Chapter 43

"This is too easy." Charlie started, looking at the mansion in front of her.
"Of course it is. It's a trap to get to me. But I am ready." Nyx said with a brave face.

The three of them simply had to follow the stench of the Farels. And within an hour, they reached a mansion about half the size of Morpheus' and Hypnos' one back in New Habbershire.

"I doubt you are." Morpheus said, but knocked on the front door anyway. Charlie's eyes wandered between her soulmate and Nyx. The two obviously had a lot in common. Both stubborn and determined, yet they hated each other.
"Come in. Master Hypnos has been expecting you." Yet another Are opened up. Morpheus wondered how on earth his father had so many and why he never knew about them. But he was sure his father had a good reason for his secrecy.

"This way." The three silently followed the Are into what looked like an office. It was like the smaller version of his office in New Habbershire. Morpheus realized his father could not have just rented this mansion. It had to be his. For a long time, judging by the ancient golden decorations displayed around the entire way to this room.

"What a marvellous sight. My first wife, my favourite son and- Miss Denver." Hypnos appeared from a door across from theirs. Nyx immediately started walking towards him.
"Don't try anything or Phobetor dies." Hypnos smirked, knowing Nyx would stop in her tracks the way she just did.

"What have you done to him?!" Hypnos ignored Nyx' outburst. He took a calm step towards the chair behind the desk that was the only thing separating Morpheus, Charlie and Nyx from Hypnos. Looking up with a content smile, his eyes focused on his supposed soulmate.

"Father, what is this all about?" Morpheus started, making Hypnos' eyes leave Nyx and eventually settle on him.
"My son. How I wish I could've kept you out of this. You deserve so much more than this broken mess I offer. But this will soon be over and then we can fly back home. How does that sound, Morpheus?" He asked his youngest son.
"Like you haven't answered my question." Said son responded with a glare.

"Whatever lies have they fed you? I can assure you I have never-"
"Quit it, Hypnos. You're a despicable excuse of an Uvalion. You should be stripped off your Might this instant!" Nyx interrupted, once again drawing his attention to her.
"I should? Why ever would you say that? Because I want us to be a happy family?" Came his provoking question.

"Because you have taken one child from me already. Now I don't care what you do with your bastard, but you will leave mine out of this. If it's revenge you want for having our children choose me, then so do it. But stop hiding behind your tricks and be a real Uvalion for once." Nyx rolled her shoulders back and it was that very moment that Charlie realized Phobetor and his mother were also very much alike. She was fierce and ready to fight for her family. It made Charlie realize that she too should start fighting for what was right instead of always being dragged along and watched like she was some helpless bird.

"Oh, please. I don't need tricks in order to defeat you. You will do so yourself. That is, if you want Phobetor freed." Hypnos cleared his throat.
"Miss Denver, do you remember the article online? The one about Uvalions?" Charlotte gulped in answer, unable to trust her voice in that moment.

"It appears Nyx was the one who uploaded it. And she will be the one punished for it." Charlie frowned at that and looked at Morpheus.
"What article?" Nyx asked.
"Father, I doubt it was-"
"Of course it wasn't. She couldn't type a sentence on a computer even if you spelled it out to her. Yet, somehow the article could be traced back to her. Technology, huh?" Hypnos leaned back, watching his guests with a smug smirk playing on his lips.

"You bastard." Nyx caught on.
"What? I could've also wanted you to walk out as soon as the sun rises. But I would rather you suffer under my watch." He explained.
"Suffer for what? Why are you doing this and why have you been lying about the senate?" Morpheus asked, feeling betrayed and somehow used.

"You wouldn't understand, son. But when someone takes from you your biggest pride and joy, you do everything to get it back. Even if that meant hurting some people." Hypnos sighed.
"So what's the goal here? She gets punished for something you did and then what? What about Phobetor and Phantasos. Who by the way cannot leave the house without-"

"Their mother's permission, I know. But I also know that with no chosen guardian left to be with, there is no other way for the two than to stay with their second parent. It is not that complicated. You just watch your father work now in silence. The senate should be here soon." Hypnos said.
"Impossible. You cannot just call-" Nyx started. But a crack of thunder interrupted her, causing her to step back. Suddenly, the room turned cold and darker. Not like pitch black, but just darker. It immediately caused a shiver down Charlie's spine.

"This better be a good reason, brother. The senate will execute me if they knew I was here now, entertaining this whole spiel." A man, twice the size of Hypnos appeared behind him. It looked like he jumped out of a hole in the ceiling. Only that hole was not there anymore and all the fog cleared up now. His dark gray body was covered in scars and one eye of his was shut close while he talked.

