Dear Prince Arthur

A sequel to
The Princess and The Princess

👑

"You're our precious son Arthur. We only want what's best for you."

The same words, every single time. Dinner these days was never about bonding or laughing or recounting the day. It was all about silent warnings. Warnings that said not to do what his sister had. Warnings not to shame the family name like his sister had.

It had been months since Leonora had run away with Princess Valia and ever since then it was as if the king and the queen were determined to watch their son's every single move. Scared that they would lose him. Not their little boy, but their only heir to the throne.

Oh how lovely the old times had been, when they were all still one happy family. When Arthur had to compete for his parents' attention and love with his little sister. All days spent laughing and chasing each other around the castle. Everything was perfect up until the king and queen decided Leonora was no more worthy of their love. Now their only focus was on their son.

Ironic how he used to crave their attention but now, he'd do anything to not have to have it.

Leonora was brave, she knew exactly what she wanted and was never ashamed of it.

Arthur was the opposite of her when it came to bravery. Leonora could stand up to their parents. Arthur simply could not.

Leonora, even though imprisoned, was free in her spirit and mind.

Arthur, even though free, was imprisoned in his own mind.

Leonora could have whom she loved. Arthur...he could not.

He could never. He was the only one his parents had and he could never, never, allow his parents to ruin his sister like they had ruined him.

Everything his sister was, he wasn't. Just like their parents wanted. Their perfect son being everything they want like a mindless drone.

They had no intention to teach him how to run the kingdome how he sees fit. They intended to brainwash him until he saw things the way they saw them.

"We have decided that Princess Mariana is the best match for you. She will be arriving in the kingdom by tomorrow, you are to give her absolutely all of your attention. Your princely duties will be taken care of by your father and me." The queen told him, no, commanded him as the prince sat down for dinner.

"Yes your Majesty." The prince answered. It was always as simple as that. Yes your Majesty.

"What happened with Valia was not your fault Arthur, your sister corrupted her. In fact it's only good that she's gone. No more scandals to worry about." The queen spoke sharply.

"Yes your Majesty."

"If I'm being honest I have always preferred Princess Mariana to her since the start. Nobody blames you for what happened with Valia. However, if the wedding is cancelled this time round, it is only natural that the fingers would point at you. Hence, I hope you understand how important it is that you give Princess Mariana your best."

"Yes your Majesty."

The queen released a deep sigh, reaching out to take the Prince's hand in hers. "You're our precious son Arthur. We only want what's best for you."

Right, because getting married to someone who you could absolutely never love is what's best.

"Yes your Majesty."

Content with the Prince's answer, the dinner was finished in silence.

When done, the prince politely excused himself, heading towards the only place he could be himself. Behind the closed doors of his room.

Once inside, the prince started unbuttoning his shirt, saving the cuffs for the last as they were always the most difficult part. His privacy was soon interrupted by a small knock on his door.

"Come in."

The darn button! It was stuck.

Someone cleared their throat to get the Prince's attention when the door closed behind them. The Prince raised his eyes in the mirror to find Antonio standing there, his hands were tucked neatly behind his back, while his eyes looked anywhere but at the prince.

"The queen sent me to remind you that Princess Mariana arrives early tomorrow morning, you are requested to be present on time to greet her."

The Prince didn't respond. Instead he returned his eyes back to where his fingers struggled to unbutton the cuff.

The guard sighed as he watched the prince fumbling. He quickly moved to grab the prince's wrist and unbuttoned the cuff for him.

"I am a prince, Antonio, I don't need your help with a button." The prince argued, allowing him to undo the other cuff nonetheless.

Antonio nodded. "My apologies." He said and went to pull back his hand, only to be grabbed by the prince's.

"Stay, Antonio." The prince's voice came out in a low whisper as he moved close to him, his dull brown eyes rising to meet the guard's deep green ones.

"Your maj-" Antonio started to object but his words were swallowed by the prince's soft lips as they met his own.

Antonio could never push back the prince. How could he? They fit together so well and the prince tasted so delicious.

As delicious as Cherries.

So Antonio allowed the prince to pull him closer, deepening their kiss as Antonio's hands found the prince's back, savouring the feel of soft hands running through his hair.

"Stay." The prince whispered once more.

