Chapter 8

TWO DAYS LATER
“We’re going to be late for the wedding, darling. Are you not done already?”
I hear Dan as he shouts from downstairs. I apply lipstick and press my lips against each other before I shout back, “I’ll be down in a jiffy.”
We’re on our way to a friend’s wedding. Kevin and Gilbert gave me a hard time during their bath, which left me with little time for myself. I have to rush my makeup, else I’m sure we’ll miss the wedding. And I’d hate to disappoint Rose after I had told her I’d be in time.
Pulling my hair backward, I put on the earrings hastily. Dan shouts again, and I’m sure he’s going to lose it any moment and leave without me. I glance at myself in the mirror, not studying my reflection. I’ll do that when we settle inside the car. Then I turn swiftly to the bed, grab my purse, and run out of the room.
Dan leads the kids to the porch, and I follow behind them. I lock the door while he helps the kids buckle up. Then I join them in the car. He starts it and veers it onto the street.
