Moon Dance

The smokey green fog dispersed as you and Varian looked around at your new surroundings.
You were both back in the moonlit forest, dark branches like claws reached out to you. Crows called out into the night as Varian looked up into the canopy above, where the moonlight shined down on him.
The corpse boy let out a breathtaking gasp. You watched as tears almost seemed to form in the boy's eyes as he stared at the full moon above him.
" I've spent so long in the darkness, I'd almost forgotten how beautiful the moonlight is." He said in a small voice. He smiled as a pale blue butterfly fluttered above his head. You noted how it looked almost exactly like the one you had used for your planning sketch as it flew into the night.
The boy let out a deep sigh of contentedness as he stepped forward, the ripped fabric of his wedding suit flowing so gently behind him. He jumped and spun in the circle of trees, gracefully dancing and enjoying the night. Varian gently spun around you, his loving ice-blue eyes meeting your gaze. He continued his moonlit dance as you turned away from him, plotting the map of the forest out in your mind, figuring out which way the town would be. You were too deep in thought that you didn't notice as Varian tripped over a root and fell flat on his face behind you.
Varian lifted his head up from the ground as the maggot came from his ear, whispering at him.
" Hey- i think you dropped something." The boy looked behind him at his bone leg lodged in the root behind him. He saw that you were beginning to turn around, he quickly stood and grabbed his leg, fastening it onto his body.
As you turned you saw that the boy was standing there. What was he doing?
The boy started his dancing again with a 'hmph', as if nothing had previously happened. Varian delicately danced around a tree, making his way to you as he hummed a tune. He twirled around you again as you gently grabbed his shoulders to stop his spinning, placing him on a bench.
" I think I should..well um- prepare my mother and father for the big news." You told him, it was going to take a miracle to not make her family scream in terror at the boy, it was better for both of them to mentally prepare them first and explain the situation. " I'll go ahead first, and you...wait here." You gently explained. Varian looked at you with an excited gaze.
" Perfect!" He agreed.
" I won't be long." You said as you ran off into the forest, headed for your town.

You reached the Everglot mansion and ascended the steps as you gasped for air, you had ran all the way there in that heavy dress. You were almost ready to pass out. You ran your fingers through your h/c hair, attempting to fix it as much as possible. You dusted off your dress as much as you could before raising a hand to knock.
You stopped dead as you heard a voice in the mansion.
" Whenever I see that VanDort girl, I will strangle her with my BARE HANDS!" Mr.Everglot said as his wife locked the front door.
" Your hands are too fat, and her neck is too thin." Mrs.Everglot said as she rolled her eyes and locked another lock on the door. " You'll have to use rope."
On the other side of the door, you shrunk away with a gasp. You'd have to find another way in to avoid the Everglots.

Meanwhile, in the forest, Varian waited as he still sat on the tree stump. He sat hunched over, his hand on his cheek as he sighed. He was bored as can be.
" This is the voice of your conscience, listen to what i say. I have a bad feeling about that girl-" The corpse groom rolled his eyes as he sat up and knocked his head a few times, the maggot fell out of his head and shot into the snow.
" Go chew someone else's ear for a while." He spat bitterly. " Y/n has gone to see her parents. Just like she said." He sassily spoke as he crossed his arms and turned away.
" If I hadn't just been sitting in it- I'd say that you lost your mind!" The maggot angrily said as he wiped off snow from his head with his tail. Varian sighed annoyingly as he turned back to the small creature.
" I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason....for taking so long." He said as he dropped his arms to his sides. He looked down at the ground in thought.
" Oh, I am sure he does. Why don't you go ask her?"
" Fine, I will." Varian said as he stood.
" After all, she couldn't get far, with those cold feet." The maggot told him as he crawled to your set of footprints in the snow, that led to your town.

You walked around the side of the mansion, looking for a better entrance. You stopped at a pillar covered in thick vines. Your e/c eyes flickered to the top. Could you make it to the terrace? You began climbing.

