Wednesday, December 20th, 1797

My Dearest, Theodosia,

                                                First, I wish to apologize for the time it has taken me to get back to you. As fore mentioned, now that I am studying law, it has taken up a large portion of my time and it means I no longer have the time I once did to write to you. Of course, I am trying to make time, but it is so difficult. Maybe we shall find a way to meet, despite all the difficulties it may be present.

Were you lying when you said you were tempted to make a list of excuses? If that is the case, then I wish to see this list. I wish to know the lies you are telling your father in order to escape him when we meet. You have only told me one of your excuses, but if you have a list, I want to be able to use some of them at least. Perhaps, if we both had excuses, we would be able to meet each other more frequently. After all, disappearing from our parents is the hardest thing we face.

Theo, I promise you that I shall try my hardest to avoid getting ill in the future, I do not feel as though I wish to face your wrath. I am sure it is terrifying.

My Dearest, Philip,

                                        Studying should always come first, Philip, so I expected the gap between our writings, though if you forget to write to me completely, I will find you. I can guarantee you that much.

How dare you accuse me of lying! When I wrote the letter, I did not have the list, but during the gap, I wrote one. Now, I am hardly going to share my trade secrets with you, how do I know you will use them correctly? Besides, you must come up with your own excuses if you wish for them be believable. Were our parents ever to talk to one another, we may be exposed, particularly if we use the same excuse at the same time.

You better keep your promise to me, because that is twice I have now threatened you and I do not wish to make it a third.
