17. The Start

Two years later.

"Mama!" I heard. I opened my eyes and smiled at the three year old as he ran in my room.

"Hey, baby." I said with a soft smile. He stared up at me. Blue eyes filled with tears. I placed my hand on his head.

"Hey, don't cry. I'm alright, Baby boy." I said.

"Mama gots an owie." He said. I rubbed his head.

"I'm okay, my owie will go away in no time. Were you good for Cor while I was gone?" I asked. He nodded, his blonde locks bouncing on his head as he did.

"He let me watch Chocobos on the TV and we play Justice Monsters!" He said. I smiled at him.

"You did?" I asked.

I had been on a scouting mission outside Insomnia. Magiteks were roaming our lands illegally and I took care of the problem, getting injured in the process. Thus the reason I currently laid in the hospital.

Cor lifted Prompto from the ground and placed him in the bed with me.

"You got reckless again, didn't you, Dawn?" He sighed.

"Not as reckless as I would have liked." I said. He sighed and closed his eyes.

"Dawn." He sighed. I grabbed his hand and he looked at me.

"I'm here, Cor. The problem was taken care of, and I'm home and alive. That's what matters." I said. He sighed and held my hand.

"You scared me to death, Dawn." He said softly. I smirked.

"I'm not going anywhere. Not while this little guy is waiting for me." I said and hugged Prompto. Prompto returned my hug.

"Mama..." he sniffed.

"Don't worry, baby boy. I promise I'll always come back." I promised. He looked up at me. I smiled down at him and wiped his tears away.

"I wuv you Mama." He said and hugged me.

"I love you, too, baby boy." I said and cradled him to my chest. He hummed softly and closed his eyes. I stroked his hair. I felt Cor press a soft kiss to my cheek. I smiled at the man I loved. He smiled back at me gently.

Prompto sat on the floor of the kitchen, playing with a couple of his toys after lunch. I smiled as I watched him. I reached over and touched my bandage.

That's when it really hit me. There could be a day when I go out on a mission and not come back. I could end up leaving Prompto alone with no idea who I was. But what could I do? I couldn't just quit the crownsguard. But I couldn't leave my baby with nothing like my mother had with me.

I stood up and headed to my home office. There was a blank leather journal in there. It was pretty thick. I could write my entire life in that for my son.

I found the journal easily. I pulled my switch blade from my pocket and carved in to the leather.

Dear Prompto

I sat down and started to write my explination of writing the book.

Suddenly, a loud clatter echoed from the kitchen and I was on my feet. I heard Prompto start crying. When I entered the kitchen, the pan that had been on the counter was on the ground and there was a red mark on Prompto's head. I dropped to my knees and scooped my three year old up. I rubbed his back as he sobbed in to my shoulder.

"Mama... owie..." he cried. I shushed him.

"It's okay, baby. Mama's here." I said. I grabbed the ice pack from the fridge and wrapped a towel around it and pressed it to his head. He sniffled and cried until he fell asleep. I frowned.

"My poor baby boy." I whispered. I gently kissed his head and carried him to his bedroom and placed him in his toddler bed. I sat with him as he slept soundly. He most likely had a concussion.

"Dawn?" Cor called.

"Sshhh." I replied. He stepped in and looked at Prompto.

"What happened to his head?" Cor asked softly.

"He climbed the counter for something and dropped a pan on his head. He probably has a concussion now. My poor baby boy." I said softly, stroking the toddler's cheek. Cor knelt down beside the bed and looked at him.

"He'll be okay, Dawn. Just a bump. A bruise will probably form and be there for a couple of days, but he'll be alright." Cor said. I nodded and stroked my baby's cheek again. I leaned over and kissed my baby again. He sighed in his sleep.

"Go ahead and stay with him, Dawn. I'll work a full day." Cor said. I nodded. Cor stood up and pecked a kiss to my cheek and left again. I sat there and watched Prompto until he woke up.

"Mama..." he whined. I smiled at him.

"You're okay, baby boy." I said softly.

A few months later.

I sat in my office, humming softly to keep my sanity as the day was starting to come to an end.

"Mama!" A little voice called out. I looked up as my son came running in to my office. I smiled as he ran over and crawled up my lap.

