Junko: Here we go. Another story about a boy born and raised as a killing machine. Well as a boy, Jack lived in the turbulence and violence of the Liberian Civil War and was orphaned at a young age by Solidus Snake, who raised him as his own and groomed him to become a killing machine of a child soldier who gained the title of Jack the Ripper, or the White Devil, making quite the name for himself.

Monika: Eventually taken to the United States after Solidus abandoned him, Jack recovered from and repressed his years of trauma and was taken in by the Patriots. They used him as a soldier and had him participate in hundreds of simulations to hone his skills. During this time, he met his future wife, Rosemary, who was, in reality, a Patriot spy.

Junko: Well damn! Seemingly recruited into the defunct FOXHOUND, Jack was sent to the Big Shell to rescue the president and other hostages, used as a tool in the Patriot's S3 Plan and going under the badass codename, Raiden.

Junko: It doesn't take a genius to know that Raiden is a complete badass! He can cut through metal and steel with ease, even tearing through a Metal Gear RAY! He can even toss one in the air and cut its arm off mid-flight!

Monika: By comparison, a Metal Gear REX weighs 505 metric tons and RAY is bigger. He can even take on and cut down the even bigger Metal Gear EXCELSUS.

Junko: He's even got punched through the darn thing by the good ol' Senator Armstrong himself! He's tanked a beating from the Senator and even pierced through his nanomachine-hardened skin!

Monika: Raiden has tanked bullets and explosions. He's been thrown into clock towers and survived being stepped on by other giant robots. He's fast enough to run up walls, jump on trains, dodge bullets, and even slash at least ten times in one second.

Junko: The guys played hopscotch with missiles and some of the guys he goes up against can even dodge lightning! Seriously, there's no limit to how badass this guy is!

Junko: Though he initially seems naive, Raiden is a practiced killer who mastered the art of combat and murder at an early age, easily proving himself capable of matching experienced soldiers and even defeating his mentor and adoptive father, Solidus Snake, a master swordsman, in a one-on-one sword fight. We covered that guy before so you already know how tough he is. Raiden's skills also lend themselves well to espionage and infiltration, allowing him to sneak into the Big Shell and stay hidden for much of his mission. By the time of Metal Gear Solid 4, his sword skills had grown, showcasing an incredibly effective swordplay style that combines Capoeira's elements with more traditional styles like WuShu, Aikido, and Southern Dragon style kung fu.

Monika: This brings us to our next topic. Kokonoe, if you will?

Kokonoe: Right, let's go over his cyborg body.

Kokonoe: Raiden's mechanical body is a unique military garment with highly advanced electronic weaving technology and artificial muscle tissue that reacts to impacts and automatically contracts to diffuse damage, providing increased protection against slashing attacks. Its design minimizes underwater drag allowing for increased swimming speed, and clings tightly to Raiden's body, amplifying his endurance, strength, and recovery rate. It provides insulation that protects Raiden's body from toxins and allows him to operate in extreme climates and damp conditions. It also incorporates noise-dampening soles that will enable the user to run without making a sound. He has a Soliton Radar, a highly advanced radar system that utilizes electromagnetic waves originating from living beings to map out the location as well as provide live info on the position and field of view of enemy soldiers.

Junko: It can also see ghosts!

Kokonoe: He has an Anti-Personnel that can detect the heartbeats and electromagnetic fields of nearby lifeforms. But more important is his Solid Eye, a device worn like an eyepatch that grants him night vision and a capacity for binocular sight, though not at the same time. It allows Raiden to make out footprints easily and determine the emotional and mental states of others by recording their body temperature, heart rate, and sweat secretions. Oh yeah, he also has a highly advanced real-time communications system called a Codec. Raiden's Codec is nanomachine-based, allowing him to communicate through his nanomachines while remaining silent.

Monika: And of course, Raiden has Stealth Mats, Mine Detectors, Thermal and Night Vision Goggles, Binoculars, and... a Cardboard Box?

Junko: Oh come on Monika, we all know just how important that cardboard box is.

