Letter #45
Monday, April 24th, 1797
My Dearest, Theodosia,
Your advice will always have a strong place in my heart, I can assure you of that much. Even if we can never truly be together I shall treasure the letters we have written to one another and the advice you have given up. The time, or lack of, we have spent together will remain in my memory even if our parents continue to forbid us.
Though I doubt it will come to that. They shall see sense soon enough and when they do, we shall be together without the need for sneaking around. That is a day I look forward to and time in which we will finally be happy and together. That time cannot come soon enough and I am sure you feel the same way.
Alexander finds all these letters to be droll. He does not understand why we are risking so much just to talk to one another for only a short space of time. Of course, he is but a child, what is he likely to understand about all this? Very little if I am to judge him so harshly. Alexander finds love and anything to do with a love, a rather boring and pointless affair. He does not understand why someone would care so much about another when it will most likely end in heartache. I put it down to his age, but I suppose I shouldn't.
Why we were only young when we started talking, but I dare say it was not love, at least not then. We were simply pleased with the company of one another, a childish crush so to speak. It was only as time passed we realized the true feelings we hold for one another. It was like falling asleep.
Love Always,
Philip Hamilton

My Dearest, Philip,
You must not insult Alexander so, dear Philip, he is but a boy. I am sure he will realize what love is soon enough. It can strike us when we least expect it, as we have both experienced in the past. His time will come and when it does, I do not doubt you will remind him of his comments. That is less of an insult and more of a form of mockery, much more entertaining.
A childish crush that flowered into the love we now share. Even the smallest of crushes can lead to love in the long run, it is just patience that is needed. Patience and the will to do whatever it takes to succeed in love. As we have done. Father always told me that throughout our time we shall have many crushes, small moments of infatuation with others. I always thought him to be right, Mother said as much, but with you, I feel like I will never love another.
Love is indeed much like falling asleep, but some may say it is also similar to drowning. Drowning is often referred to as a dreadful way to die. It is slow, painful, but some say peaceful. Maybe that is what love is. It can be slow, it can be painful, but it is ultimately peaceful. Finding the person you wish to spend the rest of your life with. Many things can be compared to love, but none of it will ever be like the real thing. Only few have experienced real love.
We are a part of that few, Philip, and we always will be.
Love Always,
Theodosia Burr.

Notes;
This exchange holds no Historical significance. However, we can see that both Burr and Hamilton had noticed their relationship grow from a simple crush to something much more.