"Hey, little one. Did you have a good day with Cor?" I asked. He nodded happily.

"We went to the park and I played on the slides!" He said happily.

"You did?" I asked with a smile. Cor watched from the door. I rolled my eyes and motioned him in with my head. He smirked and walked in. He stood behind me and kissed the back of my head.

"Prompto, do you have something to give your mother?" He asked.

"Oh, yeah!" Prompto said. He reached in to his little back pack and pulled out a small box.

"Happy birthday, Mama!" He said with a bright smile. I blinked and checked my calendar.

July 31.

It was my birthday.

"For me? Thank you, sweety!" I said. I opened the box and smiled at the little necklace with in. It had a cute little Chocobo on it.

"Aww, Thank you, baby. I love it." I said and kissed his cheek. He giggled and hugged me. I pulled the necklace on, Cor helped me clasp it behind my neck. Sneaky bastard kissed my ear in the process.

"Is you're turn, Cor!" Prompto said. I cocked an eyebrow at him. He shook his head.

"It's not as good as Prompto's, but." He said and handed me a tiny bag. I opened the bag and pulled out a tan ribbon.

"It should hold your hair back better than that old red strip you use." He said. I smiled up at him.

"Thank you, Cor." I said. He smiled and kissed my cheek.

I always wore that ribbon. I never got rid of it.

Two years later.

Prompto's POV

I ran home from school. Mama was working late tonight. I was a little late coming home from school since my teacher was telling me I had to stop looking at my classmate's papers.

It wasn't my fault I couldn't see the board. It was too far away.

I held my Chocobo lunch box close and my back pack bounced off my back. My rain boots splashing the water of puddles. I giggled and jumped in another puddle.

"What a cute little kid." I heard. I gasped and turned. A big man stepped closer to me. I stepped back.

"What's a tiny kid like you doing out so late at night, huh? Don't you know it's dangerous?" He asked with a grin. I held my lunchbox tightly.

"Not much of a talker, are ya?" He asked. I bumped in to the wall of a building behind me. I whimpered. The man grinned wider.

"What a cute noise." He said. He knelt down and reached for me. I held my lunchbox tighter.

"Hands off the kid, Scout." A voice echoed off the walls. The man, Scout, turned and looked at the alley by me.

"Well, I'll be damned. The BAR queen of legend. Primal." Scout said.

"Cute you still call me that, Scout. I'm retired and you know that." The woman, Primal, said. I didn't move. I just wanted Mama.

"Back away from the kid, Scout. He's just a baby." She said.

"So were you when you started." Scout said, reaching for me again. Primal kicked him in the shoulder and he fell back. Primal stood in front of me. I looked up at her. Her back was to me, but I could see she had auburn hair.

"So you think it's okay to grab babies off the street and throw them in the ring? Is that what Animal taught you?" She asked. Scout growled and stood up.

"You gonna fight me for him, old lady?" He asked.

"You want me to beat your ass the way I beat your father's ass?" She asked. I heard shuffling.

"You can't beat me, you're retired. I'll beat your ass, Primal." He said.

"Don't make me put you in prison, Scout. But then again, you might want to see daddy." She scoffed. Scout lunged for her and I closed my eyes.

"Mama..." I thought, starting to cry. I heard the two fight and I held my lunchbox tighter, wishing for my Mama.

"Hey. You can open your eyes now. It's okay." A soft voice said. I opened my eyes and looked up. Mama was kneeling in front of me. I realized that the woman that Scout had called Primal was my mom. I looked over her shoulder and saw Mama's special friend, Cor, arresting Scout.

I sniffled. Mama wiped away my tears and smiled at me.

"No need to cry, little one. You're safe now." Mama told me. I dropped my lunchbox and jumped in to Mama's arms and started to cry. Mama hugged me tight.

"Mama..." I cried in to her chest.

"It's okay, Chocoboy. You're okay." She said. She picked up my lunchbox and lifted me from the ground. I hugged her tight and sniffled.

"How about we go to the Crow's Nest?" She asked. I nodded.

Dawn's POV

I set down my pencil as I finished recording today's events for Prompto. I shut the journal and stood up. I walked in to my son's room. I knelt down by his bedside as I did every night now. I stroked his hair away from his face.

"Sweet dreams for my little angel." I whispered.