Monika: Okay... well he's also got a ton of weapons that he's picked up over the years, including Pistols, Rifles, Sniper Rifles, Grenades, Mines, C4s, and Rocket Launchers.

Junko: But most important is his High-Frequency Blade!

Kokonoe: Reinforced by a powerful alternating current and resonating at incredibly high frequencies, these blades disrupt atoms by creating quantum decoherence at the plank scale, making them exceptional weapons.

Junko: His original one was gifted to him by Olga, but he would get upgraded versions later on, like the Piercer Blade, Bloodlust.

Junko: Sundowner's twin blades, which can be put together to be utilized as a pair of giant, lethal shears. Lacking Sundowner's immense strength, Raiden can't use them as fast, but their capability makes them incredibly powerful in combat.

Monika: Then there's one of Monsoon's twin Sai, Dystopia.

Monika: This blade can be used as a thrown weapon or as a sort of makeshift EMP grenade that can short out enemy cyborgs

Junko: After that is Mistrals L'Etranger!

Junko: A polearm made out of Dwarf Gekko arms that can be used for rapid attacks, switching between its normal polearm state and a whiplike weapon!

Monika: Yet his most important weapon is the Murasama Blade.

Monika: During his battle with Armstrong, his regular blade shattered. But he managed to replace it with a new, stronger blade that once belonged to Jetstream Sam, whom he defeated in battle.

Junko: Gee, sound familiar?

Monika: This sword is much stronger and more durable than his regular HF Blade. Its sheath has a rifle mechanism and trigger that can be used to unsheathe the blade at high speeds for rapid attacks.

Junko: It also allows him to perform a Quickdraw!

Junko: A Japanese sword art that focuses on quickly drawing the sword from the sheath, by applying the principle of a katana being removed from its scabbard moves with much higher speed, precision, and power than regular motions. Counterattack is the primary purpose of this method, but nonetheless, this technique can be used aggressively to wage a preemptive attack against an unsuspecting or less mobile victim.

Monika: He has other techniques too, like his signature Blade Mode.

Monika: This "Blade Mode," drastically increases his reactions and combat speed to the point that his surrounding time seems to slow down, allowing him to make incredibly fast and precise slashes before his opponent can respond.

Junko: With this, he can even use his Zandatsu technique!

Monika: A unique technique used by Raiden to extract fuel cell electrolytes from enemy cyborgs and unmanned weapons. By targeting their weak points in Blade Mode, Raiden can grab their power cores and recharge his fuel cells and health instantly.

Junko: And that's not even getting into his ability to summon lightning!

Junko: Raiden can summon lightning through his body and use it to infuse his strikes! Or, if he wanted to, he could summon lightning from above and have it strike down at his opponents!

Monika: Still, he should be careful. Take too much damage, and Raiden can easily tap into his Ripper Mode.

Monika: A state that Raiden entered during the World Marshal Incidents. The name was derived from "Jack the Ripper," a nickname Raiden earned during his time as a child soldier in Liberia. It is Jack's other, very violent personality gained by his experiences as a child. After entering Ripper Mode, Jack becomes much faster and stronger, and his fighting style becomes more ruthless.

Junko: But not invincible.

Junko: Raiden does have a few weaknesses that should be taken into consideration. The guy suffers badly from PTSD. He's also somewhat arrogant and has a slightly hypocritical sense of morality that he uses to shield himself from his bloodlust which is relatively easy to tear down. He also struggles to come to terms with the part of his psyche that enjoys violence, which is why Jack the Ripper exists in the first place.

Monika: Right, Raiden can be a little careless at times, and his Blade Mode can only last for so long. But he'll continue to fight for what's right, even if it means breaking a few laws. He'll always fight for what he thinks is right.

Raiden: You're right. About me, I mean. I knew something was... off. After the Patriots, I thought I could walk off the battlefield and into a normal life. But here I am, surrounded by death, arguing philosophy with terrorists. I told myself this was about justice, about protecting the weak. But I was wrong. I learned young that killing your enemies felt good; Really good. In America, my friends, my family, they helped me forget the devil inside. But who am I kidding? I was born to kill!
