Chapter 12 | cafe test

"This is one of my favourite in the area, plus we're so out of the way here no one will give you a hard time about the way you sit"

You sat next to L, curled up as usual and across from Light. Light had suggested the cafe and you'd agreed to go for food. On the way you listened to the rather amusing conversation were L straight up told Light he was a suspect, and he denied it. Watching him deny while a shinigami was following him made you annoyed to no ends.

"I don't want to sit like this, I have to. If I sit normally my deductive abilities would drop by roughly 40%" L replied, seeing great a strange look from light.

You never questioned L's strange habits. They didn't hurt anyone and you knew full well the stuff he'd been through as a kid that shaped the way he is today.

"Don't question his habits. He's just like that" you snickered.

"You're one to talk, you have your habits" L replied.

"Yeah yeah, we're a strange duo"

You tried to listen in to the boys conversation, but when Ryuk is wandering around the cafe spying on people it's hard to keep your attention anywhere but on him. He was a strange creature that's for sure...

You had to act like you couldn't see him, but his constant moving was making it hard. You were really tossing up on when to tell L that you could see him. L knew something was bothering you, you'd been together so long that he knew everything about your and your body language. He trusted you, so he didn't ever push you to confess something since he knew it wouldn't be something that hurts him. But he was worried that whatever was bothering you that it was bad.

You wanted some kind of proof to show L that you were being serious. So you were holding out hope that a suspect would mention shinigami, or Ryuk would slip up and pick up an apple or something in front of people.

You felt bad not telling him, you never kept secrets form each other. But claiming to see a shinigami is quite the claim and something you wanted evidence of.

"Salem"

You snapped your daze away, eyes going from Ryuk wandering around the cafe to your husband.

"You're on another planet" he said.

"Sorry... tired. What'd I miss?" you replied.

"Nothing yet. Let's see if he can figure it out..."

Light was holding photo cards of the letters left by some of the victims. You remember L telling you about this challenge.

"Well... it'd be interesting to know Kira can potentially control a victims actions and made them write these. If you organise them like this... the first character of each like reads 'L do you know, gods of death love apples?" Light said.

Oh they did like apples alright. If watching Ryuks 'withdrawal' symptoms told you anything it was he was definitely addicted.

"Actually... there's print numbers on the back of those cards and if you've noticed. One is missing" L replied, pulling the last one out from his pocket.

This one was fake. You and L knew that. If Light was Kira so would he...

"It actually reads, L do you know gods of death who love apples, have red hands" L said.

"...but considering you only gave me three them I should be right?" Light replied, defensive.

"No, if you had figured out there were four then you'd be right"

Light seemed annoyed at L's trick, but didn't say anything about those feelings.

"You're right, I didn't think of that..." he caved.

You knew full well he was bullshitting. He knew that last one was fake, which is why he didn't think much of the numbers on the back. Ryuk following him around was proof he was Kira. Proof only you could see. You'd admit that L being in such close proximity to the man you KNEW was Kira  made you on edge. There was no way you'd leave the two alone together, you felt like if you did Light could potentially attack L or something.

"Anyway... I have to ask. Are you two dating or something? You seem close" Light asked.

You and L glanced at each other. Damn, how'd he figure it out? Then again, you're always together and have a similar style and attitude. You both knew denying it would do nothing since he clearly already figured it out. It was risky of you told the truth, and risky if you lied.

If you said no, he'd take that chance of knowing you we're together and now admitting it as a way of getting you and L alone since you'd have to act like you aren't together. But if you admitted it, he could try and use one of you ti get to the other.

At least with the latter option, you could protect each other since you could be together 24/7 without question.

Deciding to admit it, you stared daggers into Lights soul. Something that clearly off put him.

"Married actually. I know we look like living corpses but I have absolutely no plans on letting him or myself die. Whoever Kira is better count his days. Because I won't hesitate to go to the pits of Tartarus and back to bring a reign of bullets into Kira for even daring to think about harming him" you indirectly threatened.

Ryuk laughed at Lights slightly creeped out look.

"She's serious isn't she? Better not touch L or she'll summon demons on you" He chuckled to Light.

"You treat me like royalty don't you?" L replied.

"That's my thanks for you treating me like a queen" you smirked, holding out your lacy gloved hand for L to kiss the back of.

He did, of course. He'd never deny a chance ti kiss you. You were the only one that ever won his heart ever all.

"You're... protective then?" Light said.

Again, your death stare seemed to pierce through his skull.

"Very" you replied.

Before you could indirectly threaten him anymore, his phone went off.

"Oh? Hang on. Sorry" he said, picking it up.

L leaned into your ear, talking under his breath.

"I love when you threaten people for me" he smirked.

"I'll do it again and again for you my darling" you replied.

Killing the mood, L's phone went off too.

"Oh... that's mine this time?" He questioned.

Picking it up he listened to whoever was on the other end. Seemingly at the same time he and Light both perked up.

"Light it's your-"

"My father... he had a heart attack?"

Huh? He what?

It couldn't be Kira... otherwise he'd be dead. Plus, would Light kill his own father? Even if he would, this early in the case would be a bad idea for him.

Before you knew it, you were driving to the hospital he was in. Light slightly off put by your beloved hearse. When you made it to the hospital, you luckily found mr Yagami was still alive and ok.

"So doctors say stress was the only reason? Light asked.

"Yeah, the case as taken a toll on me. At first I worried it was Kira, but if I lived it couldn't have been" his father replied.

"Yes this case is proving to be a tricky one, take time off and heal. It'd be pointless for you to work in this state and make yourself worse" L said.

You didn't pay much attention to what the boys were saying, too busy watching Ryuk poke things around the room. That shinigami was distracting as hell that's for sure.

"Salem, you seem out of it"

You snapped back into reality, facing cheif Yagami who'd addressed you.

"Sorry, I'm tired today. Not all here" you replied.

"You've been doing that a lot, get some sleep tonight ok?" L said.

As much as you wanted to throw a flirty 'only if you come with me' at him, you held back in front of two other people.

"I will" you replied.

One last glance at Ryuk was all you could fit in before a nurse came in to tell you visiting hours were over. You'd have to try and get more information out of him another time. Standing outside the hospital, you'd found it had gotten dark in the time this had happened.

"Need a ride home?" You offered.

"My mum wants me to pick up something for dinner. I'll take the train" Light replied.

"Suit yourself"

Weather he was being serious or was creeped out by your death car or wanted to talk to Ryuk was beyond you, but hey. His loss of a free ride home.

You got into your car, leaving the boys to say goodbye, as they were occupied you made eye contact with Ryuk through the window and gave him the acknowledgment head nod, a sentiment he returned.

When L got into the passenger seat, you turned on the engine and began to head back to the hotel. This was certainly an interesting day...

"Go ahead. Say it" he said.

"What?"

"That flirtatious remark I can tell you held back on"

He knew you too well. And while the contents of that remark may not happen any time soon, you knew it would the second you were alone in that new taskforce building that was being done.

"Darling you know exactly what I was going to say. Do I even need to say it?"
