Confrontation
Footsteps interrupt our disturbed thoughts. I turn my head puzzledly but inside, my mind is whirling. Ed's brother slept with Hannah? Seriously? That's the worst kind of betrayal ever.
"Anyone here is Evelyn Benson's kin?" Dr Zac says hesitantly. His eyes flick to Eleanor and widen, "Eleanor, what happened?"
Berry leaps to his feet and I rush towards his side. I need Eveylyn to be okay. I need her baby to be okay. It's all my fault. All my damned fault.
"Give me the details please," Eleanor snaps at Dr Zac and I stare at her. I would never ever speak so harshly to anyone but I guess she has reason enough this time.
"Well, fortunately, we managed to stop Mrs Benson's excessive bleeding," Dr Zac says kindly, giving us the sympathetic gaze.
"So she's fine?" Berry pipes up, his face lighting up and his frown instantly vanishes.
"Yes, but we need to keep her under close observation for the next 24 hours," Dr Zac says.
"Thank goodness," Berry murmurs, closing his eyes.
"And the baby?" I ask hesitantly and my heart skips a beat when I see Dr Zac's frown in place.
"I'm sorry. We didn't manage to keep the baby," Dr Zac answers softly, patting me on the back.
I stiffen and turn to Berry, wondering how he's handling the shock but he just keeps muttering, "As long as Evelyn's okay, I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine...."
"I will leave the things here in your hands, Zac," Eleanor cuts in briskly. "Ed and I need to pay a visit to Jack."
"I'm not sure the Chief is free at the moment...." Dr Zac says uncertainly.
"He will make time for us," Eleanor snaps and storms off. Ed takes my arm and we hurry after her, leaving behind Dr Zac and Berry.
"Is your mother going berserk?" I whisper as we wind around corridor after corridor.
"Not yet," he grimaces. "But she will be. Jack's her favorite child. It hurts her that her perfect son had committed such a scandalous act." Ed's hurt. I realise. He's hurt by the fact that whatever he does never matches up to Jack and even so, he accepts it. Until he found out what his brother had done.
"Who cares about her?" I touch his face gently. "I think you're way better than Jack."
"Don't say that yet," he laughs. "Wait till you see his face. Many girls have swooned over him."
We finally reach the door and Eleanor stops short, as if she's gathering all her strength to do this. She knocks on the door briskly and there's some sort of muffled scuffling from inside the room.
"Jack," Eleanor barks. "I need to see you this instant."
"Hang on," Jack shouts. There's some banging and scuffling until the door's finally thrown open and a girl with an unbuttoned shirt emerges. Eleanor looks taken aback and Ed seems disgusted.
"Sorry," the girl mutters and darts away from the corridor.
"Mother?" Ed prompts.
"Sorry, I just needed a moment...." Eleanor mutters and moves into the room. I step right in behind her and I'm well, almost bowled over by his brother.
He's...to put in simpler terms, gorgeous even by modern male standards. He has floppy blonde hair and toned muscles, as if he works out at the gym every single day. He gives us an easy grin and I immediately understand why Hannah slept with him. But...he somehow stink of superficiality. His smile seems forced and his eyes are cold, unlike Ed's warm ones. Both brothers are literally like day and night.
"Mother," Jack says cheerily. Eleanor doesn't greet back. She stares stonily at Jack's unzipped pants until he finally realises and quickly zips it up in a hurry. I almost gagged. Is this really the chief of the hospital?
"Ed." Jack nods at his brother.
"Jack." Ed says pleasantly but their greetings are curt, short and cold.
Jack's eyes flick past Ed disinterestedly until they land on me. "And who's this?" he chirps in brightly.
"She's my girlfriend." Ed's hold on me tightens, as if warning him to stay away and that I'm off-limits. However, Jack didn't seem perturbed at all.
He takes at a step towards me and holds out his hand. "I'm Jack Hardy," he says charmingly. "The best plastic surgeon this country has."
"Yea, cos' he's all plastic and fake," Ed mutters under his breath.