How could Antonio refuse? Tomorrow Princess Mariana would arrive and he might soon never be able to hold the prince again.

He stayed. He stayed and watched the prince fall asleep. He stayed and memorized every last bit of the prince's beautiful face, which would no longer be his to look at. He stayed and memorized the feel of the prince's fingers intertwined with his own.

When the first light of dawn seeped into the prince's room, Antonio slowly untangled himself from Arthur, careful not to wake him up as he slipped through the door.

Arthur wasn't asleep like Antonio had thought. How could he sleep? He had no idea how long he had until he could no more touch Antonio. So unknown to the boy sneaking out, he too had stayed awake all night, savouring the feel of their skin against each other. Reluctantly he had let Antonio leave. Arthur knew he had to if they were to avoid being seen by someone.

The prince laid in bed wishing the beautiful guard would come back until it was nearing the time of the Princesses arrival.

Antonio was already waiting in the hall when the prince arrived, he stood a fair distance away from his parents.

"Here you are Arthur! Did you sleep well?" The Queen smiled at him happily. One would think that she was the one getting married.

Arthur's eyes slipped to the guard, standing straight, for a fraction of second at the question.

"Yes your Majesty." The prince answered honestly, a genuine smile lingering on his lips.

The Queen took his smile as a sign of excitement for the arrival of the princess.

She was far off. If she knew how far off she was, everything would go to hell. The prince let the Queen believe what she wanted as they waited in silence.

Antonio and a couple other guards left the castle through the front gate to help the princess with her belongings. The prince watched Antonio's back as he walked away, admiring what he knew he couldn't have. The ache in his heart was far from dull. It spread throughout his entire body as he desperately craved Antonio's touch.

His thoughts were interrupted when Princess Mariana walked through the front gate gracefully. She held her head high as she walked towards the prince. A light smile spread over her lips.

"Finally I get to meet you, Prince Arthur. You really are as handsome as they say." The princess bowed in a warm greeting.

"There is nothing greater than your beauty, Princess Mariana." The prince bowed as well and put on a sugary smile for the princess. Out of the corner of his eyes he could see the king and queen passing him an approving smile.

The compliment made the princess chuckle and she turned to greet the king and the queen.

Arthur's eyes were twitching to turn to Antonio, he wanted to see him, but he refrained himself.

After the princess finished greeting Arthur's parents, he cleared his throat to get her attention. "I will show you your quarters and you can rest for now, later we will have dinner together if that is okay by you."

"Of course! All this traveling tired me up." The princess smiled at him.

Arthur led the way towards the quarters. His ears were hyper aware of Antonio's footsteps that were following them, carrying the princess' luggage.

That was the only thing keeping him calm. At least Antonio was around him, if not with him.

The princess had only just arrived but the prince was already growing weary. She talked far too much. It was nice in a way, as it reminded him of his sister, Leonora, but that was the exact problem. She reminded him of his sister.

Arthur knew that no matter how hard he tried, or no matter how hard the princess would try he simply just wouldn't be able to look at her the same way he looked at Antonio.

Valia had been so calming, she had been the closest to what the prince could be with another woman. A friend. She was much easier to be around as she barely pressed on the prince to keep talking. Princess Mariana? In the short span of walking her to her room, the princess had already asked Arthur enough questions to ace a quiz on him.

Finally when the princess closed her doors, Arthur's smile vanished in an instant as he leaned against the doorframe for a moment and breathed a sigh. He tilted his head to look at Antonio who had stayed, even after the other guards left.

Whenever Antonio wasn't required to serve the king and queen, his duty was to follow the prince around. That was probably the one and the only thing his parents had done right.

Antonio didn't make a move to comfort the prince but his eyes were saying enough. He looked at the prince with an expression that he too wanted nothing more but to just hold him. But he couldn't. He wasn't allowed to do that anywhere other than behind the doors of the prince's room.

Finally Arthur pushed himself back from the doorframe and went to his room. Hoping to get some peace before dinner approached and he was to be bombarded with another wave of questions.

• ────── ✾ ────── •

"I hope you're being nice to Princess Mariana Arthur." The Queen stated as soon as he showed up for dinner and pulled a chair to be seated.

Of course. No 'how are you' or warm greetings. All that mattered was the princess. This was a typical way for the queen to act.

"Yes your Majesty." He answered robotically.

