Chapter 4

The next day was going pretty good for Charlie. Who was she kidding? She felt amazing. She woke up at six a.m. again. But this morning, she felt more energized, happier and couldn't remember waking up in the middle of the night, because of her nightmares.

Instead, she remembered dreaming about a man. He himself looked scary, but his aura was... beautiful? She didn't know how to place it. She dreamed about this man, she's never seen before. She couldn't exactly remember what they did, but Charlie knew one thing: She wanted to dream about him again.

She had left for work at exactly seven o'clock and even found the motivation to make herself and Sheriff Peters some coffee. After that, they made their way to the shooting range. Charlie wasn't much better than yesterday, but she didn't let that ruin her mood.

In fact, she left work earlier than yesterday with a smile on her face. The sun was already starting to set, so she hurried home. Her car was being dramatic again, but she made it home safely and plopped down onto her couch, before hearing her stomach growl for hunger. Within the next half hour, she had fixed herself something other and more delicious than store bought ramen noodles: freshly cooked bolognese pasta. Another half hour later, and the young woman sighed in satisfaction after eating two plates. Today was a great day.

"Wow." She said astonished. She liked the peace she was experiencing for the first time in ages. She didn't know what came over her, but she suddenly grinned and stood up again. Her radio alarm clock came in handy as she turned on the radio and danced to an unknown song. But she didn't care, she just danced.

All of a sudden, there was a knock on her door. She didn't hear it at first, but the knocks became louder and faster. She jumped once the pounding reached her ears. The volume of the music faded into the background as she lowered the volume, before opening the door.

"Mom?" Charlie let out a sigh of relief, once she saw who was behind the door. Her mother stood there with her hands on her lips and her eyes narrowed on her daughter. Charlie gulped. She knew that posture meant no good.

"Yesterday, your excuse was bad. I know it wasn't true, because I saw your car in the parking lot when I looked out of the window. You know what else I saw? A man! And that had me thinking, maybe this man was just helping you with your car, but when I called you today and you didn't pick up after the millionth time, I knew something was going on." Her mother's words made her blink. What?

"I can't believe you are ditching your family for a man. Is he here?" Charlie had no opportunity to respond, before her mother brushed past her and into the small apartment. Charlie's hand was still placed on the doorknob as she turned to watch her mother look around in the small room, that she called her living room/ bedroom/ kitchen.

When the elder woman finally realized that her daughter's apartment was empty, her facial expression softened and she turned around to face Charlie. She didn't know what was going on with her only child and it made her paranoid. They always ate dinner together and she insisted that Charlie would stay nearby when she was old enough to move out. Her mother did not want to lose her only daughter. Especially after finding out about her husband's lung cancer.

Charlie was beyond confused now. She hadn't heard her phone buzz nor ring all day. She closed the door and walked over to her purse, fishing her phone out. The pink flip motorola was out of battery. Charlie frowned. No way! She always charged it over night. Had she forgotten? She tried to remember what exactly she did last night, but she couldn't. Thinking about it now, she did wake up in her work clothes as well. In the morning, she really didn't care, since she was so happy about her good night's sleep. But that was also odd for her.

"What is it?" She heard her mother ask and snapped out of it.
"It turned itself off, because it has no battery. I'm sorry, I must have forgotten to charge it." Charlie answered and walked over to her bed in order to put the charger into the phone.

"Okay, so you have an excuse for today, but I still don't believe you when it comes to yesterday. That man and you seemed to have had a heated conversation. Who is he?" Charlie frowned in confusion. What man? She couldn't remember what man her mother was talking about.

"I- Mom, I don't know what you mean. I- I can't remember what I did yesterday after work. I just remember that I stayed in the shooting range a little longer and then drove home. That's it." She told her honestly.

Elizabeth Denver rolled her eyes. She never wanted her daughter to become a police officer. That wasn't a safe job and she was her only daughter, she thought. And what was that about not remembering? Elizabeth wasn't stupid. Old yes, but not stupid. She knew exactly what she saw last night. But from the looks of it, her daughter really did seem confused.

"So, you can't remember anything after that?" Charlie nodded in answer to her mother's question. Elizabeth looked at her daughter's state and sighed. She would have to talk to Doctor Ronald again. Maybe this was some other side effect of those sleeping pills.

"How did you sleep yesterday?" She asked her daughter. Elizabeth hoped she could help her. She hoped, she was able to take those nightmares away and give her dreams of fluffy animals and ice cream. But that were just dreams of her own.

"Actually, I had an amazing dream last night. I remember it and it was no nightmare, mom. It was an actual dream. It confused me, but it was a dream and I slept the whole night through." Charlie was excited to tell her. She knew how much her mother worried about her and that was definitely something she wanted to hear.

"An actual dream?" Elizabeth's lips slowly curled up into a smile. She couldn't believe it.
"Yes, mom. An actual dream!" Charlie repeated and the two women embraced each other. Elizabeth was probably making a bigger deal out of it, than she should've, but she couldn't help the tears that escaped her eyes.