I roll my eyes and shakes his hand. As I try to pull it out from his grasp, he holds on to my hand far longer than usual and I grimace before Ed pulls me back protectively. "That bastard, he has his sights set on every girl including youl," he murmurs aggressively.
I pat him on the shoulder and scowl at his brother who doesn't seem at all bothered. "Is there anything in particular you want from me? Something must have happened to warrant a visit from Ed," Jack says sarcastically, flipping his blonde hair over. Geez, is he a girl or what? Why does he keep flipping his hair like those high school cheerleaders.
"Tell me, Jack, did you or did you not sleep with Hannah?" Eleanor cuts in sharply.
Jack doesn't even falter. "What do you mean?" he says innocently. "Has Hannah gotten back with you, Ed? Congratulations, brother. But I don't get, what has anything got to do with me?"
"For once, just stop lying to all of us," Ed growls. "Was Hannah's child yours?"
Jack hesitates. His eyes flick from Eleanor's scowling face and Ed's angry expression. "Well...yes, it was mine. Of course, I was just planning to tell you about it," he laughs. "Looks like you beat me to the punch for once!" He roars.
Everyone stares at him in silence and nobody laughs at his ridiculous joke.
"Well, fine, it was mine." Jack waves his hands dismissively. "But nothing happened right? I mean, you dumped her and now it's all over."
"You forced me to kill your own child," Ed spits out in anger.
"Don't act all so high and noble, brother." For the first time, Jack's face registers some form of emotion. "You've always been the one that never gets into trouble. The one Mother could always depend on and I'm always the flighty playboy that nobody takes seriously," he says agressively. "I liked Hannah first but when I asked her out, she laughed at me and said who on earth in the right mind would choose me over you."
I stare at him. Well, that bit about Ed being better than Jack is true.
"What th-" Ed tries to say something but Jack cuts in furiously like a bullet. "Dad liked you much better because you were more mature. Even before he died, you were the one he wanted to see. Adrian hated me from the start. He told me that Ed was just like his child from his previous marriage, sweet and dependable."
I suck in my breath. Dad..I mean, Adrian, said that I was sweet and dependable? I...I....
"Stop it." Ed shakes his head. "You are doing your mind tricks again."
"I'm not. It's the truth."
"You had Mother's love. She favoured you over me. So what if Dad and Adrian liked me better? Mother chose you to be the Chief of the hospital. Not me." Ed takes a step forward and glares at his brother.
"Chief?" Jack laughs darkly. "You were supposed to be Chief until you decided to abandon the family business to pursue a career in corporate management. I was never supposed to be anything."
"Can you two boy stop referring to me as a 3rd person when I'm standing here?" A cold voice pierces through the fiery charade and everyone's heads swivel to the formidable woman standing stiffly in a corner.
"Jack, I'm deeply disappointed in you," Eleanor says coldly. "You betrayed Ed's trust and abused your position. You have no sense of moral being in you. I'm hereby stripping you as Chief of this hospital. The stakeholders and I will decided on the new Chief."
"Mother-" Jack's voice breaks. He stares at Eleanor disbelievingly. "You can't. This position is mine. I own it. You can't take it away from me!"
Eleanor tears his eyes away from her younger child but I can see the hurt in her. She really did adore Jack. It's too bad Jack's an ass.
"Are you going to put Ed as Chief?" Jack hollers.
"I haven't decided," Eleanor says slowly. "But I will do it to makeup to him if it's within my means."
Jack shakes his head and tears off his "Chief" badge from his white coat. "Once I step out of this room, I will not be a part of the Hardy family anymore. Is that what you want Mother?"
"Are you threatening me?"
"Yes," Jack says defiantly.
"You may go out as you wish. But bear in mind, you will have nothing to your name the moment you leave us."
Jack's face pales for a moment before he smooths his face. "I would rather be a penniless man than to work under Ed." He stomps out of the room and we all stare after him.
Eleanor immediately broken down. "My baby... I drove away my baby..." she sobs.
Ed rushes over to comfort her.
It's abit strange to see Eleanor the Nazi in such a vulnerable state.
