4 Things You Should Be Doing
Now that the forums are gone new writers may need some help from other writers with a following. There are proper ways to do this and some ways that are very wrong. I'll be highlighting the things you should be doing and adding some advice what not to do when asking for help.
Read
Find books within your genre and read like a crazy person. Learn from that writer and expose yourself to different kinds of writing. You may be attracted to first person points of view or third person, read other people's work to see how you would be more comfortable writing.
Read the comments in their stories. It'll give you some perspective on what readers like and don't like.
Read the writer's profile and find out if they welcome questions in a direct message. It doesn't hurt to ask questions and if they don't answer it's okay. Do not send a direct message to someone asking them to read your book. Especially if you've not been an interactive reader in their stories.
I received a message the other day from someone asking me to read their story. It happens a lot and it's very annoying. I asked them which story of mine they read, they lied to me and couldn't answer one question about my book. Using people isn't nice and the writer is busy enough. If you are lucky enough to have them read your story, it's probably because you've been a loyal reader and they recognize you from the comments and votes in their story. Read for read requests are usually not welcome if the writer has never interacted with you before on this platform.
Be respectful, I've had new writers tell me I "owe it to them" because I have followers and reads. That's one way to quickly get turned away.
Interact
Interact with other readers in the comments of other writer's books. This platform is a community and the best way to build a community is to make friends. Fellow readers, they will most likely visit your profile and see you're also a writer.
I've seen other writers see the most success by just engaging others in civil conversation.
Do not under any circumstances ever promote your work inside someone else's story!!!!
I've had other people do that to me and it's extremely rude. Your comment will be deleted and the writer may even mute you.
Be positive in all your comments and don't give writing advice if it's not asked of you. Point out the writer's strengths and thank them for posting their story. Become friends and let your username become a positive staple in all their chapters. Readers will become curious and so will the writer. You might be surprised when they offer you their help.
Be creative
Do you have a skill that would be useful to fellow writers? Maybe it's graphic art or the ability to make gifs and even book trailers. Offer those services to writers, but not just writers with a huge following. Interact with everyone you can because you never know when one of their stories will climb the ranks and get reads.
I know whenever I accept a cover or a book trailer I mention the artist in hopes of driving them to that writer's profile. Think of it as a form of payment for your time.
For editing services I give my editors the opportunity to have one chapter at the end of my book to promote their work. They might post the cover or even half of the first chapter, I really leave it up to them. The help is appreciated and I do try to give back to other writers.
Be Kind
Another thing I do for my friends is dedicate a reading list to them. This is reserved for friends that have been kind and I enjoy talking with them. I don't discriminate any genre, but it works best for writers that share my own genre. Don't wait until you're established to start doing this, you can start it now to gain respect from other writers. Don't just offer to help the big named writers on Wattpad, off to help anyone you can because kindness goes a very long way.