Soon the princess too came and Arthur got up to pull the chair for her, passing her a warm smile.

"You're such a gentleman Arthur. Is it alright if I call you just Arthur?"

"Yes, that is alright." The prince answered and they all started on the dinner.

When they finished eating, the prince parted with a promise to show Mariana around the castle the next day.

The prince didn't go back to his quarters just yet. Instead he waited for everyone to leave before he proceeded towards the throne room.

He always used to find Leonora sprawled on the throne when the castle was to be asleep. Arthur smiled at the memory as he stared at the throne that sat in front of him.

"The moonlight is most beautiful here Arthur. I don't know, it just shines here more beautifully than anywhere else."

Arthur would always warn her that the King and the Queen would be extremely outraged if they found her on their throne.

"Let them." She would say, "They'll know that their precious throne has been tainted.... Just like their daughter."

The prince closed his eyes, trailing his fingers over the fine polish of the throne as he recounted the memories.

Someone entered the room behind him, but Arthur didn't need to open his eyes to tell who.

He'd recognise those footsteps anywhere.

"I miss her Antonio. It's like all the light has left the castle with her." The prince sighed.

"I know sire. Princess Leonora.... she had her own vibrancy. The castle is more dull than ever." The guard agreed with a sad voice.

The prince remembered the last conversation he had with her here. How he had told her to run away and finally live.

How he had told her maybe he would too.....

Arthur shook his head to rid himself of the inappropriate thoughts. No, he could not allow himself to think like that. Leonora was able to get away because she was not meant to be the next heir. He however, was. He couldn't ever leave.

"You should rest, sire. You have to walk the princess around the castle tomorrow." Antonio spoke in a distant tone. It was not a tone the prince was used to when he spoke to Antonio.

"How many times have I told you not to call me that." The prince finally turned to look at him. "It's Arthur to you."

A sad smile formed on the guard's lips. "Not anymore I'm afraid...sire." Antonio looked down at his polished shoes.

The words were enough to send a bolt of ache and longing towards the prince's heart. But he didn't show it.

When the prince didn't reply. The guard held open the door to let the prince pass.

The prince didn't sleep yet another night. Antonio had left his room before he could ask him to stay so he lay alone in his bed, wide awake with nothing but his thoughts and the longing that refused to go away.

The thick blankets just couldn't warm him the same as Antonio could. Sleep never came without him.

• ────── ✾ ────── •

The next morning, Arthur showed Mariana around the castle.

The morning after, he took her out to the town.

And the one after that, they spent hours talking in the garden....well, at least Mariana did. All Arthur did was listen.

This was exactly how the oncoming days passed by. The prince would spend time with the princess one way or another and hear her talk on and on. Soon the prince realised, Princess Mariana too wasn't interested in actually knowing the prince. All she did was talk about the prosperity of her kingdom, about Arthur becoming the king, about her plans once they got married.

Yet another person that looked at Arthur- the heir to the throne of Zavillia. Not Arthur- a boy with feelings and emotions.

Only two people saw him as the latter. Leonora, who he probably wouldn't ever see again, and Antonio.

Oh Antonio. Him and his beautiful, beautiful, green eyes.

If only he had never fallen for them...but no. No matter what, the prince would always choose to fall for him. Again and again and again. Everytime. No matter how many times he was given a different choice.

"Prince Arthur!" A voice brought him back to reality.

He focused his eyes on Princess Mariana who was smiling smugly.

"You were staring." She smirked.

"You're too pretty princess. I can not help myself sometimes." Arthur lied sweetly causing a red blush to appear all over the princess' neck.

Quietly they walked back to her quarters. This confused the prince as Princess Mariana never shut up, but he wasn't the one to complain. It was honestly a relief to finally let his ears rest.

After they reached her quarters, Mariana turned towards the prince and before he could comprehend anything, the princess crashed her lips on the prince's.

Arthur's first instinct was to shove the princess off. And he almost did.

His hands had found the princess' forearm and he was about to pull her back until he remembered his mother's warning.

"You will give her whatever she wants. Make her happy at every cost."

The Queen's words echoed in his head as the princess continued the sloppy kiss. Arthur forced himself to keep his eyes shut as she smeared her cherry lip gloss across his mouth.