"Mom, don't cry." Charlie found herself wiping a tear off her own cheek. They looked at each other once again and laughed happily, before they sat down on Charlie's couch. Charlie had no intention on ruining the mood, but she had to ask her mother about her father's well being.

"How is dad?" She asked. She hadn't seen him in two days now and felt her happy mood slightly fall. She felt guilty and lowered her head in shame. The dooctor only gave him a couple more months to live since they saw him last week and here she was, dancing carelessly while she could've spend some more time with him.

"He is doing okay, darling. You know his condition. Come over tomorrow, he is asleep right now, seeing it's already passed eight." Her mother told her and Charlie nodded with a small, but sad smile on her face. Elizabeth smiled back and pinched her cheeks, before giving her daughter a smooch on the right cheek.

"I better go now. I don't want your father to be alone any longer. Promise me to come as soon as you get out of your car after work tomorrow." Elizabeth made her daughter promise as she stood up and made her way towards the front door. Charlie nodded and gave her mother another kiss on the cheek before closing the door after she got out.

Charlie sighed as she turned around and eyed her bed. She was ready for bed and hoped she would have another dream of that mysterious man. But she also hesitated as she changed into her pajamas. She was afraid that she would end up having nightmares again and that dream from last night would be the only good dream she would ever have.

Nevertheless, she lied down in her bed after turning off the lights and forced her eyes close. The only thing she could do now, was hope. And she did.

Morpheus came around to check on her after he had breakfast. He had told his father about Miss Denver's nightmares and the old man was happy that his son finally had a new client. It was not easy to help people when you're supposed to stay away from civilization. But Hypnos had his contacts and so Morpheus had them too.

But Hypnos also had his doubts about said Miss Denver, the young woman who seemed to have occupied Morpheus' thoughts. Most of Morpheus' clients were small children and the oldest he had seen was thirteen. But Miss Denver was a twenty four year old lady, according to Morpheus. He couldn't believe she was still having nightmares, but let his son help her. Now, all Morpheus had to do was check up on her and that was it. Most clients that age had night terrors. Which was an issue that Hypnos could help with usually. But he trusted his son to have helped her. If he said, she slept like a rock, then she slept like a rock.

Morpheus thought so too as he climbed up the fire ladder to her apartment again, like he did last night. From the stars in the sky, he read that it must've been shortly after midnight. He had slept a little longer, because of the headache from yesterday. That was one of the consequences for using Might the other night.

He couldn't help the proud smirk he had on his face when he saw her sleeping peacefully. She should buy some curtains, he thought. But for now, he was happy. She looked happy and that was because of him. After what felt like hours, he sighed and turned around. His mission was completed, so he had no role in her life anymore.

He thought erasing her memory of him directly after she fell asleep last night, was too early, but he didn't want to break in again just to do that. Well, technically he didn't break in, he made her open the window and stepped into her apartment. She was the one opening the window. With a little help of his power, yes. But in the end, it was necessary.

His thoughts were interrupted as he heard a loud banging noise and quickly turned around to see what was going on in her apartment. His eyes widened as he saw her coming towards him. He panicked. What was she going to do? He didn't know if he wanted to run away or stay, but his body decided for the latter.

He watched her open the window and frowned. He looked up at her, expecting a confused or angry look, but was surprised when he saw her smiling. Which shocked him even more, was the fact that her eyes were closed. What the heck was she doing?

He watched her climb out of the window and stand in front of him. That's all she did. She just stood in front of him, that smile still on her face and her eyes were closed. He couldn't lie and say that didn't irritate him. He waved a hand in front of her and called her name once, but she didn't react.

"What the- Miss Denver!" He said louder as she suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck. Morpheus didn't know what to do, so he tried to pull her arms away as they were kind of choking him.

Charlie felt disturbance in her sleep. The man she saw in front of her had suddenly stopped smiling and an angry look grazing his handsome face. His aura changed, the green and pink smoke around him turning into buildings. Her dream seemed much more real now and she didn't like it as she let out a groan.

Morpheus kept shaking her body as he finally managed to get her hands off him. He watched her face change into one of pain and her eyelids started shaking. She was about to wake up, he knew. He waited with his hands still on her shoulders. He heard her groan in pain and frowned. What? He didn't even do anything, he thought. Then finally, Charlie opened her eyes.

She wasn't even shocked when she awoke. For a second, she still thought she was dreaming as the image was exactly the same as in her dream. But then she felt the coldness of the wind and the loud noises coming from the street below. Below?

Charlie forced her eyes away from the man and glanced down onto the street below her. How could she see the street? Was- was she on the fire ladder?! What was she doing on the fire ladder? She couldn't remember walking out, she thought. Her gaze shifted back to the mysterious man in front of her.

"What?" Was all she could breathe out. Was she still dreaming? If so, this dream felt very real. Morpheus eyed her, not knowing how to respond to that. He didn't know what he was going to tell her anyway. But he knew, he had to bring her to his father.

And he really wasn't looking forward to it.
