Coffee on Broadway

"Uh... One of those things. A vanilla chai, yeah." Connor pointed to the menu, not wanting to mispronounce it but knowing he had anyways. The boy at the register seemed so on edge, nearly dropping the cash wad that he had shoved to him all over the floor. But he was cute, in his own way.

   "Here, e-enjoy your day."

"Thanks... Evan. I like your shirt." He read his name tag, then looked back up to him. Evan had been wearing Falsettos shirt, causing Connor to smile a little. Evan couldn't really manage to spit out a sentence, instead blushing and waving a small goodbye to Connor.

For the next month, everyday Connor came in at eleven a.m. to get his vanilla chai before going to a bundle of auditions and waiting for callbacks. Evan was always there with a small smile, and had started making his order in advance by three minutes to make sure it was still hot, but ready for Connor to take it when he got there. Sometimes, he would write little smiley faces on the cup. Connor's auditions usually went better on those days.

"Hey, you're into musicals, right?" Connor said as he took a sip of his drink, looking at Evan with an eyebrow raised. Evan nodded, showing off his Kinky Boots sweatshirt under his barista apron.

"So tomorrow my sister hooked me up with Wicked tickets and I was wondering since you're into musicals and I don't really have friends-"

"Oh my god." Evan started, his face nearly white as he dropped the roll of quarters he was holding.

"Would you like to come with me?" Connor finished, a blush appearing over his cheeks, yet he blamed it on the heat of his drink.

"Y-You can't mean that... Just sell it online or something!"

"I'd rather go with a friend... It's kinda lame but-"

"N-No it's okay we're friends I'll go! Unless theres someone else-" Connor giggled, covering it up with a cough quickly before looking back to Evan with the tickets in his hand.

   "You're in?"

"Fuck yes." Evan breathed, covering up his mouth quickly as a co-worker passed by.

"Here... Be there at six thirty?" Connor scribbled his apartment address down on a napkin, sliding it to Evan with a soft smile.

"Y-Yeah! Can't wait. Drink's on the house today... A-And like forever now. I owe you."

"Don't worry about it, Ev." Connor said as he picked up his bag to leave, swaying his hips ever so slightly as he left the coffee shop.

Evan couldn't concentrate on the rest of his shift, his thoughts only focused on Connor. He didn't have many friends beside his fellow barista, Alana, who once he told had to restrain herself from slapping him for getting offered a ticket.

"You didn't ask him if he had a third?" She said almost angry, but happy that her friend was managing to go out with someone.

   "I-I completely forgot-"

"I'm kidding. You have a good date. Take an illegal video or some shit." She said as she ruffled his hair, going back to filling up a fresh cup of coffee for herself as long as one for Evan.

Connor hadn't expected Evan to agree to go with him. He thought the boy would either reject the offer, especially since it was Connor offering him the tickets. He wasn't quite the type of person that was approachable or likable, or at least to himself. Evan couldn't disagree more. Since the day Connor walked in, Evan was sort of head over heels for him. He had to pinch himself everyday to keep from blushing when the boy ordered. Connor would always ask him how his day was or what he was listening to, and Evan would reply with stories of crazy customers or go on ranting about the latest show that made him cry.

Evan spent at least an hour preparing his outfit, making sure it didn't look like he was trying too hard or too little. He smoothed out the nice polo shirt and threw on a soft bomber jacket with a pair of tight jeans, trying to smile into the mirror before he left. As he approached Connor's door, he took a deep breath before knocking. Connor answered almost immediately, his hair done up in a neat bun and he was dressed quite appropriately in a pair of black jeans and button up shirt with roses embroidered into the sides.

"Hey, ready to go? We can walk from here... It's only a few blocks." Connor smiled, patting his pocket to make sure the tickets were there as he stepped out to meet Evan's side.

"T-Thank you, again." He smiled, cursing himself for blushing as they started walking beside each other. It was quiet for the first few minutes as they walked, almost normal but the sense of awkward still lingering between them.

"W-What do you like doing in your free time?" Connor started, looking down and over to Evan beside him with a little smile.

"I really like listening to musicals, obviously, but also I-I study botany like trees and stuff..." Evan felt quite embarrassed over the major, but felt confident enough to share it with Connor.

"That sounds so cool. I dropped out of college... I'm auditioning for some on and off broadway shows right now."

"You have t-to let me hear you s-sing sometime!" Evan's face lit up with so much happy that Connor almost agreed, then scratching the back of his head nervously.

"I haven't gotten any callbacks yet... But yea, maybe sometime." He giggled, his eyes lighting up as the theatre came into sight.

"Oh my god... I can't believe we're here really. I walk by this everyday but... We're gonna see it..." Evan rambled on about his favorites of the cast, his favorite numbers, and his favorite costumes. Connor thought it was quite adorable, especially the look on Evan's face when they sat in their seats which were somehow in the front row.

"I'm not going to be able to repay you." Evan mumbled, sitting down nervously.

"Like I said, don't worry about it. I'm just glad I get to spend time with you." He regretted the words immediately after he said them, but Evan seemed to light up a light shade of pink over his cheeks.

"T-Thanks." He said with a genuine smile, both of them shutting up as the lights cut and the music started.

The first act ended, and Evan was already in tears.

"I-I just fucking love it... So much." He stammered out, taking the risky move of leaning his head on Connor's shoulder. Connor looked surprised, but wrapped his arm around Evan's shoulders and rubbed them comfortingly.

"It was really good... It's one of my favorites." Connor smiled, the lights coming down on them again as the second act started. Connor's arm stayed around Evan's shoulders the whole time, and Evan melted more into Connor every minute.

The show ended, Evan was sure he was the first one to stand up and definitely the one to clap the loudest, even cheering a little. Connor was right beside him, smiling brightly that the other was able to overcome his social anxiety to give a little cheer.

"I forgot to tell you- We can go backstage if you want. My sister's in the pit orchestra."  Evan looked to Connor with his mouth open, so hyped on adrenaline he didn't notice he had pulled Connor into a kiss. It was quick, and quite sloppy as Evan was still in many tears. Neither of them acknowledged it as Connor led Evan hand in hand to meet his sister quickly, and then get signatures from the cast on their playbills. By the time they got out, it was around eleven pm and both of them were rather tired as they approached Connor's door. Connor's phone made a soft ringing noise, and he nodded quickly to Evan before picking up.

"Yup... What? No- Yes? Yes I'll take the role." Connor's face was white as Evan started doing some sort of small jumping dance.

"I got a role. In Newsies. A small role, Morris, but a good enough role for me." He said with his breath short, then feeling himself become enveloped in a tight hug by Evan. Evan's arms wrapped around Connor's neck, feeling their lips connect again. He pulled away quickly, looking at Connor with a goofy grin on his lips.

   "I'm so happy for you!"

"I like you, by the way."

"I-I really like you too." Evan giggled, pulling his body closer to Connor's.

"Would you like to spend the night?" He didn't mean it to sound so intentional to other events, but Evan blushed and nodded his head anyways.

   "I'd love to."
