Letter #25

Sunday, January 1th, 1796

My Dearest, Philip,

                                        Almost four months have passed since I received your last letter and I must admit, it has concerned me. I understand you wrote to Father back in September, mentioning my lack of Summer adventures and how you thought what he was doing was wrong. Father informed me that he had written back, telling you to cut off all correspondence with me as he believes you are a negative influence on my life. Is this true?

What possessed you to write to him in the first place, Philip? You knew he was angry about our letter writing, yet you wrote to him anyway? I understand you are trying to look out for me, do what is best, but I do not think that approaching him was the smartest thing you have ever done. In fact, I think you have managed to make this situation worse. We were perfectly fine with writing to each other without our parent's knowledge, yet now Father refuses to let me out of his sight, in case I write a letter to you. I am lucky I was able to slip away to write this one.

Please write back, Philip. Though if you do not, I understand why and I shall not reach out again.

Love Always,

Theodosia Burr.

My Dearest, Theodosia,

                                                 I apologise for reaching out to your Father like I did, I know it was a foolish move on my behalf, but I could not allow him to continue the way he was. In your last letter, you sounded so sad about not having an enjoyable Summer and I thought it was my duty to do something about it.

During these past four months, I have debated whether or not to write to you as I knew your Father would be keeping an eye on your in order to stop us writing again. It was a foolish thing to do, I should have continued to write, no matter what he said and I feel bad that I did not.

How have the last four months been for you? You mentioned your Father is keeping an eye on you, is he still making sure you continue your studies? I am curious as to what has happened since we last spoke.

Write soon.

Love Always,

Philip Hamilton

Notes;

This exchange, although holds no historical significance, shows us that Hamilton took Aaron Burr's comments to heart and decided against continuing his letter writing. Looking back at the previous letters, it shows that Hamilton was a lot more apprehensive to go against his Father's wishes as Burr showed no hesitation in defying her Father after she approached him about her letter writing to Philip.
