Letter #1

Thursday, January 30th, 1794

Dearest Theodosia,

                                           Father has said we are not allowed to see each other on the grounds of his disagreements with your Father. He believes it to be improper for me to communicate with the child of the man who toppled Grandfather from the senate. Mother has tried to set him straight, but he will not listen, he, as always, believes his way is the right way and refuses to see it any other way. I am sure you have been told the same thing.

However, I have managed to find a loop-hole in his command. He said we were not allowed to see each other but said nothing on writing letters. I am sure this form of communication will not last and that we will be allowed to see each other again soon.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours,

Philip Hamilton.

Notes;

Judging by the date of the letter, we have determined this to be the first in a series of exchanges, though we are sure the two participants had met prior to these letters being written. Philip Hamilton states that he has been forbidden to see Theodosia after Aaron Burr won his Grandfathers senate seat. However, this is an event that occurred three years prior to the letter being sent, of course we have no official explanation. It is possible, though, that it was in 1794 that Hamilton discovered what his son had been getting up to and used the loss of the senate seat as an excuse. We know that the senate seat loss was the event that started Hamilton and Burr's feud off, but we believe that small incidents since then may have caused the final decision to be made.

Unfortunately, Theodosia's reply has either been misplaced or was lost when Philip died, so we do not know if Burr ever said the same thing to her, or how she was feeling over being forced to stay away from Philip. This is the first in a series of letters that were lost after the death of both participants.
