Letter #4
Thursday, May 29th, 1794.
My Dearest Philip,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing of my Mother, Theodosia Bartow Burr. She passed yesterday afternoon, my Father and I by her side, as she would have wanted. We knew this was coming and tried to make her as comfortable as possible as the time approached.
The letters I have received from you during this time have done much to lift my spirits and I do not think I will ever be able to repay you for that. Thank you for being there for me when I had no one to turn to.
Yours
Theodosia Burr.

Notes;
It is well known that Theodosia Bartow Prevost (Burr) died on May 28th, 1794 after a two-year battle with a mysterious illness. To our understanding, and the understanding of many historians, she died with her husband and daughter by her side, this letter confirms this. Prevost's death largely affected her husband and it is likely to have affected her daughter in almost the same way, though we can understand from this letter that Hamilton's writings to Burr did much to help her through this time. All who have reviewed these letters find it odd that Burr states she had no one to turn to in regards to her Mother's illness. However, if her Father had been affected as we believe, it makes sense for Burr to believe she had no one to turn to.
Like the previous letters, we believe that several of Hamilton's letters were lost with Burr and were not passed on to Eliza Hamilton, as many were. We can gauge from this letter that Hamilton had written to Burr several times since learning of the decline in her Mother's health. Though these correspondence have been lost, it is clear that they meant a lot to Burr and may be the reason why she did not part with them.
