23. Fall
"Dawn." Cor said with a frown as he prepared to leave. I cupped his cheeks.
"Such beautiful eyes." I said. He held my hands gently.
"I never stopped loving you, Cor. I want you to know that." I said and kissed his lips. He leaned in to the kiss. Nostalgia washed over me. I missed this man. I missed him so dearly. I wish I could have married him. I wish he could have been Prompto's dad. I wish for so much with him, but it will never be so.
We pulled away slowly. Cor frowned at me again.
"Look after my son." I said. He nodded.
"I will." He said. I reached up and pulled the tattered, tanish brown ribbon from my hair.
"If I don't survive... give him this." I said and place the ribbon in his hand. Cor pulled me in to another heated kiss that I accepted.
"I love you, Dawn. Please. Don't die on me." He said.
"Have I ever been one to make a bet I couldn't win?" I asked. He gave me another soft kiss.
"No." He said.
"Don't doubt me now, aye?" I asked. He kissed me again. This one was needy. Begging me to stay with him.
"Don't linger for another minute. Go." I said.
"Dawn, wait." Cor said. He pulled me back to him.
"After this is over, marry me." He said. I blinked at him.
"I love you now as much as I did when I first asked you. More even. Marry me." He said. I kissed him softly.
"If we both come out of this, buy a tux." I said. He kissed me again.
"I love you, Cor." I said.
"I love you, Dawn." He said.
"Go, my love." I said. He finally released me and left. It took him amoment to turn away, but he did. I watched him go, then turned to face my assignment.
"Lady Lunafreya, welcome back to Insomnia." I greeted with a bow as Lunafreya exited the car she was in. She bowed her head to me.
"Dawn Caramella. It's wonderful to be back. I'm glad to see you again. How is your son?" She asked.
"He is well. Thank you." I said.
"Lady Lunafreya, this is Nyx Ulric. He will serve as your body guard as you are here." I said. Nyx stepped forward and bowed to the Oracle.
"Lady Lunafreya." He greeted.
"Hello, Nyx. Thank you." She said. Nyx escorted Lunafreya to her seat in the throne room for the signing. I walked towards my post.
Where the hell was the chancellor? He was late. Very late. I sighed.
"The chancellor is in the throne room now." A voice behind me said. I turned and faced him.
"Commander. If you were hoping to catch a glimpse of Miss Schwartz, she's already on her way to Altissia with His Highness." I said.
"I was merely reassuring you." He said.
"Thank you, but I will be tending to my post now. It's in your best interest to report back to the throne room for the signing. I'm sure your presence will be quite missed, Commander." I said. He nodded and turned.
After Ravus had excused himself, I turned back to my post and watched the skies.
Just as Regis called it. Dreadnoughts of the Niflheim army floated over the city. I heard a guard approach from behind me.
"You're away from your post, glaive." I said.
"Apologies, Mercy. His Majesty requested you in the throne room." He said.
"Very well." I said and turned. He walked behind me and I entered the throne room. I took my place beside Clarus. He nodded to me and I returned the gesture. Regis nodded to me and I nodded back.
Ideolas approached and stood beside Regis, Ravus at his side. I stood at attention beside Clarus. Nyx stood by Lunafreya's side.
"By The will of Ramuh, I hope you live through this, Nyx. You're a good man." I thought.
"Friends. Today marks a glorious occasion." Regis started.
"Today, through this signing of our treaty, we finally achieve peace between the Empire of Niflheim and the Kingdom of Lucis. May we rejoice in this union." Regis said.
Ideolas and Regis stood side by side by the treaty. I saw Ideolas's eyes move to Regis.
In a blink, Ideolas had pulled a gun on Regis and Regis drew his own gun. Clarus drew his sword and I summoned forth my pistol as an imperial soldier aimed his rifle at me.
"So, this truely was a farce." Regis said.
"Surely you understand, Regis. Your son has a will as strong as yours. And you put up quite the fight thirty years ago. It seems history would be to repeat itself. Thirty years ago, you, a mechanic, a young soldier, a cook, a guard and then later a scout set on the road. And now, your son, his advisor, the son of your guard, and the son of the young soldier and scout set out. Oh my, Regis. You foresaw this?" Ideolas asked. I turned my eyes to look at Ideolas.
How the hell did he know about Prompto? He couldn't have possibly known unless...
"By the six... my son is a target!"
"And you sent away the dear prince and a crew able to repeat the past in advance. With the hope of getting a foothold. Unfortunately, a card you need is in my hand. The Oracle! Now!" Ideolas ordered. Imperial troops raised guns at Lunafreya.
"Nyx! Get her out of here now!" I ordered. Nyx grabbed Lunafreya and cast a barrier to shield them from the bullets. I pulled the trigger on my pistol at the same time the imperial soldier with his rifle on me pulled his.
My aim was better than his as his bullet grazed my cheek and mine met it's mark in his throat.
Ideolas pulled the trigger on his pistol and Clarus threw up a barrier in time. I rushed forward, trading my gun for my sword and quickly deflecting the young commander's strike at Clarus.
Every thing became a blur. Ravus dissapeared in to the chaos. I cut down countless magiteks and imperial soldiers.
"Dawn!" I felt Clarus shove me away. I turned and quickly sliced through a magitek.
I saw a glaive turn and stab a sword through Clarus.