He couldn't be more thankful when the princess finally pulled back. His heart was still racing a million miles per hour but he forced himself to keep the smile on his face from falling.

Despite Mariana's obvious flirting, Arthur had never expected her to pull such a stunt.

"Sorry." The princess breathed, still too close to Arthur for his liking. "I couldn't help myself either." And with that, the princess vanished behind the door.

Arthur stood there frozen. He couldn't dare raise his eyes to meet the guard that had witnessed their little exchange. The horror dawned on him.

Oh dear lord. Antonio had seen it. He had seen the princess slam her red lips onto his. And he had seen him accept her kiss.

Despite his attempt to not to, his eyes found the guard anyway. His expression was completely stoic. The only visible emotion was the way he glared at the floor.

Arthur wanted to say something... anything, but he couldn't. His throat had closed up and no words in his brain made any sense.

They just stood there, Antonio glaring at the floor, refusing to meet the prince's eyes and Arthur staring at him like a frozen statue.

Finally Arthur forced himself to speak up. "A-"

"It's late, sire. You should head to your quarters too." Antonio cut him off and walked straight past the prince.

Right. Of course after what he just did. Arthur had no right to speak to him.

The prince remotely proceeded to his room, forcing himself to keep all the emotions threatening to break him down, at bay.

Once he opened the door of his room, he heard a small gasp come from inside.

With a frown present on his face, the prince stepped in. His eyes widened at the sight of his sister sitting on his bed. His sister let out a sigh of relief when she saw Arthur.

"Leonora!" The prince whisper-shouted and quickly closed the door behind him.

Leonora ran to the prince and took him in a bone crushing hug which the prince returned in an equally crushing manner.

"I missed you so much!!" Leonora whispered in his ear.

This made Arthur loose control. Tears trailed down his cheeks as he finally let all the frenzy of emotions flow out of him.

Leonora was here, actually here. Right in his arms, hugging him with all her love.

At least someone still loved him. He needed his sister, oh how he had missed her.

"Hey, hey, hey!" Leonora pulled back when she heard soft sobs coming from her brother. She trailed her fingers over the wet tears to wipe them away.

"I fucked up Leonora. I fucked up everything. Now I've lost the only person other than you who has ever seen me for me! Not some stupid heir!" The prince sobbed falling to the floor.

"Arthur...shh it'll be alright." She too went to sit on her knees and dragged up Arthur's face to make him look at her.

"I- I kissed her Leonora! I kissed a stupid princess and I'm supposed to marry her. I don't know why I'm making a big deal of it anyway!"

"I know Arthur. I saw."

"You saw?" The prince asked, puzzled.

"Yes. I was sneaking through the palace trying to find you when I saw you and the princess." She answered. "It's Antonio isn't it? He's the one you love."

Love. The word seemed so familiar yet so odd. A magical word. One that brought butterflies to his stomach just from the thought of it.

Yes. The prince loved him. Funny how he had never told him that, yet it was so true. So much so that it stood out more than any other truths.

If there was anything the prince was sure of, it was his love for Antonio.

If there was one thing that would never change. It was his love for Antonio.

"What makes you want to breathe Arthur? What drives you to live? What makes you passionate?" Leonora had once asked him many years ago.

He didn't know then but he knew now.

It was his love for Antonio. Loving him was what made Arthur want to breathe. Loving him was what made Arthur want to live. Loving him...was what made Arthur passionate.

Weakly he nodded his head. That was all he could do.

"Then why are you throwing your love out the window?!" The anger in Leonora's voice surprised him.

"You stupid, stupid moron!" Leonora smacked his arm in anger. "You love Antonio!!! Then why the bloody hell are you marrying that stupid princess?!! Are you out of your bloody mind?! It's obvious by the way Antonio was glaring daggers at the floor that he loves you too! Then what. The. Bloody. Hell. Is your problem!!" She glared at him, outraged.

"What do you expect me to do Leonora? You know our parents would bury me alive if I dare refuse them." The prince had now run out of tears. He just stared at the floor.

Maybe he should just bury himself, he thought.

"Run away of course!" Leonora said as if it was the most obvious thing to do.

"It's not that simple Leonora! Who looks after them if I do that? Who looks after the kingdom? What about all my responsibilities? I have a duty to this kingdom and its people."

