Letter #16

Monday, March 30th, 1795

My Dearest Theodosia,

I must admit that your previous letter not only surprised me, but largely entertained me, though I expect that was your intention. To find out your Father has denied us permission to see each other, well, that was surprising. From what you have said, I was more than certain he would be more lenient, you stated he was most likely aware of our letters, but has said nothing. For him to attempt to stop all communication between us is odd, and dare I say a little unsettling. Nothing has happened between my Father and yours in a while not to my knowledge anyway. Why he would suddenly change his mind, I do not know.

Despite this, your last letter did manage to put a smile on my face. Your humour about this situation is largely welcoming and I am glad you can find a way to make a distressing situation comfortable. I am happy to announce that I am willing to keep up our letter writing, despite your Father's comments. Though I expect that if I had given you the other answer, you would have continued to write me. Our communication may continue, through it must be carried out with more secrecy than we have done. But I am certain we will be able to do that, we have gone this long and my Father is none the wiser.

Until next time Theo.

Yours,

Philip Hamilton

My Dearest Philip,

My Father's mind is a place I try my hardest to avoid wherever possible, so why he may have dramatically altered his opinion on our communication, I do now know, and it is unlikely I will ever find out. I am sure it will pass in time, and until then, our communication must be become all the more secretive. After a year of doing so, I am more than certain we can maintain the level of secrecy, though Father has become increasingly interested in my activities outside of studies.

I am glad my humour in my last letter was able to bring light in this situation and I sincerely hope I can continue to create humour whilst we wait for this to pass.

Apologies for the length of this letter, Father is watching me like a hawk.

Yours,

Theodosia Burr
