? The detective would kill for his lover? You are dedicated"

It was more of a figure of speech, but in a dire circumstance L wouldn't hesitate to save you over someone else, even if it meant the other persons death.

"She's like a goddess of the night itself, I got so so lucky" L swooned over you.

"You're down bad" Ryuk laughed.

"Hey I married her for a reason, now you can either stand there and watch our boring talk about case matters or you can go do something else"

"I've heard enough about the case today, later"

Ok, he wasn't actually going to talk about case matters. You'd already gone over that, but L just wanted to get rid of Ryuk for a bit to be alone with you. He walked over to the bench where you sat, climbing over the back of it to sit beside you.

"Basking in the moonlight I see" he commented.

"Thinking..." you replied.

"About?"

"... everything"

He'd done that a lot recently as well, in this case he couldn't blame you. This was probably he closest you'd ever be to death before your time is actually up many years in the future. The case was interesting yes, but the risk of dying early was scary and bound to make anyone a bit anxious. With your deal made with Ryuk in place, you could rest easy knowing L was safe. Now you had to worry about the risk Light would try and kill you instead.

"I get that, this case isn't exactly what we expected" L sighed.

"You can say that again, I can't wait until it's over and we can go home. I miss the graveyard, I miss the orphanage" You replied.

Your words made L a little sentimental, he too missed the orphanage. He'd spent time away from it before but never this long. He worried for his successors and how they were getting on without you and him. He too, wanted this case as thrilling as it was to be over safely and to spend a night sitting amongst the gravestones of your fathers graveyard again.

"It's probably snowing over there at the moment, I'm sure the boys will be enjoying making snow demons and having ruthless snowball fights" L said.

"My father is probably spending his days brushing snow off headstones at this time of year" you chimed in.

All the sentimental talk of home got L wondering. What would you be doing after this case? Obviously taking more cases after a little break. But... other than that. Was your life going to be just cases and that's it? You'd known each other since childhood, fell in love, had rambunctious teen years, grew up and gotten married and now what? Cases and that's it?

Of course you both loved the detective work, it was your true calling in life to solve crimes. But it does get repetitive and draining after a while. Everyone needs breaks now and then.

"(Y/n) darling... what were we doing after this case wraps up?" L asked.

"Doing another one I guess. I mean of course we'll go home and take a little bre-"

"Is that it? Is cases all we'll do for the rest of our lives. We're brushing dangerously close to death right now and we're going to walk away from it and just... repeat the cycle?"

You got what he was saying. Yes you were detectives, but that was your professional life. Your personal life, your marriage, what came next? Would work truly just take over and you'd repeat the cycle of case after case with nothing else to do?

What was the next step for you?

"I mean... I dunno. What do you want to do?" You asked.

"I'm happy with whatever you desire, as long as you're happy I'm happy. This case has clearly stressed you out and I don't blame you, I worry about you dear. When we're done with it we should absolutely take a break in cases, but what do we do in that break? It's up to you"

He was leaving it all up to you huh? You really didn't know what to do. Your goal together had always been get married and solve cases. You've achieved both of those things, so now what?

"I mean... I don't know. What do you want to do?" You asked.

He thought for a moment, he seemed just as lost as you did. After your very close brushes with death on this case you were both filled with a desire to do something exiting, something extraordinary, something that made you appreciate life more.

"We could travel somewhere... but we already do that on cases so it wouldn't be much different" you said.

"Uh... we could build a house for ourselves near the orphanage so we can still see the boys and your father next door?" L suggested.

"I mean we could, it'd definitely be something fun for us to design our own haunted mansion. But we travel so much we'd only be there sometimes. We should definitely get a permanent house, but maybe something more modest since we travel so much"

That was one thing on the maybe list. A house, either build from scratch or bought and renovated would be fine. You'd be able to personalise it regardless, but it would be more of a side project since you'd only be there when you weren't travelling. In your pondering for something new and exiting to do, something that made you appreciate your lives more, there was one thing that came to L's mind... but he wasn't sure if you'd be on board.

"Well we have been married for years now, we're in our mid 20s so definitely old enough but it'd be all in you..." he began.

"Huh?"

"We could have a kid"

You thought for a moment. Starting a family would definitely be something very fulfilling and would absolutely be something sweet for L since he lacked one as an orphan. But it was obviously a lot of responsibility, a whole human child wasn't just something you can brush off once it gets boring like a toy or something.

"You... want to be a father? I thought we weren't fond of kids" you asked.

"I'm not, but if it was OUR kid it's a different story. Of course it's all on you since you'd be the one carrying and delivering it, unless we adopted. But I'm willing to be a father if you're willing to be a mother, we get to raise our own baby bat"

He was aware it was a big decision, and he didn't expect an answer right away. It was merely a suggestion for after the case ended, but you had to admit you were a little intrigued. On the up side you'd get to start a family with the man you adored, bring life into the world or help a child who needed a family, L who never had his own family would get to become the father figure he never had (until Watari picked him up that is).

But man... 9 months of pregnancy and a painful birth process was definitely off putting. As well as a major responsibility that was easing a child. Maybe adoption would be a better idea, an orphan adopting an orphan was rather sweet after all.

It was a thought choice.

"I'll have to think on that one. But it is very sweet to know you're willing, you'd be an amazing father... I'd have to keep you and the child away from too much sugar though" you giggled.

"I don't expect an answer right away, you'd be the one under the most pressure in that situation anyway and I'd never wish any stress on you. Either way, if you're happy I'm happy. Plus let's be honest here, if it's my kid there's no way you can hide the sugar from us. We'll track it down eventually" He replied.

"You're a thief. Not only of sugar but of my heart, mon cher"

"You aren't innocent either, thief of my heart. Guess that makes us partners in crime Cara mia"

Leaning in for a loving kiss under the stars, he tasted as sweet as his diet was. It was another one of those moments were time seemed to slow down and you dwelled in the warm, fuzzy feeling that was enjoying a romantic moment with your beloved husband. The night seemed so perfect...

And he'd definitely given you something to think about too...