"Of course, Thanatos. Would I call on you if it wasn't urgend?" Hypnos stood up and pointed at Nyx.
"I have her here now. Convince the senate that she had published the article I told you about. I want them all here to punish her." Hypnos ordered.
"I told you, it is not enough. We need more evidence." Thanatos rubbed his dark temples that were slightly covered by black hair. His upper body was naked and his lower wore brown leather shorts.

"And what about a confession?" That made Thanatos stop and look at Nyx. Charlie heard her audibly gulp. But she knew that Nyx was going to confess.
"I hear." The Uvalion demanded.
"I confess." Nyx said after a long silence.

"No!" Charlotte yelled out just when Thanatos walked towards Nyx. Now he was looking at Charlotte with a tilted head.
"I did it." Charlotte gulped, but knew- hoped they would simply erase her memory and the whole ordeal would be over.
"Charlotte." Morpheus scoffed, surprised by her outburst. She ignored him, along with Hypnos' death stare.

"Yes, it was me. I wrote it while I was in her house. I didn't think it would cause such a big problem." She said, stepping in front of Nyx.
"What are you doing, you stupid, incompetent-"
"Don't talk to her like that." Morpheus interrupted his father. Hypnos was momentarily perplexed and one look at the way Morpheus looked at Charlie, made him realize what had happened during the time he was separated from his son.

"You figured it out, haven't you?" Hypnos asked, stepping forward.
"Without your help." Morpheus snapped.
"Either way, you know who she is now. You ought to protect her. In order for you to be with her, you must do what is right. You cannot be with her once her memories got erased." Hypnos started.

"That's not-"
"Shut it, you traitor!" Hypnos glared at Nyx and then turned towards Thanatos.
"You must arrest her now. She did it and is using this human as an-"
"No, she's not. I wrote it and I demand the senate to do something before it gets too popular. We wouldn't want that, would we?" Charlotte asked.

"No. I am alerting the rest now." Thanatos took out a block of silver cards, similiar to the ones Hypnos gave her. The huge Uvalion of Death scribbled something on one card before tossing it towards the wall. Everyone in the room watched it vanish into thin air.

"What have you done?" Nyx grabbed Charlie's wrist tight. Too tight.
"I'm helping you buy more time. There has to be another way to get to Phobetor. You cannot be arrested for something you never did." Charlie whispered to her. Nyx looked at her with a mixture of surprise and confusion. But in a good way.

"Morpheus will help you. He is a good man and knows his father's true intentions now. Just don't keep fighting, it doesn't help any of you." Charlie said in an assured tone, watching Morpheus stare at his father in disbelief.

But her eyes caught the attention of something else. The appearance of a hole in the ceiling. The same hole Thanatos just jumped out from. Only now it didn't immediately close after him. It allowed six more humongous Uvalions to enter the room. Each had their own style and colour. Their own shape and character. It was something, Charlie knew she would never remember. But she felt honored to be in the same room as literal Titans. Well, according to her Greek mythology knowledge. But truth be told, she was over trying to compare and make sense out of everything. Some things just couldn't be explained.

"As a result of my deepest gratitude, I will grant you this information: You will see him again. Soulmates are destined to find each other, especially after they mate."

That made Charlie blush. But she nodded regardless and looked at Morpheus again, who now reached her, his hand grabbing hers tight.
"I will talk to them and-"
"No, you must focus on helping Phobetor. I know you will come up with a way to defeat Hypnos. He isn't a good man, Morpheus." Charlie sighed.

"Okay, okay. I will. But just promise me that you'll be happy." He squeezed her hands.
"What?" Charlie almost forgot. Erasing her memory meant literally erasing her memory. Everything she did with Morpheus. And everything she was feeling for him.
"Promise me, you'll be happy. You know I won't remember you. But you will and I want you to not blame yourself for anything. These past few days with you were the most exciting and amazing days I have ever experienced. And I know I was a handful, but just know that I've liked you from the very moment I saw you. Despite that horrible jacket you wore. I love you, Nathaniel." She said.

"I love you too and I will never forget you. I will never-"
"Human. Step forward and confess your crime." A deep, mighty voice interrupted Morpheus. Charlie looked at the gigantic woman, dressed in red. Her eyes were milky blue, her hair as red as her coat, unreal. Her skin was dark, darker than the deepest shade of black.

With a gulp and one last squeeze of Morpheus' hand, Charlie walked forward. And for the very first time in her life, she felt important. She felt as if this moment could help more people than just the ones in the room.

So with her newfound confidence and a high chin, the twenty-four year old opened her mouth to speak.

"I confess."
