42 - A day at work

Jimin gasped in horror. "You're going?!"

"I'll be fine, Jimin," I tried assuring him, holding his hands tightly. "I won't take long, I'll just grab my job description and stuff and leave immediately after that, okay?"

I started walking out of the hotel room, but he grabbed my wrist, stopping me. I looked back at him to see his face twisted in worry.

"I'll come with you."

I couldn't say no to him so I nodded. In fact, I was relieved that he was coming with me. I had to at least sign my documents for my work today since I didn't go there yesterday and if I were to be honest, I was actually dreading going out today.

We both walked out together and soon arrived at the police department.

"I'll stay here," Jimin said and kissed my temple. "When something happens, call me. Or just think about me, okay?"

I nodded and walked up the stairs, leaving him at the lobby.

"Lyn," my uncle called when I entered his office, and ran up to me for a hug.

"Hey, uncle," I muttered softly.

He pulled back to give me a sorrowful look. "I'm sorry for what happened to Rena..."

I pursed my lips as my gaze fell to the floor.

My voice quivered as I whispered, "It was her decision... I should... respect that..."

A piercing silence filled the room and I clenched the fabric of my jeans as my chest squeezed in pain.

He hugged me again and my tears welled up as he rubbed my back soothingly.

"She's in a better place now," he whispered while caressing my head.

I hummed, whimpering a little.

"Sir, they called you to- Oh."

Someone suddenly walked in, and I broke the hug to turn around and saw my boss looking at us surprised.

"Evelyn," he chimed, smiling at me, "are you here to start working today?"

I blinked away my tears to properly face him. "I'm sorry but I don't feel good today either... I'll be sure to start working next week. For today, I came here to sign my documents. Is that okay?"

He reluctantly nodded. "I see... Well then, follow me, Evelyn." He turned to look at my uncle. "And they're calling you down at the confinement cells."

"Alright," my uncle sounded and shuffled towards his desk.

I followed my boss to the human resource department room downstairs where four people wearing uniforms sat around a round table, discussing some matters.

"Guys," he exclaimed, making them turn their heads to my direction. "Our new employee is here to sign the documents."

"So, we all are looking forward to working with you, Evelyn."

I smiled at all of them. "Likewise."

"Well then, I'll see you on Monday morning," my boss said with a small smile and shook my hand. "Rest well before then."

I thanked him and walked out of the room and through the long hallway.

That went well...

My smile faded when a siren suddenly blasted throughout the building, signaling that someone escaped from the confinement cells.

This doesn't happen that often...

The fact that I was walking in an empty hallway not far from the cells, alone, wasn't helping me calm down my beating heart.

Just then, a conversation played in my head and I gasped out loud.

I should find uncle! He was going to the cells!

Running to the far end of the hallway, I opened the door to the emergency stairs and ran down as fast as I could to the confinement cells.

Whipping out my phone, I dialed his number with my shaky hand and brought it up to my ear.

My heart was freaking out, my whole body trembling as if it was electrified. The thought of something happening to my uncle was accelerating the violent pounding of my heart.

My breath hitched when he took it after one ring.

"Lyn! Where are you?!"

I gasped when a strong hand gripped my arm and the another one held a knife around my neck. My phone slipped out of my grip due to the impact of my back hitting something hard and crashed on the tiled floor.

"One wrong move and your blood is spilled all over this place, girlie," the unknown man rasped with a rough tone. "Keep going."

With shuddering breaths and trembling legs, I slowly walked down with him still holding the metal against my neck, following me from behind.

Jimin... please help me...

Swallowing the screams that were forming in my throat, I could only hope for him to hear my thoughts and appear somewhere near me. All this was way too sudden.

I stopped on my tracks when the feeling of the blade disappeared. Turning on my heels, I cautiously looked back to see the man stabbed in his heart, bleeding on the ground.

Above him stood Jimin who was panting and glaring at the body with pure hatred.

After seeing me trembling, he rushed towards me and hugged me tightly just before my knees buckled.

I really thought that I was going to die...

"I'm sorry for being late, I don't know why, but I couldn't seem to hear your thoughts or teleport to where you were," he whispered breathlessly, caressing my head, trying to hush my whimpers. "You're alright now, my love. You're fine now."

I buried my face into the crook of his neck, panting softly. Clutching his shoulders, I stammered, "Get me out of here, please."

He nodded and pulled back to wipe my tears.

But then, all of a sudden, two men dressed in the same suit as the one Jimin used to wear appeared on either side of him and grabbed his arms, tearing him off from me.

"Lyn," Jimin yelled, wide eyed, trying to reach for me as they dragged him further away.

Before I could reach him, all three of them disappeared into thin air.

No...

I couldn't believe it.

They took him...

T-They took him away...

I dropped to the floor, panting heavily.

No no no... Jimin...

"Lyn," my uncle called out and ran towards me, checking my state. "Oh my gosh, are you alright?"

I shook my head repeatedly, sobbing uncontrollably.

"No! I'm not fine! I'm not fine at all!"

This can't be happening!

This is all my fault!

All... my fault...

I ran out of the building and to my dorm, not caring about the aching of my feet, to search for the suit I got from Jimin. Luckily, it was tucked away in a suitcase, so it wasn't damaged.

I quickly wore it and wiped my tears, fixing myself. My phone rang and I took it when I saw that uncle was calling me.

"Lyn, why did you suddenly run out of the place? Where are you? Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, uncle. I just need to do something real quick, don't worry. Talk to you later."

I hung up and started gathering my mind.

Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes, imagining the underworld, creating the images from my memory. I had no other way.

If I entered that place once, I can do it again if I really concentrate.

I must.

I have to do this!

Someone bumped into me, causing me to open my eyes and I was shocked to see a woman in suit looking at me surprised.

"Oh, sorry. I didn't see you there."

"Oh no, it's my fault," I managed to let out. "I'm sorry."

After she walked away, I looked around me and a huge smile took over my features. The tall buildings, the dark sky, and the reapers hustling and bustling about.

I did it...

I came back to the underworld.