Leonora took in a deep breath to calm her anger and looked at her brother, as selfless as ever.

She had always worried about this. That someday Arthur would ruin himself for the sake of others.

"So you'll just ruin yourself by sitting here like this?" She asked.

The prince started to object but she cut him off. "No Arthur I don't want to hear anything. You've done enough for them. You've given most of your life moulding yourself to be the heir they want you to be when they can't give a single shit about what you want."

"Arthur," Leonora's voice was soft again as she took his brother's hands in her own, "Sometimes...you need to let the burden fall from your own shoulders. Sometimes you need to be a little selfish. Tell me Arthur. Why are you willing to give up Antonio, who I know can love you more than our parents even pretend to, for the sake of some stupid responsibilities which you have absolutely no say in? For parents that don't deserve the beautiful son you are?"

Leonora's words made Arthur want to laugh. Could Antonio love someone as pathetic as him? Maybe he could, but Arthur knew he had ruined all chances of it with what happened today. He had seen the hate evident in Antonio's eyes.

"Run away Arthur." Leonora repeated again but Arthur blocked her incoming words as he closed his eyes. Run away and go where? What did he have if not this?

As if Leonora has heard his thoughts, she answered them for him. "I know it's a scary thought. This is all you've known but you can start from scrap. You can. Me and Valia will help you two through every step. We have built a little home in a far off kingdom called Ielia. It's such a pretty place to live. Nobody cares who loves who. I'm free to kiss Valia as much as I please, I'm free to hold her hand, I'm free Arthur. I'm free to be me. You can be too."

The prince so desperately wanted to believe her. He did. But he was scared. He wasn't brave, he was a coward. All those possibilities out there and all he could think about was how cruel would it be of him to just leave the people who had brought him up all these years. Sure, no love, but they had put effort in him.

A small knock sounded on the door. Leonora got up.

"Are you leaving? Can't you stay? I could tell the servants to not bother with my room." Arthur started panicking again. If Leonora left too, he would all alone especially now that Antonio hated him. What would he do?

"I wish I could Arthur but I can't, Valia is waiting for me to return by dawn tomorrow, it's a long journey and I should leave now, it's already too dark." She gave her brother a sad smile.

The prince wanted to grab her hand but the knock came again.

Reluctantly he got up and moved to open the door. Before he could, Leonora made him turn towards her again and placed a soft kiss on his cheek.

"Fly Arthur. Spread your wings. I know it's scary, I know you might fall. But the sky is so beautiful. And you're not alone Arthur, you have Antonio. All yours, you all his. Fly in the beautiful blue sky before you decide to tear your wings off." She whispered.

But Arthur couldn't find words to reply to what she had said. He opened the door and left.

Everyone was already waiting on the table for him. Antonio was standing at his usual spot, not even sparing him a glance. As usual he put on a smile, which came with way more difficulty than usual, and sat down.

"What took you so long Arthur?" The Queen asked.

Arthur didn't notice the way her eyes were glinting. He didn't even have to answer because the Queen spoke again.

"We have decided on the date for the wedding!" The Queen told him joyously.

"What?" Arthur's smile faltered.

"Day after tomorrow!!" Princess Mariana squealed.

His face must have drained of all colour because he could certainly feel growing dizzy.

"I know it's sudden but what's the point in waiting?! We have decided on a small personal wedding and we can just throw a party for guests later! My family will arrive by tomorrow! Everything is perfect."

But Arthur couldn't hear any of the princess' words.

"Arthur, how do you feel about it?" The Queen pressed on him to say something. He could see the Queen's smile twitching from annoyance.

"That is wonderful." Arthur found himself answering under the Queen's silent glare. "That is wonderful. Umm... I... just remembered that I had written to a very important friend regarding the wedding, I must inform him about the change of plans. I should write the letter now otherwise it won't reach him in time." The prince made up an excuse and got up from the table.

"Oh well then you should. Antonio could bring your food to your room." The princess nodded, she couldn't care about the prince leaving. She was drowning in the joy of the wedding happening.

"Yes Antonio can do that." The prince's voice wavered at the guard's name. Was he even allowed to take his name anymore?

Hoping he would follow, the prince went straight to his room.

He was panicking. He was definitely panicking. He felt like he couldn't breathe anymore, tears were threatening to appear and escape his eyes again as he paced back and forth in his room.