Edwin sat in his room by the fireplace, sewing a quilt as he was deep in thought. He didn't see as you fell onto the terrace behind him outside, you yelped as you tripped over the stone railing. Edwin gasped at the noise. He turned as you knocked on the glass door, his eyes wide as he saw you. The teen smiled widely in relief as he quickly made his way to the door. You stepped inside quickly as he opened it. The boy studied you as you leaned on the door in exhaustion as he closed it.
" Edwin," You sighed as you caught your breath.
" Y/n?" Edwin asked hopefully with a smile. His brown hair as immaculate as ever. " I'm so happy to see you." His voice quivered as he bounced up and down. He grabbed your hand and led you to the couch in his room. " Here come by the fire. Where have you been? Are you alright?" He asked concernedly as you both sat.
" I...I-" You looked away. Edwin felt your hand. " You're as cold as death. What's happened to you? Your dress is ruined!" He pointed at the rips in your dress.
You knew you'd have to do some explaining before asking to see your parents as soon as possible.
" Edwin... I confess~ This morning, I was terrified of marriage." You told him honestly. Edwin looked at you with thoughtful eyes as he blinked.
" And, as I met you- I felt as if..." You took a breath. " I didn't...feel anything. I'm terribly sorry. It's not you, trust me. It's my own feelings." You gently told him. Edwin's deep brown eyes met yours. His expression was thoughtful and understanding, you knew he was sad deep down. He smiled compassionately. You both stood as Edwin held your hand.
" Oh Y/n, I'm glad you told me. I could never make you marry me if you didn't truly love me. I understand. Truly. Though- it wasn't even my idea in the first place." He reminded.
" I don't know what we'll do- but before we discuss that- I need to tell you something." You hurriedly said.
" Don't worry about it Y/n, It's time I stood up to my parents and stop being so reserved. I need to make my stand."
" Really? Well- that's easier said than done...knowing you." You said chuckling. He was very shy. The boy laughed as he hugged you.
" I'll try my best, but even if things don't work out, and our parents force the marriage- I'm fine being your friend, and not your husband." He informed you as he hugged you tighter. You smiled and hugged him back.
All of a sudden you sharply gasped as you saw a figure climbing over the stone railing on the terrace outside.
Varian. You had told him to wait in the forest!
Edwin almost turned his head but you quickly held it, making him look at you.
" Edwin please, you must listen to me. I came to talk to my parents. There is a dire circumstance, Edwin, please! You must understand. In the forest I became married to a corpse groom, I know it sounds positively insane but I beg of you, don't scream. He is behind you on the terrace right now and-" You hurriedly blabbed to him. Edwin looked at you with confused wide eyes.
You were interrupted as the doors to the terrace opened and you both looked to see Varian as his tie blew in the breeze. He came inside as he flipped his hair, his hairstripe glowing in the moonlight.
" Terribly sorry darling but I just wanted to meet-" He was cut short as he took in the scene of you standing next to Edwin. He gasped as his piercing blue eyes met Edwin's. Edwin gasped as well, but in sheer horror at the corpse boy.
You awkwardly looked between them. This was not how this was supposed to go.
Varian blinked and grabbed your arm affectionately. He didn't want to make any assumptions about the scene he had just found.
"D-darling, who..is this?" He asked cheekily as he looked Edwin up and down with a smirk, sizing him up. He was clearly marking his territory here.
" Who is he?" Edwin asked in a small voice, obviously terrified. Varian chuckled to himself as he held his hand out limply to Edwin cockily.
" I'm her husband." He said simply as he showed off the golden ring you had placed on his hand. Edwin stared at it as his jaw dropped.
" Uh...Y/n?" He asked as he cleared his throat, his eyes never leaving the ring.
" Edwin I tried to tell you-" You said. " He's dead. Look! See? I told you!" You explained as you grabbed one of Varian's hands, who was by the way, looking very smug about the way Edwin's jaw dropped, as you shook the bone of his hand in emphasis.
" After I ran from the altar I ran into the forest to practice my vows for our wedding and that's when-"
Varian's eyes ripped open as he heard what you said.
" WAIT A MINUTE! Altar? Our wedding? Were you engaged to him??" Varian cried out. You quickly tried to explain.
" Yes! Before I met you our parents had-" You were cut off as Varian grabbed his arm back from you and tightly grabbed your wrist.
His face was grave as his blue eyes now seemed acid blue in the moonlight. His voice dripped with venom as he whispered. " Hopscotch."
Your eyes widened. " Wait- no! VARIAN STOP!" He dragged you to the terrace as thunder roared in the clouds and crows cawed. Edwin put his hand out to you. " Y/n!" He yelled.
" Edwin!" You yelled back. " VARIAN WAIT!" You yelled at him. The boy didn't listen as you were both whipped into a tornado of crows, taking you back to The Land Of The Dead.

When you were both teleported back into Elder Gutknecht's library study, you found yourself looking into a very furious Corpse Groom. The boy pushed you away angrily as he narrowed his eyes.
" You lied to me!" His voice cracked with hurt. " Just to get back to that other man!" He crossed his arms as he turned away.
" Don't you understand? You WERE the other man. I was set to marry Edwin before I even met you! BUT LET ME EXPLAIN! PLEASE!" You begged.
" No!" He cried as he held back tears. " You're married to ME. HE'S THE OTHER MAN!" He said as he turned away and covered his face. He sobbed.
" He's got a point." Elder Gutknecht pointed out as he stood on his pedestal.
" And I thought-" Varian hiccuped as he wiped off his tears. " I thought this was all going so well!" He rolled his eyes as he continued to cry. You felt so helpless. You wanted to make him understand. That you were in love with him and not Edwin.
Varian quite literally cried his eye out as it popped out, rolling on the floor towards you. You picked it up. Varian hiccuped and tried to catch his breath as you cleaned off the eyeball on your dress, it was ruined anyway.
" Look- I'm sorry. But if you would just listen-" You said as you handed his eye back to the boy.
" Yeah right." He spat as he snatched his eye back as he looked at it.
" It's my eye...isn't it." He said sadly. He thought you resented him because of his eye-popping-out-with-the-maggot issue.
" No! Your eye is..quite lovely." You told him honestly as he put it back in.
" But Varian, think about it. You're dead." You tried to reason. " But still I-"
" Well you should've thought of that before you asked me to marry you." Varian bitterly said as he wiped his nose. You were mad. WHY WOULDN'T HE LISTEN?
" WHY CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND- IT WAS A MISTAKE! ALL OF THIS WAS!" You yelled harshly. Varian's eyes widened. He looked away from you. The boy didn't reply, all he did was sigh tiredly as he walked off, his eyes downcast.
You regretted what you said. None of what you said was seeming to make sense to the boy.
Oh, it's all so messed up. How do I explain it the proper way?

A/N: Heyo theatre kids! Since the Moon Dance scene is a very famous scene in the movie, here is the link to watch the real scene from the movie. Emily's ( the corpse bride ) dance is beautiful! It's hard to describe it in words. Even though she falls flat on her face, but don't we all?