"CLARUS!" I screamed. Clarus coughed and fell. I summoned a dagger that I had finally gotten the hang of using and threw it. Finally using the power Regis granted me as a Kingsglaive, I warped to the traitor and slit his throat. I turned and knelt by Clarus.
"Clarus." I said.
"My son... and Daughter... protect them..." Clarus coughed and closed his eyes, not giving the Niffs the satisfaction of watching his life fade. I placed my hand on his shoulder.
"May the gods guide your soul to the everlasting paradise in the afterlife my friend." I said. I stood and ran towards Regis as another turncoat stood behind him.
"REG!" I screamed in warning, but I was too late. I saw the blade pass through Regis's chest.
"NO!" I screamed and warped to the traitor.
"It's for the better! Have mercy!" The screamed.
"The only Mercy I can offer you is death it's self. Burn in Ifrit's fire, you traitorous bastard." I said and removed his head from his shoulders.
"Mercy!" I heard Nyx call as he ran to Regis's side. I turned.
"Why the hell are you not with Lunafreya?!" I asked.
"She's safe, but we need to get his majesty out of here!" He said. I nodded.
"With me, Ulric!" I called and began to fight my way out of the throne room. We were away from the chaos. We made it to Lunafreya quickly. She reached out and pressed her hands to Regis's wound.
"Don't waist your abilities on me, my dear. Save it for those who truely need it." He said.
"Your majesty..." Lunafreya said.
"Reg." I said.
"It's far too late for me, dear. I've done all I can. I leave the rest to you and my trusted glaives. I know at least Dawn and Nyx remain faithful." Regis said. I reached over and took his hand.
"I'm not leaving you like this, Reg." I said.
"You must." He said.
"I refuse." I said.
"Dawn, my last order as your king. Evacuate the citizens and ensure their safety. I may fall, but as long as my people live, the kingdom of Lucis still lives." Regis said. Tears filled my eyes.
"Reg." I cried.
"Go, Dawn. Get Lunafreya out of here. Get the citizens out. Protect our sons. They are the next to rule." He said. I closed my eyes and rested my head on his.
"As you wish, my King." I said.
"Lady Lunafreya... the ring of Lucii on my finger. Take it. Ensure it gets to my son." Regis said. Luna nodded and took the ring from Regis's hand.
"Your Majesty!" Nyx cried.
"I leave Lunafreya to you, Nyx. Deliver her from this city." Regis ordered.
"Reg, I can't leave you here. You need to have a proper burial." I said.
"That will come with my son's return, Dawn. You concern yourself with our people." He said. I hugged Regis. My final goodbye to my friend.
"Thank you, Dawn. For all you have done. May the six guide you." He said. His eyes closed and he died. I laid his body to the ground as Lunafreya cried for him.
"May the six guide your soul to the everlasting paradise of the afterlife, my friend. I will see Noctis on the throne or die to get him there." I said. I closed my eyes.
"By Ifirit's Fire, I release you. By Leviathan's waters, I cleanse thy soul. By Shiva's love, I send you to the gods. By Ramuh's will, your soul will know peace. By Titan's strength, I raise thee to the heavens. By Bahamut's mighty sword, I raise your name to glory. By the six Divines of Eos. I send you to your fate, may you rest in eternal peace." I said the final prayer for Regis.
I stood and turned.
"Our king gave us our orders. We better carry them out, aye?" I said. Nyx nodded and we continued forward. We were intercepted by Ravus. What made my blood boil was Regis's sword in his hand.
"You carry what doesn't belong to you." I said.
"I say the same to you." Ravus said.
"Ravus, stop this! This will not bring peace! It won't revive mother and father!" Lunafreya called out.
"You are a traitor, sister. You side with those responsible."
"It was Niflheim that killed our parents!"
"And Regis could have stopped them and yet he ran! He ran with his fool son and left them to die! Left us to Niflheim!" Ravus yelled back.
"We could do nothing. If his majesty had fought that day, he and Noctis would have both died and all would have been lost. Our world plunged in to darkness. Daemons claiming our lands, our lives. Is that would you would have?" I asked. Ravus growled and ran at me with Regis's sword. I deflected easily with my Katana. Nyx dodged, protecting Luna and drawing his knives.
"You know, even though his majesty himself could never defeat me with that sword, you're worse with it than him." I said.
Ravus lunged at his sister. Nyx caught him, but he was able to rip the ring of Lucii from her.
"Now you will bow before me." He said.
"Don't-!" I warned, but he jammed the ring on his finger. He screamed out in pain. His arm ignited on fire.
"The past Kings of Lucis reject you and your pride. None bow to you, and you lose your arm or your life. I could leave that to the kings, but I am known as Mercy." I said. Nyx grabbed his arm as he continued to try to use the ring. With a swift slice of my Katana, I removed Ravus's arm. He fell to his knees, screaming as Nyx took the ring and Lunafreya's hand. We ran further.
"My apologies, lady Lunafreya." I said.
"If you did not, He would have died. You granted him mercy." She said. I nodded to her.
"Nyx, I leave Lady Lunafreya's safety to you. I will evacuate the citizens from the city and meet you and the other loyal glaives after the smoke has settled." I said. He nodded.
"May Shiva guide you." He said.
"May Bahamut protect you." I said. With that, I ran in to the city.