All he could think about was Antonio. Antonio and his smile. Antonio and his throaty laugh. Antonio's fingers tangled in his hair. Antonio's kisses. Antonio's lips on his skin. Antonio's skin against his, every single inch of it.

The door opened and closed behind him within a fraction of a second. He stilled. Afraid of what he would see.

The sound of a tray roughly being slammed on the table was followed immediately by a tight hand pulling him around as Antonio's hot lips slammed against his.

It was enough to send Arthur's frenzy of thoughts down the gutter. He tangled his fingers in Antonio's hair, flushing his body against Antonio's not wanting to leave even a bit of space between them.

Antonio's hands found their way to the prince's back, holding onto him like his life depended on it.

The kiss was nothing like any of those they had shared before. It was hot and full of desperation.....full of passion.....full of need.

Antonio broke away first. "I don- I-" He struggled to find words but he couldn't.

"Take me. All of me. Every bit. I want to be all yours....yours for the last time." The prince whispered desperately, his hands trailing down to the guard's shirt in a sloppy attempt to remove the fabric separating them.

That was all Antonio needed to hear as he dived back into another desperate kiss and slowly pushed the prince back as they made their way towards the bed, shredding all their clothes to the floor.

Arthur clung to him desperately and tasted every inch of his skin he could reach. All the while, his only thoughts were how he would never have this again.

This...pure magic. This beautiful feeling of nothing but pure euphoria. This beautiful boy above and inside him. These beautiful green eyes he had fallen in love with....

Everything he had ever fallen in love with.

• ────── ✾ ────── •

A tear streamed down Arthur's closed eyes. He was afraid to open them. He didn't want to, not when he knew that he would find the space beside him empty.

It was still dark. He didn't understand why Antonio had left already. He wanted him still. He wanted him more. Arthur might just have broken a wire in his brain because he was sure that he would never stop wanting Antonio.

He turned his face and finally opened his eyes as he watched the glistening moonlight shine across the room.

Something caught his eyes. Arthur sat up to have a better look at it. A note was placed on his bedside table, right under the ray of moonlight. He reached for it and carefully folded the note.

His breath hitched at what was written in a beautiful cursive handwriting.

»»-----------¤-----------««

Dear Prince Arthur,

You will be loved by all my heart for as long as the sun is alive, for as long as the moon is beautiful.
By every last trace of my existence. You will be loved.

Yours forever
Antonio

»»-----------¤-----------««

Antonio loved him. Just as he loved Antonio.

Yours forever.

The prince read those words again and again. Antonio was his. Forever. All he had to do was....

Leonora's words rang in his ears. "You're not alone Arthur, you have Antonio. All yours, you all his. Fly in the beautiful blue sky before you decide to tear your wings off."

What was he doing? Leonora was right. What was he doing throwing everything he had, everything he needed, out the window for people who couldn't give two shits about his feelings? People who he couldn't even call parents because there was absolutely no warmth in their relationship.

But Antonio? A shiver went down Arthur's spine just from thinking about how Antonio had made him feel tonight.

He loved him.

The prince folded the note and put on his clothes, pocketing it. It was the only thing he wanted to take.

Before he could even put a proper thought in it, he found himself heading towards the throne room. Something told him that he would find Antonio there.

He had told his sister that he too would run away someday in that very room.

He had been lying.

Not anymore.

And right as he had hoped, there he was. Antonio. His Antonio. Standing in the middle of the room as moonlight illuminated his face softly.

The same green eyes that had led up to everything until now focused their attention on him.

Antonio didn't say anything, but the prince did.

"There's a person I am deeply, hopelessly, irrevocably in love with Antonio." The prince said as he slowly moved towards the guard who was watching him with an intense gaze.

"Will he... run away with me?" The prince asked finally.

Antonio gulped as a single tear escaped his hold. "He will my dear Prince. He will."

Arthur closed the distance between them and kissed him very softly as all fears and doubts left him in that very instance. No, he could never want anything else.

"It's Arthur for you." The prince told him, a genuine happy smile breaking out on his lips.

This boy was his. All his.

So they ran away together.

Dear Prince Arthur finally found his freedom.

And they lived happily ever after.

You were a
Torrential downpour
Of all my
Forbidden longings
